  • Thought I would record my thoughts on it, hopefully I have the facts straight on how it will work. Missed a few bits so will record some more and call it part 2.

How I see the 'ute tax' workings, think I have this mostly right from what I have read to date. Naturally doing this stuff off the cuff I have missed some stuff so will do a part 2 in the near future, maybe even a part three if I run one on heavy transport.

There is a lot of misinformation out there , let me start with the EV torque thing , the only reason some of these EVs put out a lot of power is two fold , firstly an EV has an absolutely huge power pack to funnel masses of energy to motors , unfortunately electric motors under load use even more energy under load because they can , hence why every single load or towing test against a comparable internal combustion vehicle, the EV has failed miserably.
The other reason some EVs do manage to put a lot of power to the ground is because they have multiple motors.
And I’ll give you an example of a single motor Tesla , my nothing special Toyota Aurion ( like a Camry) v6 family sedan naturally aspirated stock 6 speed auto V6 runs the quarter in the 14 second bracket , the Tesla single motor runs in the 15’s , the only time electric cars have more power is when they add extra motors to them .
And for transparency we have a dual motor long range in the family fleet , of course , even with the bigger battery the range is not even close to my 7 year old Toyota big sedan which also is fitted with a tow bar and a spare wheel/ jack, tools , etc.
On the traveling from Melbourne to Sydney in an EV , you can expect 12 plus hours , and December just past we had family emergency in Melbourne, and that time in the Tesla , the car had been charged over night and was fully charged before the trip home and it still took the 12 plus hours.
It’s an easy 9 hours without even trying in an ICE powered vehicle.
On the cost of vehicles, particularly commercial vehicles governments in Australia have been using them as nice little piggy bank for years, and even more so the big semis , which time after time after time, the pollies love to slug them wherever they can , of course the down side to that is, truckers cannot absorb the cost so they put their prices up , and because of that freight cost for everything you think of goes up ,
Raw material sourcing, raw material transportation, food, clothes, manufacturing, houses , all goods and all services , the cost of living also goes up , but transportation while being one of the basic ingredients for the gears of the economy to go around are also mated with a few other basics , water , gas , electricity , land rates .
You add all these things together that governments of Australia over decades have milked and allowed costs to skyrocket , there is your answer why we currently have people no longer able to afford a roof over their head , people living in tents and cars, business after business going bankrupt, and this is not new , it started in 70’s , but in recent decades it has ramped up.
Why are we in Australia looking at house prices for a nothing special 3 bedroom home often on a small plot exceeding half a million dollars, 30 years ago the same house was around a hundred k.
Re the running to EVs as some magical solution to a very small problem creates way more problems, if you think the cost of Electric cars and utes is pricey , look at the price of a nothing special bus or heavy duty electric truck , I was in the trucking industry and was an owner driver , and I can tell you without reservation, the path these F wits in Canberra are steering us down into Ev nirvana is a farce and and a joke and will cost the country its reliable cost effective diesel fleet to replace it with cost prohibitive EV powered units that make no mistake will not be fit for purpose.
I have a mate with a small bus company being told by his local shire he has to convert to electric buses by date X ….. or else ! The buses cost twice that of a competent diesel bus , and they do not have the range , and when the electric bus company was contacted for its suitably, he was told , point blank it would not do the job of a diesel bus, but welcome to the crazy net zero stupidity at all costs.
The amount of cons and compromises are ridiculous, unfortunately this is the way we are being pushed.
There is more , but I have talked long enough.

it's an odd tax considering newer vehicles are producing less Co2, yet taxing new vehicles will cause older ones to have a longer service life.
the other argument for the tax is weight of the vehicle on the road, curious when a tesla model y weights around 150kg less than a hilux, yet the tesla isnt going to be taxed. this would make more sense if the average road was in a decent condition and not riddles with patch overs and potholes.
Co2 also makes up 0.04% of the entire atmosphere, and most efficiency comparisons are based against late 1980's injected vehicles. which is always the major argument pro EV. its a skewed metric to make arguments about taxing as a push towards an EV option.
lastly rural Australia doesn't suit widespread EV. not to mention the power grid simply cannot support widespread EV use. as a plumber i often travel 400+ km a day to rural areas for jobs, so a diesel dual cab ute is the only real way to do my job. adding a tax to me when i upgrade will only push that cost on down the food-chain. as it will many businesses and sole traders. obviously those using these recreationally will suffer the most.
caveat i am not anti EV as-well, i think they have their place, however the govt shouldn't be pushing in this way.

Couldnt agree more on most. At this stage they are a long way from suiting rural and outback oz. It will all depend on how the company cost is apportioned and what price points change buying habits. The weight thing is interesting. Still have to measure footprints of some chev 2500s but i have some interesting results. Thanks for the comment. Will fill in some gaps in part 2.

@@vagabond_vanner All new cars are too porky. My old Hi Lux is dwarfed by a new Hi Lux yet has the same payload and I don't need a step ladder to get into it.

Any tax is govt market manipulation. Name me a time when govt market manipulation has reduced costs for consumers and improved innovation ? This tax needs to be opposed.

Fuel standard need to be included with the fuel efficiency standards. No point using the existing fuel on “better” cars going forward. Get better fuel. Less sulphur (10ppm) equal or better then European standards.

If Chris Bowen think he is going change the way trades buy there utes the hourly rate is going to go through the roof we just put cost on the customers so Chris when the people find out that that to call out the electrician and its 300 dollars an hour its going to be a blood bath as the next election because it's ute tax that is going cost evey one and Chris Bowen his job

So you approached someone in their driveway to measure their tyre footprint with your beanie with pom pom football supporters hat and uncut hair and you got a response that was friendly and forthcoming, …..that guy is very forgiving .

Nah in my walking gear. Asked him from the footpath what he thought of the chev. Told him what i was doing. He said i could measure his anytime. I see him alot of days. Walk past his house almost every day. He sells cars so happy to chat. Havent measured his in any case. Want a 2500 not a 1500. Not sure my hair would be a problem.

They aren't utes.. They are Tonka Toy trucks. They clog up car parks and destroy the roads. They should pay a higher tax.

Don't waste your time doing, for the 5th time. And don't worry about this tax, that will never get started. Put your time into seeing how these electric fizzers are 10 times more damaging to the environment. Than any I C engine vehicle out there.
A big thing they don't push. Is that every time you fast charge your car, it shortens the expected life of your 30 thous
Dollar battery pack. Give or take 2 or 3 grand.
