Basically this point TwoSet has so much bad karma with the viola gods that Brett & Eddie would have to would have to reenact a viola version of A Christmas Carol with Kim Kashkashian and the ghosts of Lionel Tertis & William Primrose ... with a soundtrack by Bella Bartok... to get them off the hook for this meme they have been on for the past few years.
As a percussionist, I have experience playing both the triangle and tambourine and let me just say that the tambourine is harder to keep quiet during rests than actually playing the notes, making it hard to play the rhythm accurately. Getting a clear tone on the triangle is harder than you think, especially if it's only played once as a solo. The triangle is essentially one metal bar bent into a triangle with the ends leaving a gap at one of the corners. If you hit the triangle on the 'wrong' side (same side as the open corner), it produces a wavering pitch as the sound waves travel different lengths to the gap of the bar. To make to triangle sound clean and pure, you have to hit it on the opposite side to the gap in the bar, therefore the sound waves travel an equal distance to the opening. Also, dynamics are hard to master on the triangle, as one tiny touch will still produce ample sound Just trying to educate non-percussionists :)
I did use to think, like a lot of people, that triangle was only "ding ding"... then heard a freakin' amazing triangle solo in a Marcus Miller live and it definitly changed my mind on the subject. I'm not surprised it can be that difficult to play well. :D Thank you for the explanations !
I was told at a very young age by my music teacher that the triangle is one of the most difficult instruments to play. I never underestimated the skill of a percussionist who played the triangle. I would argue its scarier to play the triangle than performing as a solo violinist
Seconded, #pianogang. Ya like jazz? We got it! The classics? Got them too! Modern instrumental? Don’t even need to ask! Pop? Sure but let’s move on from that.
I'm a harpist (and a cellist) and carrying my harp up the stairs... At least my cello case has straps! (and to all those violinists, cellos aren't heavy just bulky)
These two dudes can play violin, but they are so fucking ignorants outside their world. It's like they are living in 1800. I thought they were funny, but they are just dumb
Like seriously though, when are these 3 going to collab? It's obvious there is some fanbase overlap, so why don't they try and see where it gets them? Perhaps compose something together? Davie could do the rhythm stuff and then they could play violin on top of that and it would probably work if they put their heads together to craft something proper.
I'm not a musician but I am desperately waiting for a non joke viola video. I listened to a couple recordings recently, can't remember which ones unfortunately, and wow, double stops on a viola are absolutely devastating. Cascades of chills! Love it!
Hahah I have had to lug a harp around on a dolly lol MUCH RESPECT cello is definitely heavy, but it is crazy hard to gingerly pull a harp up a staircase on a dolly.
I've played many instruments, it seems fair. Heres some of my thoughts: Oboe (i'm learning): good spot, hard to master and play but has very nice tone Piano (played / play): uhh sure, it's well know and great way to learn music theory Clarinet (played / play): kinda fair, the tone of a clarinet is very nice, in fact I personally like it better than the silvery flute sound Xylophone (played): actualy played vibraphone and marimba but xylo could be higher but prety fair where placed Now to the ones I experience everyday but haven't played: Trumpets: good, but can you stop playing fortisissimo Trombone: could be higher, has some cool stuff and the slide is very unique and can make gliss like strings Saxes: sure. maaaaaaybe E tier Tuba: cmon it's like the bass, need it or else it feels empty. Very much needed in chamber music Flutes: too many ppl try to play it
As a representative of the sax community we are upset by your rating of this instrument we hope u consider us more as we are often leads and the band and the rest of the band can not function very well without us. Thank you.
TwoSet: Violin can do things piano can't. Me: can you play 8 note chords? And we can do gliss, pizz, and tremolo. Can you play bass cleff? No offense though I play violin to! You guys are the best!
Ah, as a clarinet and oboe player, I was happy and sad. I LOVE clarinet, I prefer it simply for its repertoire, but I love the oboes sound more, dependent on the level of playing. Clarinet players are separated primarily by musicality and skill level, but there is a lot more depth when it comes to oboe.
Violinists: Ugh my arm hurtssssss... The instrument is goddamn WOOD, why is it so heavy! Cellists: Are you kidding me? I think the bones in my back are all broken. Double Bassist: ... hahaha... that's... funny. Pianist: ... wait you guys can *move* your instruments??? (it's not our fault our instrument is impossible to move,,,, ;-;)
You can move a piano, if it has weals or if you get like five people to carry it. Double bass rips your arm and shoulder out it you try to carry it to far, like across campus. You will be sore for weeks. The pane of being a bassist. And yes we can project 😥
I have to carry a cello and bass because my friend would get literally smashed under it. Also when you were 11 and had to do that it was basically impossible. It's gotten easier tho
Yes! I was about to comment on that. Also, you have so many awesome jazz clarinet solos every where: take the one from Sting's "Englishman in New York", for example, which is just perfect!
Anat Cohen also... there's also more repertoire than oboe outside classical music, choro uses clarinet a lot. Trombone should also be rated higher because of this, it has nice range, solid repertoire, amazing projection.
The bassoon is a beautiful instrument bro as a bassoonist I feel we never get opportunities to play good pieces we just get the dead base parts when we can easily play the tune
I disagree. Good French horn sounds better than everything. Bad French horn is still miles better than bad violin, oboe, or trumpet. So if French horn's a C, then the violin and pretty much all the woodwinds are D-tier at best.

