People who don’t like meshuggah:
“Its like a jackhammer to your head!”
People who love meshuggah:
“It’s like a jackhammer to your head!”
I love heavy metal but I have to admit this is way too intense for me....
I love how I read those differently lol
@@harolddeschenes4640 You get used to it, listen to Demiurge, Obzen, Spasm, NMCC, Sane, Neurotica, Concatenation(remix) Meshuggah is great, but if you start on the most extreme end it can be a turn off to their music.
Lol!!!!! So true.
Great point
Just for Judson 's face when the song kicks in it's all worth it.
Classic reaction!
He got the thousand yard stare about half way through to 😂
bleed is like a rite of passage for every music reaction channel lol
unfortunately
@@uraniumcranium2613 Nah, it's still a masterpiece.
Pisces is a bigger rite of passage
@@ifer1280 didn't ask
Love how he keeps touching his piano for comfort. Great review.
I bet if you'd have played him this a couple of months ago, Judson would've been horrified. Great to see him picking out bits he liked, even if he wasn't a fan overall.
It's so weird to imagine people not liking metal. Like, I get they exist in large numbers, but it's still so foreign to me. I've gotten so into it all.
Part of Meshuggah's appeal is this deliberate monotony. Bleed is the best example of this. This one-note repetition that Judson refers to, comparing it to a jackhammer, is a very purposeful part of Meshuggah's sound: The stark harmonic context, the almost drone-like melodies, are there to plant the listener's attention down. The relentless rhythms work together to that effect. The very low notes on the guitars add to the "lack" of melody, and the songs become something like rhythmic, aggressive... mantras. It is well known that many of Meshuggah's (and relevant artists') fans refer to their music as ...meditative (myself included).
Yeah the "Zen" in the title of the album is intentional, it's supposed to be sort of hypnotic
I heard a non metalhead refer to music once as "the last magic on Earth" and this song is a great representation of that mentality. A shaman in trance, but it's Bleed instead of a drum circle.
Wow, that makes me think of this band much differently. I don’t like Meshuggah, I think they’re boring as hell, but I’m gonna re-listen through Chaosphere with this in mind. Thank you internet stranger!
Anytime! 😄@@sireffortlessgarbage7922
Two quick things:
1) You both should have a Podcast.
2) Judson should make you react to Classical / Jazz Music as well.
Greetings from a chilean new subscriber 👍
great ideas
Just saw this live again tonight. It is good on record; it is absolutely INSANE live. The band is just incredible and no recording can harvest the energy and sound they put out
true
I did too!!! First time seeing them live and was absolutely fucking amazed. They are 110% a LIVE band
Bruhhhh I saw them at the San Diego show. Such rhythmic assault. No one will ever replace them.
@Turcomichael hard to believe a group that's been around for 35+ years has never softened and still goes that hard/loud live and still has most of the original members.
Agreed
ObZen is a mix of the english words "obscene and zen".
Cheers.
It actually isn’t!
Once I saw an interview with their drummer Thomas Haake, who said ob in obzen comes from the Latin prefix ob-, which means ‘anti’ or ‘the contrary of’.
So ObZen is anti-zen. The opposite of Zen.
It’s kind of funny to use the Latin prefix to go along Zen,
which is ancient Japanese, but the outcome means what it means and the sound remind you of ‘obscene’, which their music is in the most rhythmic way possible.
Seeing Meshuggah on Friday. I cannot wait to see them again. Best live performance I've ever seen.
Agreed 💯%
I wish you the best of luck that they are going to play Bleed live
I'd never pass up another opportunity to see them live, lol. This is my 3rd time. :)
@@meandfriendstv anything they play will be a pleasure to experience my man
I was there man. Hell of a show
Meshuggah..It's exhausting to listen to sometimes, offputting, yet somehow it can pull you in. I think Break Those Bones That Sinews Gave Motion would be a good next one.
You should definitely get him to check out other songs. Despite being a top tier song, I don't think Bleed is the best song for introducing someone to Meshuggah especially given it's a one of a kind song within their catalogue. Demiurge or Rational Gaze are a lot easier to digest or even Born in Dissonance and the title track, Obzen, which I'd say has a nice mix of the slower sludgier parts and the fast paced bits like Bleed.
Yeah, OK, I'll say it: Bleed is overrated and does drag on for a fair bit. I appreciate the stamina and limb independence skill cap is high, but it could easily have been 3 minutes shorter and not lost any of it's oomph.
If Judson found Bleed monotonous, he'll probably think the same of Demiurge and especially Born in Dissonance (As much as I love both).
