One could just add a "add a circuit" fuse into the fuseblock and either repin an existing switch or add a new one to the bar. This way you would not have to jump through the menu hoops to inactivate ABS. Just straight ON/OFF.
Maybe the overheating signal is just showing that the gauge is operational. The same as when you turn your car ignition on and all the warning lights are lit!
Kove could take one thing from the CRF300L/Rally - there's a button on the dash that you hold for 2 seconds to disable the rear ABS. Yes, it would be nice to be able to set a 'power-on' default, but I think it's a legal requirement that it defaults to on, but having a single button press/hold is much better than having to go through the menu.
If i'm not making any mistake, Aprilia on the Tuareg 660 found another solution to go around this legal limitation : You can change the riding mode with a simple button, and the off-road mode has the rear abs off by default. And I think I remember from my test ride that when you turn on the bike, it sticks to the last riding mode, therefore needing nothing to keep the ABS off 24/7. That being said, it only takes a small push on a button to change mode and therefore to deactivate the rear ABS, which I didn't found to be that smart has it could be easily done by mistake, like with big gloves on a slippy road during winter. The exact same setting with a validation for the off road mode would be perfect.
I've only owned two brand new motorcycles in the last 7-8 years, a Honda and a KTM., both 250 4T's. Neither had any issues "out of the box" whatsoever. After a year or so both had some things happen (fyi on the KTM it was a failed ECU made in Japan).
I have triumph trident 660 bought 6 weeks ago. found quite a few bolts that wasn't tighten to spec even with the top steering yoke bolts was only lightly lightly tighten.
That ABS annoyance is on my KTM 390 as well, super annoying, but it's not just Kove. I kinda wonder if it's a safety thing for the road? Not sure about the overheating, I never experienced that and I rode it in 100 plus degrees. As far as all these first year blips go, it's really not too bad. No engines are seizing or major issues. I can recall KTM and Beta having some major issues over the years. No bike is perfect of course, but I think Kove is on to something great and it's only going to get better.
Great comment. Completely agree that all of these issues are minor considering that this bike went from clay to production in the last few years. EVERY first gen complicated mechanical thing has issues.
I have some thoughts of the over heat problem described in the last bit of the video. I don't think that is a bug, the thing is, when you depress the kill switch, it also disconnects the fan power( may be because of laws and regulations?) . So if you ride it pretty hard and come to a sudden stop, I guess they want the fan running until it can make sure the temp is low enough with out it. I would say that flashing over heat dial is a reminder, they could have done it better tho.
If you want to defeat the ABS so it never engages, just mount both sensors on the same ABS ring either front or rear. Both sensors will always be at the same speed and no one will die on a scary down hill because they forgot to turn it off.
What I did on my 2022 G310GS might work: I put a kill switch on my rear ABS sensor. During startup diagnostics, it defaults to ABS on in the front and ABS off in the back. If I'll be doing a lot of time on pavement, I flip the switch to on so I have full front and rear ABS.
Interesting hypothesis; have you tested it? If ABS detects 0 MPH on both sensors, it might think both tires are locked up in a skid and release all brakes until the wheels start rolling again.
@@jerryglasow513 if you reply is directed at my comment, yes I tested it. 500 miles of pure abuse with the fuse taken out. Even removed the front ABS wire and ring.
Well as someone that owns a Kove 450 but in Ontario though. I have had the same issues as you have, minor at best. The other issue I have had but user error was if the vent lines get kinked after refuelling you will get a low fuel indicator. The only complaint I have is the choppy throttle and lack of low end grunt, but I am coming from an enduro background. I was informed that there is an update that should fix the choppy throttle? Question though, Chuck said he removed two evaporators? I only saw one by the skid plate, where is the other one? Thanks
KOVE is building a new 2024 Dakar bike, 450 Ralley EX, which has 11 more ponies(65) 5 more ft lbs torque & is 38lbs lighter. Why? Because they finished Dakar but now really want to win. This hp is where it should be. Apparently, they can be ordered with only a production run of 50 at 2.5 times the price of the current base model
I got a thread on gpx on a well known site. This is at least my 12th "import" I can report back after some mic measurements VS torque values concerning the forks. Keep up the dream..good job. Buy still a slapped together bike like any big 4 bike. But thus is gigh grad bikes and need high grade pdi and maintenance. Good job buddy
FWIW, my Triumph Tiger (and probably various other ADV bikes) has the same annoying reset to ABS on behavior with key off, so I stop it with the kill switch (and then forget that the kill switch is off), or just stall it and then know I'm not going to roll away. The coolant temp thing does seem to be a glitch. I wonder if it happens if you stall it instead of using the kill switch.
I do not believe it to be a software issue. When you are moving the cooling system is operating to keep the coolant at the normal temperature. Now that you have stopped there is nothing to cool the coolant so it increases in temperature for a short while and then begins to cool. This is completely normal.
This ABS reset stuff is a problem of many modern motorcycles. I guess there is some market homologation demanding that the ABS automaticaly switches on.
@@TractioneRag It's so you don't sue the manufacturer if you forget to turn the ABS on, then crash. See also retracting side-stands, permanently lit headlamps etc etc. Don't blame the manufacturers, blame idiots owners and the legal profession.

