  • A Sansui BA-5000 stereo amplifier repair and restoration video. This BA-5000 vintage stereo amplifier is one of the most highly regarded products ever produced by Sansui. This was a top to bottom repair and restoration that after 40+ years of service this vintage amplifier needed. This Sansui CA-5000 was in terrible cosmetic shape when I obtained and it needed the old electrolytic capacitors, troublesome diodes and transistors replaced. This is the only Sansui audio product that ever used output transformers. 300 watts into 2, 4, or 8 ohm speakers.

    I remember seeing these amps when they were brand new. They were a little above my price range at the time, but I bought and still have a TU-717, AU-717 and AU-919 that still work to this day. I'm sure they could use a recap and I will do that myself at some point, but these old Sansui's were bullet proof. I've really enjoyed your video. That's a lot of work, but well worth it : )

      @@vintageaudioaddict I forgot to say I really enjoyed every part of your repair video. That amp is a real beast. I never knew Sansui even produced monsters like that. My brother also has old Sansui gear he brought back from his military time in S.E. Asia.....I believe his is an AU-777a amp and tuner? I did my first pot replacement the other day on a control unit for RV jacks and it came out great....and I saved myself about $450 for a replacement. Keep them coming VAA.

    This is a serious amplifier made when good sound was truly the aim. We are lucky to see one still being used. Your restoration is very sympathetic to the original design and I greatly appreciate it. Have had to fix some older gear occasionally but usually some butcher has tried to fudge it but failed, making full repairs not financial, have occasionally kept the casework and replaced the power amp with all new to increase reliability.

    Greetings,
    I've just subscribed. I saw the word _Sansui_ and all of a sudden, this brought me back to a time in the mid-eighties when I had just left home and moved into my own flat. I had a Sansui amp - though not this particular one - mated to a Regar Planar 3 turntable and Mission loudspeakers. Later, an Aiwa cassette deck was added.
    Congratulations on your _man-cave_ as we call it over here in the UK. Cloistered away from _her-in-doors_ most of the time is the best way to preserve a marriage.

    Great to see the heavy weights kept alive, I only have the BA-3000, hasn't had speakers connected(a load) in years however powers up in the right sequence, throw power switch, LED goes red to green and VU meters simultaneous do there half mark twitch. 160 per channel was plenty in an apartment back in the day. You've sparked my desire for the old audiophile in me. Give me a few days I'll play some Donald Fagen. I'm warming it up right now, One unique characteristics of the BA-3000 was it's round transformer. I've had the amp since 81-82. Thank you for sharing your passion.

    Thx for the treat - I just get some coffee and start my night. OK - it´s definitely time for my Christmas gift. BA-5000 and CA-2000, please! Here is a great youtube Christmas wonder story: a fan(K) of the Vintage Audio Addict channel watches carefully as his most wanted favorite HIFI-gear getting thoughtfully fixed by a "godly gifted youtube channel running engineer" who originally got the dream couple from his precious wife who loves her husband more than the air she is breathing. And here is the miracle: somehow, about Christmas time the two beauties (BA-5000 and CA-2000) made their way over the Atlantic right into southern Bavaria. Oh, what a wonderful world we live in. Cheers.

      @@vintageaudioaddict It is a great pleasure watching you "fixing" equipment - I come from the other end - the abuser side I have to admit... and somehow I can´t really regret it - we had so much fun with the amps, pre-amps and drove them to their limits. The equipment of these times in our eyes was just nearly undestroyable... (but it wasn´t of course)

To my ears, the best sounding amp and possibly most reliable and well built, with the exception of the speaker terminals is the Yamaha MX-1000. I had two of these (bought new). Recently sold them for more that what I paid (not factoring for inflation).

    • @vintageaudioaddict

      Thanks for watching! Well on any faceplate you have to be careful. If it's a aluminum faceplate start with warm water and a little dish soap. Rags, paper towels, old toothbrush all work well. See how it goes. Beyond that I've used Mother's mag polish successfully but if you try that make sure you test a small area first. I've never had an issue but that doesn't mean you won't. Any of the old fisher, scott, mcintosh etc. glass faceplates I wouldn't get anything wet around them. NO water, windex etc. I've seen too many ruined faceplates to take a chance. Plastic like the meter housings water, windex etc. works for me.

      @@vintageaudioaddict thank you. What about cleaning the interior, including the mess on the output transitors, or the boards and their components? Do you start with a vacuuming or a brush, do you use liquids, and how long before everything is dry? Do you use soap and water there? I saw you use some brush on deposit. Why would you need to deoxidize the underside of a board? The solder oxidizing shouldn't affect the current flow there or does it?

    I've had a black McIntosh MC-2500 powering my fullrange Acoustats. It is rated at two times 500 Watts at 2, 4 & 8 Ohms but was rather helpless with the load presented by my Acoustats. A Mark Levinson ML-3 without autoformers and "only" specified for two times 200 Watts @ 8 Ohms powered my Acoustats beautifully and without a problem. I do not think the Sansui BA-5000 would fair any better with my Acoustats as the Mac or any other tough load.
    Like the video though and the effort you put in your work and the opportunity to hare it with us and great that you salvaged it!

    Hello, first of all I wanted to congratulate you on that restoration, because taking advantage of your experience, I request your support, I just bought a BA5000, in very poor condition, it was stored for many years without use and all its power transistors were removed from the rear panel, except for the dirt and rust in theory, it is still functional because the only thing it lacks are the transistors, so your support in this sense, would be if you could provide me with an image of the rear panel where the values of the transistors are, their location and its position since I observe in internet photos that the direction of the text changes and that means that its position differs, now I could also observe that for example if it takes a row and hence 5 transistors the third, that is the third, its value it changes and that detail I could see tango in the upper and lower fil, so it would be very helpful to have the image or, if possible, the list with the values, to That the technician can put them properly and not make any position or value errors and that damages something, or if there is any way of contact, by mail or messenger to send you detailed photos of the team and thus be able to explain to the technician correctly, it is worth mentioning that the service manual already has it printed, but do not locate what I was asking you. Thank you in advance for your attention and support. Best regards.