I actually feel a great entry track to Meshuggah would be Do Not Look Down. Plenty of movements melodically and the typical syncpation/polyrhythm mindbuggery happening while also pretty short and succinct.
@@gurushen99Dancers to a Discordant System is another great one that has a lot of depth to it. Honestly I see it as their most "signature" song, it pretty much has every element that makes Meshuggah... Meshuggah.
@@gurushen99Yessss Do Not Look down is my favorite track of theirs! It greatly shows their rhythmic complexity without being overbearing. And a killer guitar solo with cool lyrics to go along with it
demiurge, in death is life and rational gaze are the 3 classic groovy ones for me
Agreed something that shows Fredrick is the equal to Thomas, basically anything from destroy erase improve and chaosphere really
Future Breed Machine is a popular one that has some good vibes midway through. I think the pianist might enjoy that track a bit more.
Ohh yes please
Co-signed! Destroy Erase Improve is still my favorite album to this day, but I have to admit I pretty much love everything from them. Their last three albums have been excellent.
He would enjoy Gods Of Rapture even more, it has that fusion sounding solo section.
The best description of Meshuggah’s style I have ever heard was 3 guys doing their own thing out of time in-time.
i love that we get the richard cam too in the corner
I dont remember if youre already familiar with Dimmu Borgir, but those orchestral live versions would be right in your wheelhouse(?), atleast i would think so
What song should we start with?
@@Greatmeasures Id personally go with "Progenies of the great apocalyspe" or " Gateways" from their live dvd "Forces of the northern night". Im pretty sure they also have a Wacken consert with orchestra so those songs might also be on their setlist there.
@@GreatmeasuresAm I a joke to you, Richard? "Progenies of the Great Apocalypse" live at Spektrum. 😎 "We add the song to the list, just for you" You hurt my feelings, Richard. 😭🤭🤣
@@Loendt that’s right! So sorry about that. We’re actually filming at the theater tomorrow. I’ll make sure we do it first thing in the morning. 🤘
@@Greatmeasures YES!!!!!!!!! 🤘💥💫
Would be cool to see reaction to some Tigran Hamasyan stuff, like Leviation 21.
Jazz pianist influenced by Meshuggah, Tool (among others)
This song is just a crushing wall of sound that seems like it's all coming from one instrument or object of some sort
Richard: "You ready?... You're not ready"
Entire Comment Section: "Correct lol"
Fredrik Thorendal's melodies and guitar work in general was what originally turned me on to Meshuggah back in the Destroy Erase Improve days. Bleed really is just a monster of a song though lol
Great videos as always, thank you! Any Between the Buried and Me on the horizon?
I like how the guy with black shirt is just out there vibing
Completely understand where you are coming from, Judson. It took me a while to get into them, now they are a good band to unwind with, for me.
first reaction channel/content i actually enjoy watching :)
I never know if I enjoy this song or not, it’s really a mood song it can sound amazing one day & gets your head banging but on another you wonder why you put it on as you feel a headache coming on.
I can't really enjoy it since every time I put it on, I'm not really listening to it as much as I am studying it.
I feel that with music in general.
Mood/context can drastically alter the effect of a song.
Saw them perform this live a couple weeks ago, and it was incredible! The whole show was.
I hope you guys will do more from this band as they are one of the more unique bands out there. A song like Rational Gaze or Nebulous would be very interesting.
Another great video, thanks guys. The live version from ‘Alive’ actually sounds even better.
The Swedes like you as well Judson
Aww shucks…thats very kind.
"you're not ready" :smug face: LOL
Sick shirt brother 🤘. Awesome reaction as always
Loved how he tried to get a grasp of what fred's solo scale was just to realize the bastard shreds chromatically.
the pianists' little improvisation in the beginning got me 100% invested in his perspective.
Meshuggah is perhaps the most intriguing band out there. There's been a lot of jazz fusion influence in their sound, unless I'm mistaken, since forever. The vocal is "hermetic", "straight", "colorless". But I consider it a bold, avant-garde, interesting, disconcerting, intriguing sound. But it's not a "fun" sound to listen to, it's very "cerebral", like playing chess, I don't know. The current Sepultura I find much more interesting, and also has very complex arrangements and songs, but, of course, they are very different styles. Anyway, I can't come to the conclusion whether I like Meshuggah or not. But I recognize that they have a unique, "special" sound, not necessarily "catchy". OK, the band has excellent musicians and a drummer, Tomas Haake, who is impressive, although Sepultura's drummer Eloy Casagrande is superior for certain subtle details. The person who had the courage to take on this was the exceptional drums/percussion and performance specialist of drummers, Andrew Rooney, from New Zealand, who is also a very nice person...
th-cam.com/video/L1mKnRjd2Yw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=jcMMr6inWOZ6SmTE
i disagree, Jens might sound colorless to someone untrained in listening to Jens screaming,
Jens adds a lot of emotions and texture to Meshuggah`s music. But for a beginner for listening to Meshuggah, it can help to view Jens as simply an extention of Tomas Haake`s drumming.
