  • A Black civil servant was handed a six-figure settlement by the government over allegations of racial discrimination in Whitehall, The Independent can reveal.
Kay Badu, 36, said that he was subjected to relentless bullying at the hands of white managers over the course of three years in the Cabinet Office that left him with symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.
“I am a survivor of the Cabinet Office; if you’re black or Asian, that’s what you do. You don’t go to work to thrive - you survive.”

Too many racists with old school mindsets. A foreigner once used the N word in the office and still works in the civil service shows you how highly they think of non-white people. especially Black ones.

I don’t know why racist people love to come in the comments and say that someone is a whiner when they have never experienced racial abuse. You people love to invalidate someone’s experiences or trauma, but when it comes to anything that isn’t racial you’re all open arms. It’s extremely telling

@@IBTU If you really believe everyone in this country has the same opportunity then you are clearly living under a rock. What makes them racist is their response and invalidation of black peoples experiences in regards to racism. The fact that you could even be so uneducated to think that everyone in this country has the same opportunities is just unbelievable. You cannot judge or speak about one’s experiences when you have never been through it. It is wrong and just silly.

So sorry no one believes these grifters any more, I suspect the Civil service bent over backwards to accommodate this person who was hired beyond his capability in all likelihood.

Yes, speak your truth!!!!! I am going to try and be brave like this this young man and speak on mine.
I have worked in many public sectors (civil servant in justice departments, local councils and NHS) in my 15 years of administrative roles. There is a distinct hiring pattern, people of colour tend to carry the burden and the burnout of the department/organisation, then riddle you with discplinaries over the meagrest incidences or over other employee mistakes. They also tend to only favour people of colour when it comes to added hours along with pay cuts. When this doesn't work they block promotion or a move to elsewhere, as they have coercively controlled your HR employee record. It's shame as your employment always starts off well, until your probation period is over.
You come in desperately hopeful that you won't find yourself in the same situation and then slowly and gradually, you begin questioning your worth and sanity to the point where you're too sick to work, and that's when constructive dismissal kicks in! Being a black woman, and now with a 5 year disability, adding to that beautiful mix of the discriminative intersectionality of race, gender and disability. This is how you maintain such oppression.
I've lost so much faith in the UK's institutional employment systems, tbh hearing my parents experiences of yes, similar work traumas, this shouldn't be a surprise. Yet it still devastating hurts to a point where you are numbed. I've been diagnosed with PTSD from standing up for myself or doing my job too confidentiality. As a result, I now show no personality, I no longer authentically smile unless I am outside of the office and still I have to careful when it comes to work social events.
Being from the milennial generation, I now see a similar dynamic, updated by the pandemic, in that hybrid employers are being selective on who has to now physically be in office, any guess which race pools they would pick on?! Sigh, I'm hoping the oppressive employers will see their oversight (I won't hold my breath!), understand our true rebellion to getting back in office is regarding lack of work/life balance, and rebuilding self-worth from home. This will pave the way for progressive employers, who don't always give in to their biases or insecurities but just want the results that will maintain there businesses.
