  • 🐝 Spring management of a honeybee hive. Giving them space in the brood box to minimise swarming.
🐝 One of the most important jobs in the beekeeper's year is to put good spring management practices in place.
🐝 Climatic conditions vary greatly in Australia and around the world.
🐝 On the mid-north coast of New South Wales, bees can start to swarm around the start of August.
🐝 This video goes through the process of making space in the brood box to give the queen room to lay and for the colony to expand.
🐝 Mt. Coramba Apiculture offers beekeeping courses & workshops for beginners.

Thanks Glenn. Really appreciate your knowledge and local experience. My bees were stroppy today too! I still can’t face taking my gloves off though as I’m not keen for the stings 😉

Thanks Glenn. I'm on the Coffs Coast and I was going to leave it for a few more weeks to lift some brood. I might do it this weekend instead. Keep the videos coming. Cheers.

Look in the broodbox & make an assessment. Every hive is different but my good ones are a week away from swarming.

Thank you for your video, just moved some frames up today
Just curious if you move a frame up above the Queen excluder and it has drone brood when the drones hatch can they get through the excluder or do you need a top exit ?

Thanks for commenting. If you are on the ball, you should check your bees every 10 days in spring. The drones will fly out when you open the hive.

Thanks Glenn, a clear and precise video , I’m lifting brood frames this inspection, it’s my first time solo doing inspections so I’m a bit nervous.

Hey Glenn, love ya work mate. How do you manage your drawn comb outside of the hive during winter to stop them for getting eaten by wax moth.

    • @mt.corambaapiculture

With some difficulty. The best practice would be to place them in a shipping container & freeze them however the cost is prohibitive. Last winter I put them on pallets & shrink-wrapped them then treated the combs with phosphene a couple of times. In hindsight, our winter was short & warm so I could have easily left them on the hives. I may do a combination of both methods this winter. Good subject for a video.

Gday Glenn. Do you take queen excluders off over winter?

    • @mt.corambaapiculture

Sometimes. It is not essential though I just make sure that I put frames of honey down into the brood box when the queen reduces the number of frames she lays in.