Also, dynamics are hard to master on the triangle, as one tiny touch will still produce ample sound
Just trying to educate non-percussionists :)
Well said.
I did use to think, like a lot of people, that triangle was only "ding ding"... then heard a freakin' amazing triangle solo in a Marcus Miller live and it definitly changed my mind on the subject. I'm not surprised it can be that difficult to play well. :D Thank you for the explanations !
everything fun and games until you drop the triangle and deafen everyone.
I was told at a very young age by my music teacher that the triangle is one of the most difficult instruments to play. I never underestimated the skill of a percussionist who played the triangle. I would argue its scarier to play the triangle than performing as a solo violinist

Hahah I have had to lug a harp around on a dolly lol MUCH RESPECT cello is definitely heavy, but it is crazy hard to gingerly pull a harp up a staircase on a dolly.
I've played many instruments, it seems fair. Heres some of my thoughts:
Oboe (i'm learning): good spot, hard to master and play but has very nice tone
Piano (played / play): uhh sure, it's well know and great way to learn music theory
Clarinet (played / play): kinda fair, the tone of a clarinet is very nice, in fact I personally like it better than the silvery flute sound
Xylophone (played): actualy played vibraphone and marimba but xylo could be higher but prety fair where placed
Now to the ones I experience everyday but haven't played:
Trumpets: good, but can you stop playing fortisissimo
Trombone: could be higher, has some cool stuff and the slide is very unique and can make gliss like strings
Saxes: sure. maaaaaaybe E tier
Tuba: cmon it's like the bass, need it or else it feels empty. Very much needed in chamber music
Flutes: too many ppl try to play it

SAME!!!!! I saw the title and i was like...”if they say anything...”
I can just about shift my upright a little bit. It's about 250kg
Violins aren’t heavy, you can literally carry it without the use of your arms and just using your chin and your shoulder
Organist: "....."
I have to carry a cello and bass because my friend would get literally smashed under it. Also when you were 11 and had to do that it was basically impossible. It's gotten easier tho
Eddy: "You don't really have jazz clarinet."
Benny Goodman: ○_○

Yes! I was about to comment on that. Also, you have so many awesome jazz clarinet solos every where: take the one from Sting's "Englishman in New York", for example, which is just perfect!
Omg, yeah, like one of the most famous jazz players of all time.
Benny Goodman! Yes! And he commissioned amazing pieces from (now I forget because I’m so agitated- LingLing Insurance) Shostakovich
Everyone: aww my instrument wasn’t placed well
Bass clarinet: sad forgotten noise
Same for marimba...
Bass clarinet gets absolutely slept on. Same with Saxophones. Most composers don't know how to properly write for them.
Most people don't even know that bass flute exists so I end up playing an alto or concert flute for most stuff because there's nothing written for me.

Literally an brass instrument(other than trumpet) or woodwind instrument would agree with this statement
Trumpet and French Horn go hand in hand! They're like brothers (probably because my brother is a trumpet player)
I disagree. Good French horn sounds better than everything. Bad French horn is still miles better than bad violin, oboe, or trumpet. So if French horn's a C, then the violin and pretty much all the woodwinds are D-tier at best.
