      you can get yourself an Otari MX5050 two track rather cheap these days. I have one. Buuuut, I wouldn't recommend it. They were made to be ultra clean sounding. Which they very much are and if you are looking for dirt, i'd look for something like a Tascam 80-8, but only record 4 tracks on it, 1/2 8 track isn't that great. Do 4 tracks on the 1/2 inch, sounds much better. Don't get the Teac 80-8 though, they always had sync problems and these days, they're just not worth it.

      Cheapo version: Set up 57s in place of all the mics he's using. Then run it through whatever 4-channel+ audio interface you have. Use the waves plugin bundle or whatever you have to simulate all the gear he's using, and voila.

    Just do the Tame Impala set up. 57 or 421 on the snare top, another 57 on the side, condensor mic as an over head, mic the kick with whatever you like. Kev uses another 57 but do you. and optionally mic the floor tom. Then get yourself the Tube Tech CL1B plugin and compress the shit out of everything.

    Experimenting-that is where things get fun- all electronic music is a magic trick , we can kid ourselves that we can get a "realistic" sound, but who says we even hear things the same? So may as well have some fun lending unique character to different instruments. I guess a problem one can run into is if the sounds need accessing again- how to reproduce them? I imagine you take notes when you uses unconventional techniques. But I am ADD to a ridiculous extent and have to take notes everywhere or I wake up every day like a newborn baby. Haha. You obviously know what you're doing, have killer gear and sense of humor. Thanks for sharing!

    I'd be inclined to mike the kit normally and just slam the crap out of that room mic - it seemed to be doing most of the heavy lifting - and then add it to taste to the rest of the mix. That would add some crispiness.

      @bigkickleo 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are 2 "heads" on an analog multitrack machine: Record Head, and Repro(duction) Head - Monitoring from the Record Head may have some latency and will only allow you to hear what has been printed on tape (like the output signal back from the recording medium/ disk/ drive whatever) - the Repro head will let you hear the input signal before it gets recorded. Zero latency and you actually hear what your feeding the machine.

    this is a little similar to how Adam Pierce of Mice Parade records his drums. From here: www.xlr8r.com/features/2007/07/mice-parade-in-the-studio/
    "Almost every time I record drums, I throw up a distortion mic. You throw up some room mics and you throw up one mic that you intentionally distort through compressors and gain and shit. It's just a matter of how much [that mic] gets used. There are some tracks where it's barely in the mix at all, and there's some, like ["Tales of Las Negras"] where the sound is a bit more prominent. Cool sounds and obviously cool gear but I was doin this as a kid in the 90s with 2 shitty radio shack mics with the cords built in running into a old cassette deck in record/pause with the levels on 10. Split the line out L-overhead/R-bass drum to my 8track reel to reel and it was as good as this or honestly better. No fancy pre or compression of any kind needed only post eq to your liking. Also crushed is not the proper term. Since that term gets used for "bit crushing" . This should be called overdriven/blown out/distorted/ragged/red lined/mangled etc.