Well on my 2017 Africa Twin, you had to also every single time switch off the ABS. Honda has many years of experience and decided to roll out that way. Then they fixed it on newer bikes but never on the 2017. That was annoying too. It is not only Kove.
Just physically disable the ABS (you can unplug what ever modulates the breaking) fixed. Then you can turn the key off and when it resets just ignore it. Problem solved with everything else then, right? No need to wait for a software fix either 👍
Nice vid. The issue of resetting ABS persists in all Kove motorcycles. I think they need to be forced to get a programmer to fix the issue. Just some registers to hold the last settings. I've been on some sketchy areas where I almost killed myself because I forgot to turn off ABS after turning the motorcycle switch on again
Every manufacturer does that because there are laws forcing them to do so. Fortnine's vid made a great point---forgetting to turn *OFF* ABS when off-road is way more dangerous than forgetting turn *ON* ABS when on-road.
This is helpful to Kove. They are a new company and some adjustments with the help of the motorcycle community, for sure they will listen. Its a start.
Agree. We are not pointing fingers at Kove but do want potential first time consumers to see what we experienced. Turns out the fuel overflow IS an issue others have had on unmodified bikes, but we didn't know that when producing the vid.
The oilleak should be fixable for any future bikes, if this is a widespread problem. If your fuel leak is, would have been nice do declare, if you deleted the canister or not. The problem with the ABS is sadly widespread everywhere. Don't know, why they can't have an option in the software, where you can setup up how the ABS should start. Maybe with a little reminder every start and a few menus where you declare, that the manufacturer is not liable for any accidents with this setting in that way. With the temperature it is not a software bug, the display is showing exactly what the sensor is reading. When I stop the engine on an Tenere700, because I want to roll down a hill, as long as the engine is not circulating the coolant, the temperature will rise because of the heat in the engine. Nothing to worry about anything there. But nice video :)
Hi Dallas, Chuck and Aquaman, is there an update planned to this episode (incl canandian backyard dog fighting)? I am really interested how your three Kove's are doing. Thx in advance Clemens
These have been surprisingly good and reliable now with longer experience. You have to remember the price category! You won't get any other 450 rally at this money. In the EU, these come throttled to 41hp. You have to change the ecu + exhaust pipe + and airbox to get the full 54hp KTM's quality, on the other hand, has decreased since they moved production to India
Just watched a video where a Kove owner is already having fuel guage sender problems. Koves own US website states that the rally is a "closed competition motorcycle only and cannot be legaly ridden on public off road areas(California). Also this is imported as a dirt bike and absolutely will not be able to be licensed for the street in most states. So much for being a Dual Sport. "Just, just a software bug"!
Hello, I've been watching a lot of videos, images and I went to see it live at EICMA. I'm still not convinced. I have a Crf300l and love it, but I needed a little more engine power. TFT also seems to me to be in the wrong place, where do I put my Garmim XT?
Video molto interessante!
You can add ON/OFF switch after the ABS fuse. So you can switch the ABS ON/OFF while riding and it stayes like it is.😮 I made that to my CRF300 Rally and it works. I can switch it also back ON without stopping.
Oh no....not a leaking oil banjo. 😋 The leaking fuel issue was down to you?? ABS - same as lots of bikes...work-arounds will turn up. Software...that'll probably evolve with time. Crack on in my view. I haven't heard the word 'terminal'. All good info though 👌
The ABS reset is courtesy of the legal department. They don't want someone crashing because they forgot to turn ABS on when they got back on the street.
Not a bug. Sounds like the kIll switch might kill the waterpump together with the engine (as it shoud). When the kill switch is not activated, the waterpump drives circulation even without the engine running as long as ignition is keyed on. I am guessing.... ( Addition: As Patrik correctly mentiones below most waterpumps in todays stock bikes are gear driven and therefore will most likely not be disconnected from the engine. The fan will be but not the waterpump.) Thanks for the reminder Patrik.
Water pump is usually powered by the engine itself via timing chain. It doesn't have its own motor. When the engine is not spinning, neither is the pump.
What you call a software 'glitch' or 'bug' for the temp gauge is a very logical and simple effect. I'll give you a hint: the dash read the sensor correctly. There is no glitch, no bug.
Actually, the T7 does the same thing if you turn it off with the key OR with the kill switch, the ABS defaults back to ON, so most riders just stall the bike so that the ABS stays off, cheers, great review👍👍🍻🍻
Pretty minor teething problems. The abs thing is present in the KTM's but there is a dongle to solve it. Hopefully they address that one but I suspect its a legal issue to get the bike into North America. "overheating" message when killswitch is pressed it's not a glitch. It's just a sign that you have killswitch pressed... Do you remember older suzuki bikes? When you pressed killswitch you had "check" "error" on the dashboard - that not an error nor glitch. Its just a design they wanted it. Same for Kove. Peace!
Always best to let someone else be the "early adopter" and find out that sum ting wong. Too many variable to judge quality over the short run. Metal quality, engineering, tolerances that might be bad won't be apparent right away. Look at some 50-year-old Hondas that still run well. The test of time tells the story.
Honda make the XL 600 again but it's not sold in many countries which is odd. One of their best bikes being remade but not being sold to the people who need and want it.
So it is a new model, and has teething issues. What was not said is, is it really better than the competition, to even bother with. Seems people are liking it, and see the problems as a natural, easy fix, progression.

