This was great. I thought I knew what my predominant fault was. But after hearing this I realized that my true worst fault was the hidden cause of my other faults. I am melancholic. And it is fear and sorrow which lead me to other faults. I really appreciate the example of saints who shared the same temperament - that way I can look at them as examples of what to do to gain perfection by God's grace. Thank you Father: God bless.

Sanguine - Man; Melancholic - Eagle

I took a personality quiz on this and was predominantly Phlegmatic and secondarily (is that a word?) Sanguine. I relate to both and the results make sense. It is surprising to me that my two more dominant features are opposite when considering stimulus and reaction.

  • @fourwinged

In my findings, our bodies have two switches that cause the four humours -
Those two switches are the following:
    High metabolism vs. Low metabolism
Quick blood flow vs. slow blood flow
Those who have high metabolism and quick blood flow are predisposed to being sanguine by nature.
Those who have a low metabolism and slow blood flow are predisposed to being melancholic by nature.
You can have a quick blood flow and a low metabolism (phlegmatic?) or a high metabolism and a slow blood flow (choleric?), which would lead you to the other two temperaments.
Blood flow regulates how impulsive or reactive you can be to something, but it's easy come easy go or long come long go.
Metabolism means it takes shorter or longer to "digest" something - that is, you want to take something in fully or you want to consume as much as possible, and this reflects psychologically on the individual. Low metabolic people are more predisposed to becoming sentimental while high metabolic people are more predisposed to sensationalism.

    • @gregoryrozek9411
      @gregoryrozek9411 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I'm not sure I follow how you link specifically each metabolism with psychology in the last paragraph. Isn't phlegmatic the obese-prone and lethargic temperament because it has low metablism in the iatromathematical literature? Loving to relax by eating and storing fat and water from it in the body? Also isn't choleric eating a lot and quickly and staying fit and having a lot of energy to cosntantly do something and not be able to stay still? I would guess you might have accidently written the opposite words of what were you thinking about (a cognitive missspelling), but maybe I miss something

I would like to thank you for this homily. I am studying the temperaments and this is so good and instructional. I also discovered with this homily why St. Therese of Lisieux was sent by God to be my best saint-friend in 1998: she is melancholic like me. Oh my I'm in tears. Is there a written version of this homily? Thanks so much God bless you

This is only the main parts, but I hope this helps you!
      1) The Sanguine Temperament - Positives: Optimistic, extroverted, friendly, agreeable, compassionate, cheerful, enthusiastic. Negatives: Superficial, inconstant, and hasty in judgement, talkative, prone to vanity, flattery, and envy. Tend to rely on their feelings in matter of religion and can be quickly discouraged.
-Predominant faults tend to center around sensuality, making them prone to gluttony and lust. They need to be mindful to avoid bad company, and should strive to develop the virtues of detachment, silence, temperance, modesty and chastity. They should practice daily acts of self-denial. Examples of Saints with the sanguine temperament: St. Augustine, St. Theresa of Avila, St. Francis Xavier, St. Rose of Lima.
      2) The Choleric Temperament - Positives: Act favorably to reason and high ideals. Tend to be very practical and very active with great powers of concentration and endurance. A tendency to be strong willed, constant, and generous. Negatives: Strong passions and are prone to anger. Obstinate, stubborn, and impatient. A tendency to be domineering and hard with a lack of compassion and sympathy for their fellow man.
-Predominant faults are pride and/or anger. They need to be mindful to develop the virtues of humility, meekness, kindness, and charity. They should foster a devotion to the sacred heart and say the litany of humility daily. They should read and meditate on the sufferings of Christ. They should strive to calmly accept humiliations and frustrations. Examples of Saints with the choleric temperament: St. Jerome, St. Ignatius, St. Francis de Sales.
      3) Melancholic Temperament - Positives: Sympathetic with a tenderness and generosity towards their friends. Inclined towards reflection, piety, and the interior life. Negatives: Surrender too easily and are overly reserved and overly serious (except with close friends).
-Predominant faults are sorrow, fear, aversion, despondency, and despair. They need to pay close attention to resentful feelings or over sensitiveness, and strive to develop a joyous attitude by keeping careful custody of the mind in regards to sad or depressing thoughts. They need to work on the virtues of fortitude, charity, and hope. They should develop a spirit of prayer, since they are inclined to interior life. Examples of Saints with the melancholic temperament: St. Bernard, St: Aloysius Gonzaga, St. Therese of Lisieux.
      4) Phlegmatic Temperament: Positives: Tranquil, discreet, sober, and mentally balanced with good common sense. Not easily irritated, demand very little. Prudent, sensible, and work with a measured pace. Negatives: Procrastination, ease and comfort, unambitious with a lacking of interest in events around them.
-Predominant fault: Sloth. Must be mindful to develop deep convictions to rouse themselves and demand of themselves methodical and constant efforts toward greater perfection. Examples of Saints with a phlegmatic temperament: St. Thomas Aquinas.

A quite good light overview of the four humours. A balance of the four is generally always been considered the key .
I only ask that you please do not follow the " prescribed" norm of adjusting them manually. It generally suggests leaches as a portion of the multi-fold adjustment. Especially, for the Sanguine.

I didn't know a person responds to all stimuli in a way that makes the stimulus like it is in the abstract making the object of the stimulus non relevant. Because they don't. People react differently to different stimuli. If I observe the action of a person to a stimulus and put that into one of these categories and then observe them reacting to a stimulus that produces a reaction that can be put into a different category than the former, then what. Also a person's mood can change so that they do not always respond to the exact same stimuli in the same way.
When I heard this back some time ago my first impression was that this sounds a lot like the astrology characterization of people but with four categories instead of twelve.

    • @jmwillilams023

Most people have one main temperament with a minor one. For example, I am predominantly choleric and secondary melancholic. After much reading and studying the temperaments I found I am almost 50/50 with choleric being dominant by just a few numbers. I have taken the "test" about 5 times in about 15 years and it always comes out about the same. According to my research, In this case a temperament can be altered where my melancholic temperament can dominate.
But when a temperament is more dominant by bigger numbers, ie., 70/30, changing temperament is highly unlikely.

[ 5 Temperaments Already ] Hi Fr. and Sensus. I hope the catholic church updates the temperaments because there's a new one called supine. They are usually those who seem to have blank faces, no emotion when they talk. They are compatible with all temperaments but their downside is their lack of emotion or indifference (more than a phlegmatic) and low energy but they are servant oriented like phelgmatics (I'm a phlegmatic but can't be told coz; somehow I've decreased its negatives like saints did, though it comes back- laziness especially). God bless. Rev. 21:4

    • @jessfahy7584

I wonder if this fifth new temperment as you described is more of a result of it cultural conditioning, being desensitized by over-stimulation, over-exposure to media and constant noise, and a dullness that settles in our souls from our culture pouring ourselves into things that are nothing but emptiness. just something that makes me wonder

It's centuries old in the west at least---the four "humours" were the basis of middle-ages medicine.
