4-Seconds Top Fuel Dragsters @ Hockenheimring NitrOlympX 2017!

  • I have never been so anxious to go see an event as in this case. And almost exclusively because I absolutely wanted to hear and "feel" these monsters. And I wasn't disappointed at all!
    Top Fuel Dragster are the quickest accelerating vehicles in the world, the fastest drag racing category and the loudest racing cars on Earth. Top Fuel races on a distance of 305 metres (1,000 ft) and not the traditional 402 metres (1/4 miles) after a fatal crash in 2008. They're moved by supercharged V8 engines powered by nitromethane (around 90%) and methanol (10%) able to push the car from 0 to 160 km/h (0-100 mph) in less then a second and complete the 300 metres strip with speeds over 500 km/h (310 mph) with an exit time of less than 4-seconds! Power of this engine is estimated to be from 8,000 to 10,000hp.
    Ok, numbers can give you an idea of what you are watching but there's nothing that can describe what you feel being there in person when a Top Fuel opens its throttle. All your body and organs shake and your brain can hardly understand what the hell it's going on. That's something every person on Earth should experience at least once in his life... Oh and this video just gives you and idea less than 1% about their sound.

    Only the people that have been to a Top Fuel event know how brutally violent these things are. They rob the air from your breath, flutter your eyes, beat your entire body and make your feet uncomfortable. Holy crap these things are awesome.

    2:20 the Tire deformation is crazy

    • @sfprivateer
      @sfprivateer 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's because the tire is specifically designed to behave that way. If you put in a similar tire built like any normal racing tire (the tread I mean) the tire wouldn't expand like that. The purpose is to make the tire superwide at the start to stick maximum to the track, and the faster you go, the bigger the radius becomes and thus gives you way more top speed.

    • @thunderheads4103
      @thunderheads4103 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Called Tire Wrinkle and Tangential Spring. Racers and engineers used to say that they would never break 300mph because the math didn't allow. The math said they couldn't...until they did and they didn't know why. Tires. That's why. At the last push, the tires release their stored up energy. Take that F1 lol.
      These guys are slower. I was seeing 4 seconds.

    I remember my 1st time seeing a top fuel launch.
    Literally yelling at the top of my voice and unable to hear myself.
    The punishment your chest takes is crazy.
    Watching a failed launch still drop a 7 or 8 second 1/4 makes you realise just how hard these things push off the line

      Drag racing in Europe is like child's play compared to the USA, not only for HP. I mentioned it before, here in all over Europe we have only 6 top fuel events. Hockenheim is the closest for me, a 5 hour trip(290 miles) In the USA there's a dragstrip in every corner of every state ,I guess. Therefore I envy you Yanks......

      As someone else mentioned, the highest hp number I've seen is 8,000. Even with 'just' 8,000 hp, the speeds are so ridiculous that piles of rules to try and keep them from going any faster. There are restrictions on air intake size, gear ratios, engine displacement, etc.

    OMG, Bozzy! There is nothing quite like Top Fuel Dragsters. For the record, I've watched these things on tv blast the 1/4 mile since I was a little boy, but your video representation of them is actually better than what gets televised. Both the audio and video quality is so crisp and clean... pretty amazing! I like that angle from directly behind the burnout box. You don't see that one on tv. If they show it briefly, it's not for the duration of the run from start to finish. Those huge V8s are so earth shattering, even some of the pit crew members still jump during launch. LOL! That's some real power right there... the kind you never get complacent with, but also the kind you can't get enough of. In person, they will rattle your cage and everything inside it, won't they? haha. Fantastic work, my friend! Cheers!

    • @stefankoe
      @stefankoe 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @RealCapo88 No worries, I absolutely love top fuel. I just wanted to be a Grammar Nazi because David's statement: "the quickest accelerators built by human hands" is simply not correct. Scientiests can for example accelerate protons to about 10^21 g, which is significantly higher than top fuel's max 8g acceleration :P But yeah, in my opinion even "the quickest human-transporting accelerators built by human hands" wouldn't be correct, as rockets can accelerate so much quicker (and don't rely on tyre grip, since they move forward through propulsion).

    There's nothing quite like the smell of nitro first thing in the morning!! ;) Seriously, I've grown up and lived in So. Cal. all my life. As a teenager back in the 60's, we had drag strips everywhere out here. I practically lived at Lions Drag Strip in Wilmington, CA. The cars weren't as fast back then but the sounds were the same. We could stand less than 30 feet from the cars as they launched off the line. That nitromethane smell in your face made you gag but it was heavenly! God, I miss those days. Now all the major strips are gone except the Pomona Fairplex. It's used just a few times a year, mainly for the NHRA Winternationals and Finals. Those are now the only two major meets here in the area. Sad...

    I hadn't realised the european drag racing bodies had followed suit from the USA and switched to 1000ft runs instead of the quarter mile. A little disappointing, since it means records before and after the change aren't comparable at all. Won't be long before we do the same here in Australia though, I suppose.