Is the temp problems related to the fact the coil is powered up while ignition is on maybe heat warning due to coil being hot burning out i was told never to leave ignition on due to burning out the coil ??? Just a stab in the dark tbh but never know 😊
I've been a professional auto master tech for 30 years and can tell you no manufacturer monitors coil temp. Fact is as mentioned in other posts that ALL engines spike coolant temp when turned off. Completely normal. More likely is Kove has set the overheat warning at too low a temp and or not buffered the warning to flashing when it shouldn't.

@@mxbadboy263 You might not be the target customer, but I'm sure Kove will get a few new owners that expect no niggles. They will consume 90% of customer service's time.
@@mxbadboy263It is a paradox for Kove really. If they are successful, I would think it would simple enough for Honda or KTM to make a version (at higher cost) and many people would pay the extra for an established brand. If they sell in the hundreds not thousands, they remain a niche brand that many assume are cheap junk. I don't think the Kove is junk (Jimmy Lewis, former Cycle World editor and Dakar rider has extensively tested the bike and praised it...mostly). I also think it was clearly built to a price. Not for someone who doesn't like tinkering with their machine, and takes it to a dealer to have the blinker fluid changed.
Three bikes give you a sample size of three. That increases your statistical confidence and/or reduces the time for adequate testing. Alternatively, you can think of the total hours ridden as your sample size. Either way, you're after the mean time between failures (for your fleet or for each bike). From your description, you haven't had any Kove caused failures, you had two short-comings that should have been found and corrected during dealer prep, dealer test ride, and/or user preventive maintenance, checks, and services (aka PMCS). If you consider these rides to be the dealer test rides and your PMCS, then re-start the clock now.
"haven't had any Kove caused failures" I'd say a banjo bolt not being torqued properly is a Kove caused failure. It's a bit that your paying thousand for not a kit, you shouldn't have to go around and check every single bolt with a torque wrench. Lucky it was on a cooler line and not a brake line.
@@elobiretv Actually, in the video, they say they should have done that and didn't, so I'm accepting their assessment rather than imposing mine. That said, you use a piece of equipment to go into the wilderness, the onus is on you because you're the one who gets stranded, injured, or dead. How much you do or don't do is a risk assessment choice you make when you decide what to check and what not to check.

