Renault Kadjar (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

  • Renault KADJAR is the French carmaker's attempt to repeat the success of Nissan Qashqai. Kadjar takes its name from two joining syllables KAD and JAR. The first is supposed to sound like a quad bike, and the the other like agile or jaillir, which is French for gush out. Renault claims KADJAR sounds exotic and adventurous. This test example costs around 30 thousand euro, which is about same as an equivalent Nissan Qashqai or KIA Sportage. This Kadjar has a 1.2 litre petrol engine producing 130 hp. It’s got just about everything except for leather upholstery and AWD. AWD is available only with a diesel engine.

    I love your reviews. However I tested a Kadjar just yesterday and didn't notice any of the faults in your vehicle. Maybe they did give you a "not quite ready" car to test but I may take a second look. On the positive side I think the car looks stunning and I loved the layout inside. Also, I drove the 1.5l diesel version which seemed pretty smooth and responsive. Keep the reviews coming - they are brilliant!

    Great review as always and In all fairness to them, I stepped into a production Kadjar at a local Renault dealership and tested the build quality of the central console as you just did. No squeaks or creaks.

      +Tarik El-Yabani I've just seen another Polish review with a different press Kadjar. It had the same problems with sat nav, and the interior made the same horrible sounds. It seems Renault has put out a shitty batch at the start.

      +Marek Drives How unfortunate! Are they all coming from the same factory? The ones sold in Gibraltar are coming from the Spanish one, so it could be that. Since we're a small city, I'll ask the fella who bought the Kadjar I tested if he's having any issues.

    • @MarekDrives

      Tarik El-Yabani European Kadjars are made in Spain. Renault will also make them in China for the Chinese market, but I guess I drove the Spanish one.
      And please ask around. I'd love to find out more from people, who actually bought them.

    I kinda like Renault design, and i owned on back in days. It had one faliure(water pump). Repaired after warranty expired at official service centre, for little money. Everything else was ok. No problems of any kind. I'got me a CO2 i mean VW and this was one problem after another. I have an Astra now (pretty aged) it still runs. Well i'm watching this channel to prevent me from buying a money pit trap or a totaly unispiring box on wheels. Thanks Marek. :)

    Nice interesting video Marek. My 'ex' recently got a Kadjar on the Mobility scheme, as we are still good friends, I am still the main named driver. She wanted a bigger car for the dog (in pic). After driving it for nearly 3 weeks now, I think it is a fantastic car!! Quietest car I've ever had. It is pretty quick off the mark considering it is a 1.6 diesel and getting an average of 70+mpg too. Previous car was a crap Nissan Juke, or Joke!! Crap windscreen demisters, would be better of blowing it, windscreen froze on the inside in winter (North Midlands, UK), so hardly cold really. And crap boot space. This one is huge, no upset dog anymore as he has plenty of room. Everything is really comfortable. Anyone who is considering getting a Kadjar, go for it, you will love it. Oh one thing I noticed on the dash, when you are driving and accelerating, a tiny gear stick icon flashes to urge you to change your gears hahahaha. You can also change the colour of the speedo dial to 5-6 different colours. Green is nice and so is the electric blue.

    Just say you don't like French cars and that's it. This is not a proper review.

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +g00dfeeling Seriously? "you don't like French cars"? Are we on school playground here?
      I owned a French car for 12 years, and I was quite pleased with it. If you'd listen and try to understand what I said in the review, you'd know I don't condemn Renault or French car manufacturers. I see a lot of good in this car, but quality needs to improve. I expect ALL car manufacturers to offer cars that are solid.

    • @g00dfeeling
      @g00dfeeling 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Marek Drives During everyday drive you will never hear squeaks you found, but only if you really want to produce them by intention. For the money, this car is very solid and it is among the best in the class. I agree there is space for improvement but that is not worth mentioning 10 times during the review.

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +g00dfeeling I drive 60-70 cars every year, and very few leave such an impression, as the Kadjar. In this test car I couldn't even rest my knee on the footwell wall without it making a sound. I hope cars in the showrooms are better put together, but this one made all sorts of noises. I feel it is my duty to point it out, so that potential buyers pay attention to it. I am currently test driving the face-lifted Mazda6, and nothing makes noises, even if I press or pull hard. In this Kadjar it was enough to press the centre console with my finger, and it started squeaking.
      BTW, I wanted to review the new Renault Espace, but it died on me. Electronics went all mad, the car wouldn't start, and had to be towed. This is two consecutive test Renaults with problems. Plus I've seen other squeaky Kadjar reviews. So I am allowed a suspicion that Renault is not up to scratch in the quality department.