    Nice restoration work, cheers! I own a BA-5000 with matching CA-3000 preamp, they are awesome. Just wondering: Is it normal for the BA-5000 to run very-warm after its on and playing music at moderate volume for a while? Mine does get rather warm when I put my hand on the cover. The cooling fan is designed to come on at 158 degrees F if I recall correctly according to the spec in the service manual. I dont think the fan has come on when Ive played the amp, but it would be helpful to know if its ok to get a bit hot even if the bias measurements are all within spec, considering all the power-out transistors it has. Did you notice any difference in temperature when comparing the before & after of your restoration? Would applying fresh thermal compound to the transistors make a significant difference in lowering the heat dissipation?

    I have one of these the face panel needs painted. Any Ideas. It was heavily scratched as a road amp and also I need handles for the front. Had the same common emitter transistor problem as you and corrected it the same way. Repaired this about 7 years ago and it is my main amp for my front speakers. I use a Technics Se9600 for my rear speakers. A Sansui AU-11000 for my deck speakers.

Right channel intermittent and needs new lamps. Never been serviced except for a cleaning in the late 80s. I'm original owner. Bought it in the Philippines in the late 70s along with a pair of SP. That way you can just put your G-9000 in the car and take her to the shop yourself. The G-9000 is a wonderful receiver. Good luck with her! That's a big heatsink but given there's 20 transistors bolted to it there's not much heatsink per transistor. Does it run hot?

    • @jukingeo
      @jukingeo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it probably does. I have many a Sansui receiver and always liked the way they sounded. They have amazing power supplies as Sansui made their own including the transformers. However, as you see yourself, they are known for not having large heat sinks and I have found that they do burn their transistors out easily if you are not careful with the load. Sansui's pretty much are 8 ohms only. This amplifier might be an exception since it has the transformer, but mismatching the load is what probably burned the outputs out. Still, when it came to the older vintage stereos, I just liked the sound of the Sansui's the best. Pioneer was a close second and then Technics. Marantz is also a good sounding receiver, but I don't like the way they look so I never bothered with them. The largest Sansui I worked on due to blown outputs was the G-22000. And yes, after I fixed it, it did run very warm to hot running into an 8 ohm load at about 75% of it's rated power. Nevertheless it was LOUD! But just a warning to you if you go with Sansui...if you push them, they push back by blowing the outputs. Almost all should be gone through, cleaned and biased properly to specs. The 75% rule is pretty good to follow as well. So if you listen to music and you find 75 watts a channel loud enough, go for a 100wpc receiver (or more). Just be careful if you go too high on the power as you can damage your speakers from overpowering. This is naturally easier to see if you get a receiver with power meters and I highly recommend that. This amplifier above would be too big for my tastes, but I just looked on as it is a nice looking piece.

    these BA-5000s are quite rare, not a single one has come up for sale on ebay in at least the last 6 months to a year and only a handful of Japanese models come up for sale on yahoo Japan. This thing was a BEAST back in the day weighing 108 pounds. You think the G-33000 pushes speakers well? The BA-5000 is a step above the G-33000 in output performance and I'd get a BA-5000 with a CA-3000 and a TU-9900 tuner any day over the insanely overpriced G-33000 and pocket several grand in the process.

I have changed all Capacitors, with ELNA, Sound is really much better, But I have checked With Technician, But they did not found , why Humm sound come in one speaker. As you have experience, whats your idea about that?

    • @vintageaudioaddict
      @vintageaudioaddict  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The first question is did you have the hum before the re-cap that was done? That is the first step. If the hum was there before the re-cap then you could have a grounding issuing being caused by corrosion on a grounding point on the chassis. Of coarse, this is just a guess. If the hum is new after the re-cap then you must go back through and re-check the restoration work to find the issue.

    *I've had the Sansui G-7700 Tuner Amp for 20 plus years and has served me well; however, It's been in the shop three times for either the left or right channel which don't last very long and now, both are out I suppose. There might be other issues that are causing it, but It is my understanding that Sansui no longer has left or right channel outputs for Tuner Amp, and so It's been sitting on a shelf for many years, sad but true. I'm not sure it's worth fixing even though it's been a great system and is still very clean?* *It may take a wizard to fix, like yourself!*

      getting genuine parts is a key factor as well as a tech that cares about his/her work. Parts from china are iffy at best. There's so much counterfeit stuff hitting the markets, or old parts being stripped from equipment and sold as new. There's a reason a US distributor like Digikey might charge 10 times more. It's the real part and it not only meets original specifications, but it can be traced to the manufacturer. Parts need to be matched and verified on a curve tracer, if you have something worth repairing. You should not be having channel consistently going out because the same parts need to be replaced.

    The diode replacement on the meter board puzzles me. You stated the originals were known to be problematic. OK, why replace with 2 in series? Not for piv, 4007's are 1kv. Not to match Vf, originals look to be single diodes. No mention of sil or germanium type. Paralleled anode to cathode across the meter makes a good protection circuit, but yours are in series. Sil in series with a zenier for Temp compensation I have seen also, but this is not that. So I am puzzled. I accept that you did the right thing, I just want to know why. I have owned Japanese iron before. I have an AU999 awaiting it's turn for repair, and a Pioneer SX-5590 working great. My taste ran to Onkyo, until I discovered vintage McIntosh. The problem with high end audio is, most people have never heard it!