    • @Narutofan1000k
      @Narutofan1000k 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The USA is approaching a point where they most likely will shorten it more or some type of limit. The current speed record is 339 mph. So we are even faster now then before the switch.

    • @ChattanoogaDave
      @ChattanoogaDave 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I asked them at Sonoma and they had to do it because the cars were too fast and didn't have enough runoff room on the older tracks. Leah just ran a 3.64 1000 ft and Robert Haight just ran a 3.78 or something like that at 338 mph which is getting nutty. Cruz Pedragon ran off in Denver after the chutes failed luckily he had enough runoff and brakes.

    • @BigMuddyCountry
      @BigMuddyCountry 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      IHRA still runs quarter miles, NHRA has it shortened to 1000 feet. Funny thing is, literally about 90% of the speed is reached in the 8th mile. 8th mile they are typically hitting 300mph, 1000 feet 325 or 330 and even full quarter they may only do 330 or 335.

I'd guess you'd love spotting at NASCAR's road tracks. I've had as good a time at Watkins Glen as I ever had when I saw F1 there, every year from 1968 on. There's a lot of good TH-cam about all aspects this giant and uniquely Ah-mur-i-cun sport. Actually I'm an F1 fan. Aged out of recreational drugs and alcohol. Both of these American sports are world-sized and watched world-wide. My NFL fans say golf is for sissies-have you ever played 19 holes in August on a East Coast US course in the afternoon? Or strolled down the back nine of the Master's final round. My tennis friends love to argue how that's the most arduous world-sized sport. Some brothers threatened to beat the crap outta me when I suggested that, no, boxing is not the world's biggest sport. Me? I might struggle to define arrogance and snobbery-but I know it when I see it.

I was just to the side, less than 10 feet away as the cars launched. While I plugged and covered my ears as best I could, the noise was so loud it hurt my chest. I was also showered with black, burnt rubber droplets falling out of the sky for the next 10 seconds. One run at that distance was enough. Meanwhile, the crew members routinely stand nearby

    • @sorwis
      @sorwis 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      One run. Many major components carry over to multiple runs but valve springs, bearings, piston rings and spark plugs are replaced every run. Spark plugs are actually destroyed halfway down the quarter mile by heat and the engines diesel to the finish line. Compression and glowing hot exhaust valve burns the nitromethane even with the twin spark plugs melted. Clutch pack is destroyed in a single run, too. Engines blowing up is also pretty common so you often need to replace more than the routine parts.

      Yep. It's cool to see the teams rebuild the engines. The job takes around 40 minutes and you see how incredibly sturdy some of the components(conrods are hilarious) are yet they still fail during a short run. I don't know how much horsepower these European versions make but 11k hp was broken in the US not too long ago.

      lol not gonna happen for a long time. Most powerful electric car currently makes about 2000hp. Even at its lightweight setting they weigh the same as one of these cars. About 20% of the power of a tfd.

    • @Andrea-on5ry
      @Andrea-on5ry 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, they burn through the whole tank in a single pass, and they are decently sized tanks.
      Also they run on pure NOS

    • @MikeGubisch
      @MikeGubisch 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Disney how many gears do they have? I can't hear any upshifts

    • @Andrea-on5ry

      I am not sure, but i think they have a 2 speed automatic

    • @SuperSonicSenna
      @SuperSonicSenna 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Disney they actually have no transmission. Instead they've got a giant multi-disc clutch pack. I think they use up to 5 discs at once. These things make so much power that no gearbox on earth would be able to withstand the forces. In fact, some of the discs physical weld together at the end of the run! That's 11,000 hp for ya!

    • @Andrea-on5ry
      @Andrea-on5ry 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok thanks, i think i remeber something about their clutches lasting like 1 race. But the differential has to be pretty beefy though?

    How are they able to do burnouts with virtually no acceleration, while simultaneously being able to do 0-300 in such short time with no traction issues?
    Edit: they put some sort of liquid on the tyres?

    • @Narutofan1000k
      @Narutofan1000k 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are able to do a burnout because of two main reasons, the tires themselves are cold, they are air temp until after the burnout which depending on length can leave them as high as 150-200F(65-93C) and the water that is put onto them.

    • @MRFUCKOFF202
      @MRFUCKOFF202 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @tombushby2211
      @tombushby2211 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MRFUCKOFF202 they use a throttle stop when doing a burnout limiting the revs, take it off before the runa

    • @MattLitkeRacing
      @MattLitkeRacing 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Naru Dracul They are using water but you don’t want that much tire temp. Ideally within 10F of the track temp. The tire will grow in size which effects the tuneup with too much temp and the surface of the tire will blister. Longer burnouts also put more heat in the clutch and burn more fuel. Shorter burnouts work best

  • @MrPentre
    @MrPentre 6 ปีที่แล้ว
