Here's my personal testimony as it pertains to cold plunges. I live in a tent on the beach here in Melbourne Florida and for a while I have been missing being in the water because it was so rough. Just recently the ocean has been calm and I've been wanting to get in. I have been feeling a lot of sadness and anger but I didn't know that cold plunges could relieve these feelings. Well I finally took a dip and it was COLD 🥶. I stay in for maybe a minute or two then got out and stood there then got in again and stayed a little longer. I did this three times and the fourth time I stayed in for about 15 min. I got out and felt so good. I was sleepy though😂😂😂. But I feel great from doing that and I'm going to try and do this everyday

It's more than just a shower. Once i started walking to work during the winter on North East US, I stopped getting sick and haven't been in 8 years

Fascinating and informative but one thing was not addressed. I had heard, from reputable medical sources, that the stress of a sudden plunge in cold water *can* cause a fatal arrythmia or a heart attack as the heart has to work harder. Since you always consider the older population, I would be helpful to understand ways to ensure safety while enduring a bit more of a cold challenge, but safely.

It's to do with 1) sympathetic drive - quick safety checks would be something like - would you go on a rollercoaster? 2) the opposite effects of the sympathetic shock response and the parasympathetic dive reflex which gets activated when your face is in the water. So I'd advise to go up to the neck at first, not plunge whole body

Currently, I think I'll consider the Canadian winter to be enough cold exposure for me. But I'll stay tuned to the discussions on this. Speaking of Canada, did you lose the 'hockey hair' or is it just tucked under the cap? :-)

Simon, do you do cold water therapy? if so what is your routine? (cold showers, etc?)

Turn heat down to 19c? In the winter, I would have to crank the heat up to 19C. I keep my house at around 12 at night and turn it up to 16 during the day in winter. Anything more than that would be really expensive here in Canada!

I try for 2-3 hours weekly walking in the Winter. I didn't realize that would activate the BAT. Interesting.

I wonder what are the long term effects of deliberate cold exposure on our blood pressure and CVD risk. During the exposure, our BP skyrockets. There are also some studies on the effect cold weather on BP and CVD risk and it's well known that lower temperatures are associated with higher BP.

Can you get the same overall benefits from taking cold showers as you do with cold immersion?
For those with atrial fibrillation but not on a regular basis, is there any danger in taking cold immersions or or cold showers?

Out of curiosity I wonder what the benefits of cold water immersion along with a carnivore diet would be? I currently do both but haven't had any tests done. I do feel fantastic though.

No New Year's resolutions for me as I've always been one to walk to a different beat. I'm of Scottish descent but I must have some other forces that have me earthing, hot sauna bathing, and yes, cold plunging. I'm 59 and never have I felt younger. My neuropathy in my feet is nothing but a memory. I have energy to spare after doing my plunges and my evening plunges have me sleeping like a newborn babe. I walk barefoot everywhere I can now. Yes, people stare. No, I do not care. Everyone thinks I've lost my mind but I could care not one little bit. I'm off two meds and hope to eliminate all of them in the next few months. Listen to your body- it will lead you the right way! My weight has always been an issue but I'm no longer scaling out and the weight is falling off of me slowly but surely. Putting a plug in the jug and eliminating alcohol from my life has been one of the best gifts I've ever given myself. Now I can fully enjoy everyone in my life and actually be fully present for my grandchildren and adult kids. None of these things is a big secret to anyone- but actually implementing and using them in my lifestyle daily has been life-changing!

@2:34:19 maybe it’s just a sense of completion? Like you didn’t do the cold plunge 100% if your whole body was not submerged. 🤷🏼‍♂️ lol

      True.
      That psychological completion

First cold experience this morning. When do you see your balls again after cold immersion?

Do you have to submerge hands and feet? That’s so brutal for me.

Peoples with high amount of subcutaneous fat can stay very much longer in the cold water. The Item with brown fat is highly overrated.
