Happy New Year. Not playing or practicing now, have cancer and am on chemo. But have followed you for years. This one is number one for me. Hope next year can get back to the game I’ve loved for 62 years.
Good luck with your therapy! Have a family member going through the same treatment now too. You’ll be back swinging again and we’ll be here to help when you are 👊🙂
This is soooo true. I had always been a rusher, that leads to an arm intensive swing, often leaving body & its bigger muscles behind & unable to participate to maximise force. When I’m doing this well my swing appears slow & effortless. At top it creates a pause you wouldn’t notice in real time playback, that pause allows me a split second to really see the ball & get my lower body more involved in the follow through. When playing well the pause seems to last longer, world is in slo-mo. What a feeling ❤
This video is GOLD! Thit drill really set me up for my tempo which I've been looking for in years. After learning that I complete 18 holes with no strain felt at all on my body. Everything just felt effortless! Thank you so much for this AMG Golf!
Thank you as always for the great tipcs and explanation. one follow up is earlier in the video you mentioned pushing off the lead foot asa trigger and at the end, the drill is stepping down into the trail heel. How should I sequence or balance the two to initiate takeaway and then backswing? thank you!
Love this drill when you billed it “The only drill that you need,” Great to have a refresher course of it with the slightly different emphasis. Do you have a go-to drill for prevention of fat shots? Thank you.
As the saying goes “Free, free at last”. I’ve been working on my driver and focused on the saying “slow and low” that at times makes the swing difficult to start and feel wooden. Using your advice I’ve added more tempo to the start and adding a slight pause at the top makes the process much more fluid. Thanks for the lesson and looking forward to future instruction.
Thanks Guys and Happy New Year🎉 Fantastic drill! I was caight up with the individual movement, complete the back swing, full shoulder turn, re-centre and swing. Tried this drill completely change my concept!
Oh yeah, when I worked on this drill and made this a good habit, I improved my considerably. It felt funny, almost as if I stopped at the top, but as I made the transition to the downswing, I learned to look for that feeling of tension building in the chest and arms. If I don't feel that tension, I'm not relaxing the little muscles. Keep up with the great lessons. At least you are always giving me something to work on at the range
Excellent visual! Just tried a few swings in the garage. Looking to get fitted on friday and this is the transition that i am working on and want my clubs fitted for. Thanks!
Thanks for the great tips on tempo! I’ve been working on my driver lately, and it’s interesting because when I follow your advice, it works really well for my 7 iron -I’m hitting consistent draws with it now. But when I switch to the driver, things get a bit messy. Any advice on adjustments I should make when transitioning from 7 iron to the driver?
Would love a video on Aim.. I always seem to aim right. I use alignment sticks when practicing. Just some ideas for on the course. Amazing content as usual. Happy New Year from Australia 🇦🇺 🎉
I forget where I read it, but someone said to watch a pro of your choosing or someone who's swing you like and to try and match their tempo. I did this and it completely opened my eyes that my takeaway and backswing was twice as long as it should be. The club was not loading or unloading properly at all. Highly recommend giving it a try
I’m working on learning to supinate my lead wrist on the downswing. Interested in hearing your advice. My swing mechanics aren’t too shabby but I know if I could deloft the club face I would compress the ball more effectively.
Trying to fix a flip that needs to be there because of the movements leading up to the release is a recipe for frustration and wasting time. I just looked at the swings on your channel, how would you rate your weight shift?
Happy new year! You might complement the drill with the freedom to lift the lead heel. That would make the sequence more balanced, leading to ‘ la dance du golfe’ .
Possibly. We find most golfers don’t need to lift the heel to made a more than adequate turn. So for many it overturns the pelvis and hurts their sequence. We like to only recommend it when necessary 😉
@ I understand. Maybe the less athletic players, a bit older or dealing with injuries, would benefit from the conformation that lifting the heel of the lead foot isn’t less functional. Greetings from the Netherlands!
do a "takeaway" search on our channel, you should find a few videos there to help. If you need something more specific, let us know what that would be.
I actually say the name Vijaaay Singh in my mind with an emphasise on the aaay at the top of the backswing, gets me in a nice 3 to 1 ratio, sounds a bit crazy i know, but works a treat for me, anyway Happy New Year fellas thanks for all your great work👍🍻🥳🙏
Trying to square the concept of the "arm float" with your other video on left arm abduction. When you demonstrate how to let the arms "finish" in the backswing, it looks like (emphasis here) that left arm is working across the chest. Is that movement just the left shoulder protracting? I hope that makes sense. I've tried limiting the amount my left arm works across my chest, but my arms have seem to gotten a little short in the process. Wondering if that arm trail off is the protraction piece of the movement. Thanks for excellent content as always.