I have voiced my opinion about these china-land made bikes and their inherent Unreliability. Buyer BEWARE. These may be simple issues but I think after a year of riding, not only will the bike start suffering from major mechanical issues, but also experience a HUGE drop in resale value. Mark my words.
Idk, the engine in this bike is made in the same factory that builds many different engines for many European motorcycles, including BMW and KTM. The specific engine in this bike is known to be reliable. I, personally, would be more concerned with the knock-off KYB suspension (I would wager my left testical that the suspension design was stolen/reverse engineered KYB. China doesn't innovate technology, it steals it from greedy corporations that move their manufacturing there)
Ah...us old Brits said exactly the same thing about Japanese motorcycles...and we were right...until we weren't. The Kove is better quality and time will show it. I've only ridden 5,000km on mine and it is very robust.
I set a note in my calendar for December 1st 2024. I’ll let you know after 5k miles, several races, and lots of crashes. I got $250 it’ll be running just fine. You game?
It will be interesting. I'm just not sure what you'll be comparing to. If it's a KTM 500, with expensive upgrades, severe imbalance due to large desert tank (carried high), I would bet you'll see a similar depreciation. So if it proves to be reliable and keeps doing what it is doing for those seeking this type of bike, you may see both brands/bikes dropping $3-4k in value. So yes, the Kove would drop a higher percentage. But the cost to own may be similar, with a bike that handles better out of the box (literally), at an entry point that is 2/3 the KTM that really wasn't built for this use. Go into ADV bikes--way more weight, less offroad capability. Rally Replica...yeah, that will lose the depreciation argument. Just as these guys are looking at the great range offered, this bike fills a specific gap not found elsewhere.
What makes me laugh here the issues Otherthan the dash temp were caused by the technician 😂 and if this bike was a suzuki, honda , yamaha this video wouldn't be taking place , all because its Chinese, and we must find faults.
This review seems a bit harsh. Every bike I know of resets the ABS and other settings when the key is turned off. It's annoying but understandable, you have to make everything idiot proof these days. I actually don't mind this. Let's say I was off road last weekend and had the ABS and traction control off. This weekend I take off on a street ride and some muppet pulls out in front of me. If I have forgotten to turn the ABS back on I will probably become a hood ornament. What if the pavement is wet and I have forgotten that the traction control is off, I hit the throttle in a corner a little too hard expecting the bike to compensate and the rear passes the front of the bike? I would rather be annoyed at resetting it after turning the key off. As far as the "oil leak" one should go over all of the fasteners on a new bike before they jump on and take off. I am sure this happens with all manufacturers. It is usually caught when the dealership assembles them and checks everything. The heat sensor is only telling you what is actually happening, it isn't a glich at all. Turn the engine off and stop circulating the coolant and the temp goes up for a while. Turn it off with the key and it will still happen, you just won't know about it. If a couple of fluid leaks is all that went wrong on a brand new model of bike then KOVE did an outstanding job! I mean look at all of problems the KTM 790 had at first. I mean, one must spend about 2 grand on a CRF450RL to make it ridable out of the box. We have been buying KLR's, DR's and XR's for decades with know problems much worse than a fuel leak that we must fix. In my book, if this is the worst of the problems then they did a fantastic job! I am going to look into buying one! I am going to look at the low seat version. What a brilliant idea! Do you know if anyone has done a ride review on that model?
Haters will hate, exaggerate and amplify problems x10 times. People used to make fun of Japanese cars in the 70s and 80s. Nowadays, Japanese cars are on the best top selling list. Everyone wants to buy one.
It's weird that they use "open and close" in the menu, then if you take it as an electrical circuit, it's backward. (Opening a circuit is to turn it off, and when you close a circuit you give it power)

