Last weekend, The Deck witnessed a spirited performance by the Khmer Blind Band, a group known for their expertise in Golden Era music. The band's lead, Mr. Chea Horn, had shared his inspiring journey in an interview, assisted by interpreter Un Samphors. Horn had begun his musical career in the mid-90s in Battambang, inspired by old Cambodian rock'n'roll performers. Despite his musical talent, his blindness posed a hurdle in securing gigs, leading him to form a band with other disabled musicians.
In 1999, he sought governmental assistance, resulting in regular weekend concerts at a park next to Wat Botum, which were held until 2004. The band, a group of 16, faced challenges, including low income and unpredictable weather. Nevertheless, a sponsorship from Angkor Beer in 2002 offered some relief. After five years, the concerts were cancelled, and the band had to disperse.
Their luck took a turn for the better in 2021 when they started performing at Boran House and subsequently at The Deck. They usually performed as a five-piece band but could expand for special occasions. Horn expressed his desire to pass on his musical knowledge to the younger generation, enthused by their love for the band's music. After their recent performance at The Deck, the Khmer Blind Band remains ready to perform at weddings, parties, and other events, promising lively and memorable performances.
