    I considered rebuilding my Chevy 12 bolt. Glad videos like yours are around to dissuade me!
    Nice job.

    We definitely liked the idea of the OX locker! Joe liked the cable actuation and the fact you can actually operate it manually. I didn’t really understand that when he explained it to me. He has never set up gears before and we have a buddy who owns a shop that really knows what he is doing. He has a lot of experience with ARB and after a few discussions ended up installing them front and rear. They have been great so far. We use ours quite a bit for the kinda wheeling we do. But time will tell. Great video Jerry!

    Those case spreaders make me nervous too. When I did my Jeep, I kept turning and turning and turning the spreader and my dial indicator never moved. I thought I was going to destroy my housing because I spread it so far, but the needle didn't budge. I don't know what the deal is. It hasn't blown up yet though.

    Note to the weekend warriors. If you aren't that mechanically inclined avoid doing major differential work. It will be easier and less costly in the long run for you to write the check and let someone else handle the job. I feel your pain Jerry doing this laying on your back without a lift, it's a lot of "in's and out's" without the pleasure.😉

      Oh yeah on a hoist would be a million times easier for sure and cut the time by half if not more.

    Great job Jerry ! I think you nailed it on the head about the shop setting it up completely wrong to begin with . I also am not a fan of case spreaders for just the reason that you said. When that shop set up the gears before they should have basically beat the carrier in not have it fall in . I don't think you will have anymore problems because you set it up correctly . Take care and be safe sir and say hi to my little buddy from me please.

    33:33 I was working at a local 4x4 shop as the social media/front counter guy, I am not a mechanic but I have seen where the copper tube has ended up rubbing on the ring gear and causing a failure, I have also seen the "O" ring fail and both situations caused the shop lots of money as once the pumpkin is pressurized it starts dumping gear oil out the breather vent (Toyota) I would suppose it could potentially push oil out the axle seals too.

      It’s a poor design if I have issues again I’m going to swap it out to a Detroit truetrac

    In my humble opinion, I think that cap being ground on the outside edge will be fine. I would not be afraid to take a grinder to one myself, although it wasn't needed on mine. I did have to grind the shit out of my axle tube for the oil drain slot when I did mine. I really did not want any gear oil blowing out the ass end of my TJ when cruising down the highway. LOL

      Have you been happy with your ARB Air Locker ?

    • @mariodesmo
      @mariodesmo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BackCountryWrenching Yea, I have one in front too. Our trails tend to be pretty brutal here in northern California so I opted to do them both. I've had mine for about 15 years and have not had any problems. When you need to lock up your axles it's like having a magic button. Whenever I've been denied on an obstacle all I've had to do is push magic button and I go right over whatever is in front of me. Most people who complain about them do so because they're not properly installed. All the problems I've seen are the pumpkin installation or the air line routing. The trick is getting them installed correctly, then they are reliable.

    Hi!
    I have a ARB air locker on my rear differential. I haven’t connected the ARB air compressor to the air locker yet. This as led to a leak out of the bulkhead where the air line from the air compressor will connect. I am about to install the air compressor to the air locker and I am wondering if I can just proceed or I have to deal with the leak first. If I do have to deal with the leak, what should I do?
    Thank you

    Did you drill the oil drain holes on the bottom ?

  • @ShnitzlHaus
    @ShnitzlHaus 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    curious did you take a rotational reading when it was assembled with the axles out.
    to see how much the carrier bearings add. curious is all.

    • @BackCountryWrenching
      @BackCountryWrenching  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did but the ARB instructions don’t give you a rotational torque value so I based it off a factory set up, hence why I didn’t include it in the video. The pinion rotational torque is pretty standard no matter what your installing.

    • @ShnitzlHaus
      @ShnitzlHaus 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BackCountryWrenching yes pinion is. I’m just curious how many in/lb of rotation more the carrier adds when on final install. I did one of mine and I’d have to check if I kept notes but 10 -15 in/lb more rings a bell. My pinion was about 30. So total setup 40 45.
      Again just curious. No one writes down a complete rotational torque as you know.
      Also. I had good luck if manufacturer marks the pinion depth. I use a ground parallel to span the bearing caps. Then with a depth micrometer I measure to the pinion head and subtract the parallel thickness to get the pinion measurement it’s been killer for me. Just an idea if you haven’t tried it. You likely have all those tools with your mill ;)

    Definitely not a fun job under a vehicle, with the air locker difficulty too. I just finished a rebuild on my 8.8" and even off the truck on jack stands it took hours of cussing to do. Ironically I uploaded the video today also, nearly identical, just a different truck and axle brand, I feel your pain.

  • @billcarr4094
    @billcarr4094 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great video and I agree. I like ARB's other stuff, but that air locker is WAY too much trouble & modification for what an Ox can do with a cable & fork in the cover. Or for a rear axle, what a Detroit can do by just installing a carrier. Internet opinions of ARB lockers always seemed artificially high. After watching that, I think it's got to be a cult.. of people who never installed one.

    • @BackCountryWrenching
      @BackCountryWrenching  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Personally I would never buy one and install it I’m a fan of Detroit truetracs and Ox lockers