    • @g00dfeeling
      @g00dfeeling 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Marek Drives In my company there are around 200 cars and almost half of them are Renault made. In general, no issues with reliability at all. Megane I drove didn't have any squeaks and I doubt Kadjar or Espace are below that quality standard. I think you should be sure if car you test is pre-production or production model as in this case viewer doesn't have full information.
      I don't expect Renault will be assembled like VW or Mazda but that is probably trade-off as it is definitely much prettier and more modern.

    I see a lot of positive reviews of the more expensive and worse looking Duster and I wonder why. We drove the Kadjar in extended test drives a couple of times and it does not justify the price difference over the duster. It also has the dynamics of a brick so it is no fun at all. Not that we are anti Renault either. We have been enjoying our Captur during 40K Ks of chores and trans European exploration over the last two years - our motto thanks to Marek: "Captur loves kerbs". The Captur has great dynamics and is fun and practical on shorter or longer journeys. Having moved to the country we are switching to the new Koleos which seems to have manged to inherit the good dynamics of the Captur in a more luxurious and powerful package. In 4WD configuration we can cruise in comfort the inclines and snow here in Switzerland with ease.

    Tested this Kadjar yesterday, 130ag petrol mechanical gearbox. Quality was amazing for the price, door plastics are made with some gum to eliminate squeaky noises, no squeaks driving over bumps, wind noise was very minimal at 120, no whistling. Engine is punchy and really great for city 0-50. I cancelled my KIA order and I'm going to buy this Kadjar, just with automatic box, which is coming to my country in this summer. I have tested a lot of cars for this price, Kadjar was the best of all, very comfortable and practical car, very comfortable seats, just loved it. Very good transmission noise isolation, Renault finally made a very decent car for this segment, what you get for the price is just phenomenal. In this review you have driven really shitty build, I did not detect same problems in recent model

    Hi Marek,
    I think you may be a moody reviewer. I think you were in a bad mood when reviewing the Kadjar, and in an exceptionally good move when reviewing the Nissan Qasqhai. In a different review you said the Qasqhai's 1.2 petrol motor was excellent and was performing very well, and then you said the Kadjar's 1.2 petrol engine was slow and not well suited for this car.
    But since the two models' weight and dimensions are very similar and since the Nissan engine has lower performance for ALL stats compared to the 1.2 Renault engine (less HP, less torque, more time needed to reach 100 km/h) I would say that your slandering of the Kadjar's 1.2 petrol was unfair.

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Will get back to you on that, when I check something, but AFAIK these are not exactly the same engines. I've driven a Pulsar with HR12DDT and it was amazing. Kadjar felt gutless, even though it looks better on paper.

    • @catalincostea1548
      @catalincostea1548 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't mean to be unpolite, by the way, so I hope you will take my previous comment just as it was intended, which was an attempt of mine to try to understand why the two similar engines mounted on the two similar cars gave you such different impressions.
      I agree that things on paper can be different than the real life experience. But still.. I find it hard to wrap my head around this. Can there really be a big difference? The Renault engine with much better performance on paper would be that bad compared to the Nissan in real life? I'm not saying it's not true, but if it is, it's weird.
      About the 1.2 petrol on the Pulsar, I believe you when you say it was a much better experience, but on the other hand I don't think you can compare it to the Kadjar/Qashqai situation because obviously a 1.2 turbo petrol is going to behave much better on a small hatchback like the Pulsar (which is also more than 100 kg lighter) than on a bigger car like a crossover.

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Catalin Costea No offence taken. I watched both reviews (the Qashqai review is old and terrible), and I know I said the engine in the Qashqai was fine, and the engine in the Kadjar was sluggish. I will need some time to get technical information out from both brands, because I feel there's more to this, than just the engine (perhaps gearing?).
      Generally Kadjar has a lot going for it, but Renault's execution of things leaves a bit to be desired. As I said in the review, this was supposed to be a "pre-production" model. What was it doing on the local press fleet eludes me. Unfortunately, it was not the last test Renault with faults (you'll either love or hate the Espace story in two weeks). If I was somehow biased about the engine, it's the least of the brand's problems.
