If you did it that way, then it wouldn't be 8ft between columns. You need to take into account the width of the column. Thus, it would need to be copy 8ft plus width of column...

What is the modifier key?
Look at the status bar in SketchUp when you are in any command. It will list the modifier keys for that command on your operating system.
