  • Seem like a century ago. Oh. It was. What we still need, although it feels more elusive than ever.
"Solidarity", was the last song before the encore in a historic concert held at, The Ritz in NYC, in 1986 (Black Uhuru Alive). Remastering this, I realized how tired I am of the of the slights to Junior Reid, who represented Black Uhuru wholeheartedly and stayed tuned in to his audience every step of the way. He's a great performer.
Must especially big up the gorgeous lighting design here by Stafford Ashani and Edgar Gordon... celebrating solidarity under candy-colored lights. In those days of tight budgets, Stafford used to say video was all about the lighting, and he was proven right.
Hit me hard to hear about the passing of legendary bass player, Christopher Meredith, just as I was finishing up the remastering of this video. He was shining in this youthful performance. May you rest in peace and love, Chris, along with beloved Puma Jones and Stafford.
    This one is for you.
Give thanks to the Step Lively crew (see other clips for credits) and the wonderful audience at the Ritz that memorable night. Special kudos to cameraman Jefferson Miller for slipping so smoothly offstage and back.
And to Steven Van Zandt for his great song and inspiration.
