  • This video shows the repair and restoration of both a McIntosh MX110 Vacuum Tube Preamplifier/Tuner and a Dynaco ST-70 Vacuum Tube Amplifier. This all vacuum tube McIntosh MX-110 is a wonderful sounding Preamp/Tuner. All of the coupling capacitors were replaced as well as the electrolytic capacitors. The Dynaco ST-70 is also a really good sounding vacuum tube power amplifier. When I purchased the ST-70 it was non-functioning. After restoring both the MX-110 and the ST-70 they truly make beautiful music together.

Nice job, nice video! That Mac looks incredible. I just bought my first vintage integrated amp, a Pioneer SX-450 and I absolutely love it.

I had an MX110 back in the day. I loved it. It needed some tubes and I removed it from my system. My wife found it and sold it at a yard sale. I never asked what she got for it. Broke my heart.

My father bought the Dinakit version of the ST-70 sometime around 1960. (You seem to be missing the outer case) He had very little money at the time so had to get the kit. A couple of years later he replaced his older Fisher tuner with the Dinakit version along with a Dinakit preamp. He built his own speaker cabinet following Electrovoice's "Empire" cabinet plans (Rear loaded folded corner horn) with an Elecrovoice 15-TRX speaker. He had to wait about 3 years before he could afford to buy a second speaker. Then later he added Electrovoice's external tweeter and mid-range horns. That was a sweet system. We had a ham radio operator who lived in a house about 1000 feet away. At one point he did something to his transmitter which caused our amplifier to pick up his signal. The audio was so clear it sounded like the ham guy was right in the room with us. To begin with he was telling us we had something that wasn't right. Nice guy and tried to help but... Took about a month before he figured out he had done something wrong and fixed his transmitter.

Mx110 is a classic. I had an older version but sadly sold it. I missed it so much I bought a MR 78. Still the MX110 had a beautiful sound especially in FM stereo. Mac made some great tuners.
My friend had a dynaco stereo 70, nice mids but light in the bass. In my experience most el34 based tube amps are. Nonetheless for the money it cant be beat.

Put that dynaco st-70 paired with some good Klipsch horns unbelievable Bass. Never underestimate the efficiency of the bass reflex or folded horn.

One of the stupidest things I ever did was drop the Dynaco and preamp at the thrift store. At the time I thought SS was the way to go and tubes were the past. I rue the day.

    • @vintageaudioaddict

I think it sounds good for a 1960's preamp.

    • @GIBKEL

@@vintageaudioaddict -I have a Vincent SV 226MKII which is a powerful hybrid integrated with no phonostage. Has 3x12AX7’s which gives some tube color in preamp but I’m always curious about going all in someday with a tube preamp /separate where I’m able to eq with a bit more sensitivity as records are all over the map depending on the trends of the day when they were made. Can’t listen to digital….cds occasionally but I’ve never tried a DAC. Autoimmune disease has made my ears so sensitive although hearing is great. I still like to push the volume but can’t stand the 1 dimensional wall of digital sound stridency. Loses the image and subtleties. Not sure where to start down a path like this? Appreciate your work and showcase. Would you use a separate more modern tube phonostage over the internal? I have one of those on order but it will be another year. Music/sound is my happy safe place and it’s been that way since I can remember as the early 70’s was a turbulent time for me and music was my good feeling endorphin rush.

I like the st-70 but i prefer HHSCOTT fully integrated amplifiers
It’s very hard to find the correct preamp for a regular power amplifier some are good for some amps some don’t help the amp but work better on others

The MX110's performance holds up very well going by modern criteria, the ST-70 not so much.

Wonderful amp, love mine. It tended to blow fuses though so I replaced the rectifier with a solid state Weber Copper Cap. Works great as you can see in this video: th-cam.com/video/cLIOW28RxXo/w-d-xo.html I also use it with a McIntosh preamp.
