    Maybe BYD should have you on retainer if not to do live testing but to train their testers on how to test and what to look for. They seem to be locked into some methodology that blinds them to how to engineer for the real world. Thanks for this one Bjorn. All the best.

    Hello Bjørn. I mentioned Thailand as an example because I also live in the tropics of Taiwan. I see this BYD Atto has a quirky heat pump. It cools the battery as it cools the cabin. It probably should be updated over the air to start cooling the battery at 35 degrees during charging. Yeah.... I just checked you have the same opinion. I am writing as I watch your video.
    Bjørn, I would suggest you make another 1000km next year with this BYD. By that time it may have some over-the-air upgrades.

    15:51 I would not repeat the 1k challenge. It took you a lot of time to identify the problem (thanks for this great work and all the effort). And I don't think anyone would do that unless there is as much expertise as you have. And after all, the 1k challenge should be a realistic representation of the car's specs and performance. And these problems are unfortunately the daily business when driving an Atto 3.

On highway journeys I've not encountered battery overheating/throttling but our fastest chargers are 75kW, with the majority being 50kW. I did experience the disconnection issue with two BP chargers in a row in Christchurch - at different locations. Both being failed handshakes.

    This shows why Tesla's octovalve makes it much more efficient. It gives vehicles with a single heat pump the ability to heat the cabin and cool the battery (and vice Versa ) at the same time without having to sacrifice one or the other. As most vehicles do not have a comparable system to the octavalve, the results that you see in the test make sense?

    Thank you Bjørn! I have the same problem with my Han here in Oslo. This explains why it's charging better in 30 degrees in Germany in the summer than in the winter when I,m using heater instead of cooling in cabin. Eureka! It's because it does not cool the battery good enough in th winter. My Han is stopping charging every time I,m charging after 300 km. on German autobahns. If the battery is cooled down before charging it does not happened.

    • @MichaelEricMenk
      @MichaelEricMenk 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      It's because the heat pump is being used in heating mode.
      When it is damp and chilly outside, you want to use a heat pump to cool down the air, and then heat it again. This dries the air, so it does not condense on cold surfaces.
      I have the AC on all year round except in summer. This is so the air dries the interior. My AC compressor automatically turns off at 3°C, so no worries about water freezing on the evaporator.

    Those LED lamps are literally blocking half the airflow to the radiators. If you open the hood and look down, you will see an air duct that runs from where those lamps have been put. That's a really bad decision by the owner to put them there.
    By restricting the airflow to the cooling system your invalidating all your tests.

    It's basically missing an octovalve, where it could pull heat out of the battery and put it in the cabin, or out of the motor and into the battery etc.
    That and a decent software for running it appropriately.
    But in your charging test you did show that despite this, it charged better than the Mégane up to high SOC despite that having higher headline rate of charge.

    • @shanestanley3369
      @shanestanley3369 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Lewis_Standing It does have hardware that does much, if not most, of what the octovalve does. That's what that block of valves and the heat-exchanger under them do. The software is the issue here.

    At 4:35 you mention cars that rapid gate while cabin cooling and charging. The Tesla do the same in 45 degrees. The 2022 MY LR we have needs 5 kW cooling when charging, and in 45 degrees Celsius is cabin cooling, requiring close to 5 kW. The total cooling system can only provide close to 7 kW, so charging is slowed down a lot to maintain battery temperature when SoC is lower than 60%. Again, this is at extreme temperatures, but in Phoenix, AZ is this potentially for 3 months of the year during the daytime.

    This is a bizarre cooling loop design. In an ICE, the cooling system dumps engine heat into the cab, then the radiator if excess. An EV should do the same for excess motor/battery heat.
    IE. Heating the cab should USE battery/motor heat, effectively cooling the battery/motors. Not heat the battery too.
    It's a more complicated cooling/HVAC loop with the bi-directional nature of heat pumps. Since they can both cool AND heat, both the battery and the cab. Lots of variables to build in to the cooling loop design.

  • @Gazer75
    @Gazer75 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    This whole system is kind of silly designed. When heating the cabin the other side of the heatpump would be cold and could be used for cooling the battery.
