Syd Mead was way ahead of his time, his illustrations were and still are phenomenal

He went beyond. Even now, most concept art isn't as wild as his ideas. A true creative person.

I have that US Steel book. Love the paper used for the illustrations.

Syd Mead is a perfect merge of Erte and Heavy Metal magazine.

I think his last work in film was some concept design for “Elysium” specifically the space station interior design.

Ooh great stuff, thanks for that. Reminds me of those cool books my Dad bought me as a kid.

I do find it a neat factoid that he got to design the Turn-A Gundam and various mecha in the series of the same name.

His futurism looks way better than what actually came to pass. The current aesthetics suck, and I have little optimism for the future.

There’s plenty of beauty in the world and our architecture. You just have to look.

I blame Steve Jobs and Apple for a lot of that. The whole Everything is an iPhone look is SO incredibly sterile and bland that it just sucks the soul and wonder out of even the most amazing things. Everything is about simplistic form to suit function now and although that isn't a bad thing it certainly doesn't leave a lot of room for wonder and enchantment.

We have a bit of a Futurism problem currently and have for some time now. Outside of Matrix-cyber-dystopia, we don't really have a guiding optimistic vision. I'll admit when I clicked on the video, I thought this was going to be a current-day view of the future, not Syd Mead from decades ago 😕

The word is pronounced: Ji-ron (the i is long as in eye) It is derived from Gyroscope
