    Thanks for the update, Shawn. I spotted that little sequence too after I had watched your post from yesterday and it certainly piqued my interest... Good news re you and GH and good to hear things are amicable :) Also, please send my thanks to Amanda Jo for finding that new link. Such a shame Vafri will no longer be with us and that Live from Iceland has closed its cameras down :(

      Thanks for the update on the small swarm of quakes. The magma system is warming up its voice in preparation for the next performance.

    Well, the uplift is getting near the previous value when the previous drop and eruption happened, so new rock is starting to be broken as we get near the previous uplift. As you nicely pointed out yesterday, the EQs will slowly start ramping up as additional strain over previous eruption causes new tensile/shear stress which causes new rock breakage. Rinse repeat.

    Great news you had contact with GH and it background of that video is as I hoped it was. Found it really hard to believe he would make a clickbait video on purpose. So it was him coming to that worst case scenario and wanting to point it out to the public. Don't think he would do that the same way next time. But hey, we learn the most by mistakes we make.

    Not easy to strike the right balance. If the whole fissure system unzipped to the sea and repaved a large area in magma, people will demand "why didn't you warn us!". And if you say "it could happen, but not likely" and it doesn't, you get labelled as alarmist.

  • @reekoreeko1857
    @reekoreeko1857 วันที่ผ่านมา +10

    To add, I have much respect for GH for what he does and the time and effort he puts into such short videos. Along with my surprise at "that" one, I said as much, no respect is lost just slight dissappointment, it happens. A chat between you two would be most enlightening and interesting, fingers crossed for that. Cheers

    • @fake6168
      @fake6168 วันที่ผ่านมา +6

      i dont rly understand why people are disappointed; the scenario he mentioned is growing more and more likely the longer this whole series continues and he backed it up with solid argumentation. people would probably also say hes an alarmist if ruang didnt produce its vei5 eruption couple months ago...those things need adressing as long as they arent based on made up data

    • @Firebuck
      @Firebuck วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @@fake6168 I mostly agree. The thing is, Iceland has a lot of volcanologists paying attention to what's going on there on an everyday basis. His scenario (more lava erupted each time, and typically in the first few hours) is well know to them and probably most residents of Iceland. Volcanoes in some other parts of the world don't get nearly as much scrutiny and that's where GH really shines.

    • @Dragrath1
      @Dragrath1 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Firebuck True though the flip side of high attention volcanoes is that there can be a real incentive to underplay the more dangerous scenarios partly to combat alarmism especially where there are economic impacts. At the very least in the case of setting regulatory standards in the US there is a culture of regulators expecting experts to "compromise" with business interests underplaying suppressing or interfering with the evidence. Now whether that is the case or not in Iceland and to what extent if there is, is not something I can answer but I can see why he might have felt the need to bring attention to the possibility.
      I do agree he might not have presented it in the best format though.

    • @reekoreeko1857
      @reekoreeko1857 15 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Mostly, fake6169, because GH is not really known for over dramatisation. While he gives opinions, which is fine, the video in question was over dramatic -the title too. he was explaining one scenario, one with a smaller chance than others as though it was likely. He did admit there was a 10% chance later,I believe, while not going into the likely events. I was disappointed but absolutely forgive because I have a lot of respect for him and admire the content he makes 99.99% of the time, lol.

    Thanks Shawn for another good video..
    And I am very pleased to see that you have made your peace with GH. Keeping this very short, I have considerable respect for both Shawn and GH, but on this occasion GH uncharacteristically misjudged the tone of his video so it came across as exaggerating the threat, and Shawn misjudged the tone of his reaction when it slipped from professional disagreement into an attack on GH's integrity (or at least it came across that way). It happens - we all make mistakes and misjudgements at times! So very glad it is sorted amicably.

      I personally stopped watching GH videos a while ago because he is too often covering unlikely scenarios in a way that can be easily misinterpreted. I am a geologist and got annoyed by his sensationalist tendencies.

    The Geology hub channel who posted the video about Grindavik being likely to get the eruption, also said the Lewotobi volcano in Indonesia would have a big eruption. Lewotobi erupted last night killing 10 people and injuring more than 50 people. What if he's right about Grindavik???

    I would like to see you do some collaboration with the "Hub". He is informed and so are you. I was indeed wondering if you had a similar concept about the activity. I definitely believe in second opinions. Iceland has been a real educational adventure since the volcanoes woke up again. I am also very well traveled around the contiguous lower 48 and love your descriptive commentary videos about parts of the west that I have looked at so many times over the years. Thanks Shawn. Yes, it's a shame that the vafri page is ending soon. I've found it to be very useful, especially when switched to show colour-coded earthquake depths on the main map. Until very recently, it had a link to a combined webcam page with over 30 available cameras, but that site went down last week, and still shows a 'Whoops!...' page. Maybe we've lost that facility already.
    But thanks too for the new link. I've bookmarked it for use after the vafri page shuts down.

    Could a volcanologist please answer: What is the relationship between modern Iceland and large igneous provinces (LIP)? In particular, if I were standing around in a LIP during its formation, what would it be like? Would it be more active than current Iceland? Is current Iceland the start of a new LIP?

    I imagine scientists discussing or arguing over possible scenarios is common in the field. Strangely, this scenario reminds me of the plot of Dante's Peak when Harry Dalton was convinced the volcano was going to erupt and urges a mass evacuation of the town, while his superior Dr Paul Dreyfus wanted to avoid the USGS getting negative publicity over a potential false alarm (like Mammoth Mountain in 1980). Dalton was later proven right and the volcano destroys the town by the end of the film.
    Of course, I hope the worst-case scenario does not happen, but GH emphasizes that he'd rather raise his concerns and be proven wrong than say nothing and it ends up costing lives and livelihoods.