Great comment. Completely agree that all of these issues are minor considering that this bike went from clay to production in the last few years. EVERY first gen complicated mechanical thing has issues.
It's a legal requirement for ABS to default on in much of the world
Set up your short cut switches to turn off ABS and MTC; easy peasy takes 5 seconds to turn them off.
I pulled the fuse the first hour I owned it. Then I removed the front ABS wire and ring. No one needs abs on this bike
If the rest of the bike still works, then perfect! Cant do that on the KTM 790. @@Trailfocused

This Dakar thing proves nothing. Let's see the bikes they ran in the race up close.
Yes, seems to be a lawyer piece for the potential of street legality
@@TractioneRag It's so you don't sue the manufacturer if you forget to turn the ABS on, then crash. See also retracting side-stands, permanently lit headlamps etc etc.

After months off and a lot of soul searching I finally got my head together and grew a bigger set of cohones. I'm ready to get back in action. This video inspired me even further, Thx
@@quattrobajeena8954 yeah but should be an option when supplying
That's what we've learned sofar, it's a requirement for them to be considered legal for the street. Ryan @FortNine is a good guy.👍🏍
ROFL the dog fights! My bet's on white!
This is helpful to Kove. They are a new company and some adjustments with the help of the motorcycle community, for sure they will listen. Its a start.
Thank you. We did our best to be honest and fair. None of the things we mention are show stoppers.
It’s a bit unfair when you are listing the fuel leaks as a fault when both were down to your messing with the bike.
Tks. We were given a fix for the ABS

Yup same issues with.the heat sensor. Everything else has been fine apart from a coolant leak from the top hose, which just needed tightening up
Cool to hear your experience has been similar to ours!
cool, the question is, does it gets loose again from vibrations or was it just not torqued enough from factory
These have been surprisingly good and reliable now with longer experience. You have to remember the price category! You won't get any other 450 rally at this money.
In the EU, these come throttled to 41hp. You have to change the ecu + exhaust pipe + and airbox to get the full 54hp
KTM's quality, on the other hand, has decreased since they moved production to India
Awesome vid! Great info!
Video molto interessante!
I just removed the fuse for the ABS and solved the problem. When riding on Dirt Roads all day no big deal.
Beauty tip.
You can add ON/OFF switch after the ABS fuse.
So you can switch the ABS ON/OFF while riding and it stayes like it is.😮
I made that to my CRF300 Rally and it works.
😅 As usual it's an issue with the nut that connects the seat to the handlebars.
Kove 3Dog tuners add ABS button and pocket tank.
You are absolutely right @@patrik9666
What you call a software 'glitch' or 'bug' for the temp gauge is a very logical and simple effect. I'll give you a hint: the dash read the sensor correctly. There is no glitch, no bug.
Actually, the T7 does the same thing if you turn it off with the key OR with the kill switch, the ABS defaults back to ON, so most riders just stall the bike so that the ABS stays off, cheers, great review👍👍🍻🍻

Always best to let someone else be the "early adopter" and find out that sum ting wong. Too many variable to judge quality over the short run.
@@larsihle9256 fair point i did say it was a stab in the dark an I understand what you mean no water pump no water circulation therefore cause heat spot nice diagnosis Dr

@@sburns2421 The customer base imo will be small for this bike. Most riders understand that Chinese dirt bikes are built cheap.
Thank God someone is here that is smart.
@chuckfromtruetech

You game?
Your spot on. These fanatical cool-aid drinkers just can't "Handle the truth"!
