    Fun fact: my friend Sharon actually helped me with the very first video I edited. This was in 2009 when I was living in Portland, Oregon and I came across an online travel contest in which the winners would be flown to Australia to help promote tourism in the country by filming their travels in a van for several weeks, all of it paid for. This was years before Sharon moved to Australia. She also lived in Portland and had imovie on her computer, so I used that to edit the video. It's nothing impressive, very simple which is one of the reasons I didn't win, I'm sure. But you have to start somewhere. You can check it out here: th-cam.com/video/ogJ2xLiRNW4/w-d-xo.html

      @@FarAwayInWA Yeah I sorta screwed up, people had told me to head up there but I booked three nights in Cairns and it's quite the tourist scene but with no beach. @@GabrielTravelerVideos You also can't swim in the ocean up there this time of year because of the Irukandji jellyfish. Although if you travel out to the reef you can swim there. Best place for the beach this time of year is South-East Queensland and then heading south into NSW. I'd suggest making your way down here after Cairns, but then it looks like the weather might turn rainy here in SE QLD as well next week.

    There used to be a stupid competition between the cities, but I reckon we’re so different and unique by now that it’s no longer relevant and we can celebrate both equally… and least that’s the feeling I get amongst Sydneysiders nowadays. I’m certain it’s now much the same amongst Melbournians too these days.

    Great video! Sharon got it mostly right about the Yarra River. When the Europeans asked what the name of the river was, they were actually standing beside a small waterfall. It was the waterfall that was called Yarra Yarra, which meant "always flowing". The aboriginal people called the river Birrarung which means "river of mist". The park between Federation Square and the MCG is called Birrarung Marr which translates to "beside the river of mists".

    As a Sydneysider I would say that Melbourne is absolutely the coolest city in Australia. Still, having grown up in the southern suburbs of Sydney, I would prefer to live in Sydney because of the beaches, waterways and National Parks. Love to visit though. Melbourne is known for having “four seasons in one day” so it’s great to see you have finally found some sunny weather, though ironic it’s in Melbourne after a rainy Sydney. More often than not it’s he other way around. Wow St Kilda food prices are up there with Sydney prices. Don’t remember that being the case the last time I was there which I just realised was 9 years ago! Time to visit again.

Melbourne was not much of a town until Gold was discovered in the 1800’s but at the peak of the Gold Rush, Melbourne was the richest town on Earth so a lot of good architecture combined with the wide grid street layout and historical preservation being key, the blend of old with new blends IMHO. I hope you were able to experience some good weather for the remainder of the Melbourne leg of your trip.

      @@DejanKeepingitReal Sydney gets more rainfall than Melbourne and yet everybody loves Sydney’s weather, funny that? I don’t like crappy weather, crappy weather to me is always stinking hot and humid like Perth and QLD, I like a winter and spring and our summers get very hot, 48 is rare but 40 is not. Melbourne has cooler temperatures but it’s actually sunny a lot so I wouldn’t call that crappy weather, Sydney has more rainy days than Melbourne and Brisbane has more rainy days than Sydney so I don’t get this “Melbourne has crappy weather” thing 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @DejanKeepingitReal
      @DejanKeepingitReal ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ashdog236 it’s true the past 3 years Sydney has had above average rainfall but for years before that we’ve had barely any rain. I can tell you from experience as iv3 lived in Perth, that is definitely not humid, their summers are very much like Adelaide and Melbourne- a dry heat. And the winters are very mild with almost no rainfall. Brisbane on the other hand can be very humid but then it’s climate is sub tropical, it’s a garden paradise in Brisbane. Each to their own, although Melbourne has arguably the best art gallery in Aus, and the fantastic Yarra and casino, it’s not my cup of tea mate.

    The first thing I look at is the trees when I'm in a city. People do have their favorite trees and for me they definitely are not the plane trees. These trees are throughout Europe as well as in the United States. I see now these trees are in Australia. These trees are also known as sycamore trees. These sycamore trees here in California have a pungent stinky smell that is contained in their huge wide leaves and when they fall the leaves are everywhere. However, these trees do provide shade. I have heard that the plane tree is drought resistant that is why they get planted. I would like to see tulip poplars everywhere. 🌳

    All the Sydney siders in the comments going on about how Sydney’s weather is usually sunnier than Melbourne is just false, Sydney factually and scientifically gets far more rainfall than Melbourne and every time I’ve visited family in Sydney it’s been absolutely pissing down throughout the visits, Sydney siders need to calm down and embrace the fact they live in a rainy city 😅

    This is so cool! Almost exactly 10 years ago, I visited Melbourne to watch the Australian Formula One Grand Prix. I stayed with a great friend in St Kilda! She lived in the building above the KFC you mentioned and her partner at the time was a chef at a restaurant in Fed Square! I loved the city and area and this brought back some great memories.
    A connection with Sydney is that you mentioned an amusement park near the base of the Harbour Bridge opposite the Opera House in one of your Sdney videos - that is also a Luna Park.
