Bought mine 30 years ago for $75 bucks. Still one of the best stereo pieces I've heard. Currently using a Pioneer 1010 receiver but bound to hook the Sansui back up soon.
3 cups of coffee was all it took. I really truly appreciate the time you take to put these together. I'm starting down the repair side of this hobby after collecting for 15 years. I wanted to let you know that you gave me the confidence to do this. I recapped and replaced all the known problematic transistors on my Sony Ta-2000f. It's working amazing but, there's an issue in the muting circuit I'll tackle one of these days. For now, I just shut the amp down first. Really truly sincerely, thank you!
I am glad someone is giving Sansui the credit it deserves. In terms of Japanese hifi only Luxman and Accuphase actually built equipment that beat Sansui. But Sansui was a lot more affordable.
Chris, I have to give you *HUGE* props not just for the Legendary AU 9900, but making the step to installing ChatGPT on your system. I literally just signed up for it earlier today. I could only dream of this amplifier. A friend of mine had 4 Cerwin Vega AT-100's all powered by his Sansui AU-9900! It's a tank!
Thanks so much for watching, CJ. She truly was built to last. As you know I enjoy the old electronic stuff but I also try to stay up with the times. The artificial intelligence stuff is pretty cool.
You make great videos. Not even sure how I stumbled on to vintage audio videos but your videos got me wanting to go look at thrift stores and garage sales and break out some electronics tools. Thank you.
I have an AU 4900 (38 wpc) that I listen to more than anything else in my vintage collection -- and I rarely have to turn it up more than a quarter of the way to make the windows rattle. (I listen mostly to acoustic jazz and stuff recorded in the '50s-'70s, so I don't need or want to listen at more than 60-70 dBs.) I play Roon through a Cambridge Audio DAC hooked up to the AUX input. It's like a time machine -- the way I always felt "hi-fi" was supposed to sound.
I want to thank you for the videos. Your production keeps getting better and better. Your videos aren't just educational, they are becoming entertainment. I have a BS degree in Elec Eng but wrote software my whole career. Getting back into electronics again and I have recapped two receivers. I wish it was easier to find affordable equipment to restore. Maybe I need to reevaluate how much I need to spend on units that need work.
Your welcome. Thank you for the kind words. The production/video editing has become a hobby in itself for me. Putting the video's together take longer then the repair/restorations. Like everything in life.....Practice practice practice. Ya, the prices have got pretty high over the past few years. You really have to search for deals. I always enjoyed "screwing around" with writing software. I just wasn't all that good with it.
Definitely my favorite style and look when it comes to the vintage amps,i was limited with funds and couldn't afford anything to high end so i settled on the black face sanyo DCA 401 rack mount style.not exactly a high end amp but it serves my needs perfectly and the sound is pretty decent.🇭🇲👍
I'm just glad someone (you) finally mentioned that new, stupid Deoxit straw 😂 The most annoying part about that straw for me is how it keeps dripping after I spray anything with it
Hmmm... you have me thinking about the Sansui AU-X1 and T1 DC (Direct-coupled) pair I bought in 1978 in Misawa, Japan. The last time I tried to power it up, the start-up relay would not work. I loved the fact I could run a Moving Coil Phono cartridge and had a freq response of 5-50K. It also had no tone controls as it was designed to run an Equalizer as well. Am thinkin would love to have that brought back up. I do remember getting the service manual with everything I purchased at that time.

perfect timing I have just started looking for an AU-9900, this one may cause me to sell everything and just have 1 system. Hopefully it won't come to that. It just looks like a wonderful piece of equipment to work on.
Loved the video intro Chris! Great job as usual on the rest of video as well. When you talked about including AI (Chat GPT) I was like Wow! That’s so cool! As I have gotten older, now I have noticed peoples perception of me has changed. They seem to think because I’ve gotten older that I’m close minded to new ideas. It is my belief that no matter what your age is you’re never too old to use innovative, new technologies, and ideas to solve problems and create new things.
When I had a Sansui receiver (the G Series from the late 1970s) I liked it on phono until I upgraded to Carver. I relegated it to a secondary room and to my surprise, it's bright and brittle highs actually sounded better than the Carver on dullish cassettes. Synergy I guess.
Hello, after testing the bias current the right channel is OK (50mA) but on the left channel I can't set it to the correct value and it's between -15mA to -7mA. What can cos this problem except bad power transistor? Is it can be just a bad capacitors?
Hi, I bought my AU-9900a from a smoker. Volume output was really low so I thoroughly cleaned every single connection point the unit had inside. The volume level and all inputs have seem to be restored to normal output levels with the exception of the phono stage - it still seems to have really low output compared to the others. Any suggestions?

Hey Chris, given the clues you found (numbers written on connectors, etc.) were you able to determine what had failed or been worked on before you got the unit? Also, did you test the output transistors while you had them out? Results?
Hi Chris. At 1h15m you talk about a glue used in the factory to hold large components in place for soldering purposes. I think your theory is correct, but the glue may also be used to hold large/heavier components in place for transportation purposes. For instance, a large capacitor or transistor with a large heatsink without the glue would be under constant stress in its soldering points while in the cargo area of an airplane from Tokyo to LA or NY. There would exist constant stress in terms of resonance and vibration causing some points to eventually crack, visible by the naked eye or not. Dave Jones did a bench test specifically on that in this video: 'EEVblog 1442 - DON'T DO THIS! (PCB Vibration Testing)'. Regards,