It could be, it could be that you don’t quit have enough adduction, or it could be a small combo of both. The arm needs to protract and adduct enough to get your watch opposite your trail shoulder 👍
Great vid as always. Something I find interesting, that I think kind of gets neglected, is foot work. For example, it seems to properly “roll” the trail foot a lot things in the swing need to be completed kind of correctly. If there’s a channel that can turn that unsexy topic into sexy it’s you guys!
Great timing for this vid: Was working on this exact feeling yesterday- when it happened I gained 20 yds with my six iron (185 carry). What helped me was imagining pushing someone on a swing: you push as the swing reaches the top. Love the drill and may use that as a preshot routine to help keep the feeling!
Thanks for this! Good clarification of how to do it. My problem is that when I've tried the drill I tend to just move way off the ball to the trail side, rather than, apparently, rotating and staying more centered. I'd like to incorporate this into my practice, but don't want to engrain the wrong thing. Any thoughts? Thanks!
Moving off the ball is fine. About ~1.5" puts you right in the range of the best players in the world. But as with anything you're trying to change in your swing, you have to go slow enough to be able to actually do what you're trying to do. Just trying to do something doesn't cut it in a golf swing that last 1 second. Strip away the speed so you learn and do the thing. Adding speed back in is the easiest thing to do once you've improved the motion.
I would love to see you demonstrate this same technique for a mid-iron vs driver, is it really the same? It works well for me with irons, not so much for driver … video suggests am not keeping elbow tucked, but not sure.
Would this same concept be useful for putting as well? It would be awesome if you could do a video (with GEARS as well 🤞) explaining the different putting strokes/techniques and the best way to achieve each (conventional vs lead hand low vs claw, etc.). Currently using a "prayer" grip (after moving from lead hand low) and LAB Link 1, but I still feel like my shoulders open too much in the through stroke more often than they should, causing offline results.
Would love a video on the cause/correction of toe contact. The past two years I've been so far off the toe that I'll miss the grooves, have even hit quite a few toe shanks 😔
@@hawkness_monster Good. Now look at the amount your lead hip moves towards the target line compared to how much the trail hip moves away in your backswing. Those should be equal amounts.
When a round gets out of control, swing back longer and be very conscious of not rushing the downswing….but also, focusing on hips, knees and feet lets it happen naturally, without rushing-which is a conscious movement
I'm rushed when I feel I've got things left to do in the downswing. When the back swing is behaving I feel free time at the top and when that happens the ball comes out well
Question: Have you ever done metronome study with the pros? I took a metronome to a PGA tounrament practice range and found, generally, they swing the same tempo with each club, and around 72 bpm Secondly, it seems fashion for Asian men golfers to take the club back very slow in the takeaway......(Matsuyama, Im, Morakawa, etc.), your comments pls
Every swing we capture has its time profile recorded. The overwhelming majority of great players are fast early. There will always be tempo exceptions. Right now, two notable exceptions are Morakawa and Im. Matsuyama is not slow off the ball. Just looking at the current top 10, 9 are doing what we recommend in the video.
Can you guys please clarify backswing depth? I’m a tall guy and tend to get my lead arm a bit above my shoulder plane at the top and the butt end of the grip pretty much above where my shoe laces would be tied (if that makes sense). My tendency is to get the shaft a bit steep coming down and then body compensations through impact. I’ve been told I need to get more depth at the top and get the butt end of the grip more above my mid ankle at the top using more body rotation but really struggle to do that without the club and arms going really deep early which I’ve seen in your previous videos isn’t good
Sure! Stand in front of a mirror to see what you're doing. From a standing posture, move your lead arm up and across so your watch is opposite your trail shoulder. That's what your arm needs to do. With your arm there, make a backswing pivot. Notice where your hand is relative to your trail foot in the mirror 👊

Goreat tip, but showing Chris Kirk's swing in slow motion kind of defeats the purpose of seeing the speed difference in the first part of the takeaway, it would show tempo better in real time I think...
We debated about that, and you make a good point for the "discerning golfer" like yourself. BUT many golfers struggle to see subtle differences on video so we decided to slow him down. I know it's kinda like putting a mustache on the Mona Lisa but we made this decision for a wider demo 👊😉