I personally love Meshuggah i think they are one of the most important metal bands in the entire history of metal and they are the band most responsible for the modern sound of metal.
Sepultura hasn`t been interesting since Max and Iggor left
Meshuggah is overrated, and everything you see in it is your own personal delusion.
@kahwigulum overrated by whom? Haake is a beast on drums and if you ask a drummer, they will agree.
But as for the band, there are a lot more fans of Tool, Slipknot, Dream Theater, etc. Are you just focusing on a handful of people somewhere?
@@thetruth4654 You're out of the loop, man. Appearances can be deceiving and you need to learn to respect plausible, reasonable opinions that differ from your own. I know and have Meshuggah's records since their first LP in 1991 "Contradictions Collapse", when the band had a clear influence from Metallica, and was also influenced by jazz fusion. Why have several people already liked my main message??? I and everyone who liked my post would be "wrong"??? Of course not!!! If you revere Meshuggah, that's fine. But even the current Sepultura is superior, more interesting, has a more dynamic, more "colorful" sound. Meshuggah's sound is indeed "cerebral", "hermetic", which is not "fun", "catchy", the vocalist has a "straight" style, "without colors", but they are excellent musicians, a band that can be considered "avant-garde", "unique", "disconcerting", and that it has an impressive drummer, but I have already highlighted that it is a fact that Eloy Casagrande (Sepultura) is superior due to several subtle details. If you want to accept this counterpoint, this plausible, reasonable dissenting opinion: great. If you don't want to accept it, this is called "fanaticism" (which is, in practice, synonymous with "blindness"), in this case, in relation to Meshuggah. Fact.
Another suggestion for analysis, reaction, musically far superior in all aspects compared to this Meshuggah song: Death "Symbolic" (from the 1995 album "Symbolic"). Absurd thing in every way, in every aspect. Progressive Death Metal Elite!!!
I think the name of the album is a play on words, a portmanteau of Obscene and Zen.
I think the best part of this song, aside from monstrous energy and technical performance, is that you can easily bop along to it in spite of the polyrythm that underlines it. The fact that the hat and snare just chuggs along at a normal 4/4 makes it very accessible :)
I like how the gent in the corner is just vibing out in the top corner to the glory that is Meshuggah
Judson has one of the coolest voices I've ever heard.
I've been waiting for this one
Show Judson "Straws Pulled At Random" or "In Death Is Death"!
Math metal is cool, but I should have listened to Spasm
04:06 "Are you ready? "Proceed Richard" "You're not ready"
08:54 Judson was in fact, *not ready*
Great video guys!
Nice ..MW..IM from Richmond va and remember these guys thrashing downtown.when I was 16...
😮 So ready for this… play.
Wonderful video. Smiled about his commentary in the end.
Just one thing, it somehow bothers ma: there is no "triplets" in this song... please..
The face @ 5:00 is completely normal
Cool choice. ❤ - Also wondering whether Meshuggah refers to the word "meschugge", a Yiddish term for "mad, weird in the head" we still use over here in Germany...
Homie's reaction is still my reaction every time i listen to this song hahah
Really cool that you started with Meshugga.
I'd recommend to use a different song, with more various elements.
Clockworks or Born in Dissonance ...
Are you ready? You're not ready
Meshuggah + Mick Gordon Collab in another universe
Seeing them live in Boston this Saturday.. ear-plugs? check. calculator? check. scratch paper? check.
8:55 best reaction
Do you know Tigran Hamasyan's music? He's an amazing musician and a fan of Meshuggah.
When 3 people are bangin' to 3 different rhythms and they're all on the beat, you know you're listening to Meshuggah.
You should show your friend Sam Abbot's piano adaptation of this song. It's something else
YESSSSS! REAL METALHEADS UNITE!!
you ready? you're not ready LMAO
Dude looked like he was in physical pain listening to this😂
Menwhike im trancing out to the repetive patterns thomaas is belting out😂
Meshuggah is an aquired taste... I remember the first time I heard them and it was the vocals I didnt care for. It tooka couple gateway bands to get back to them, and now I can't get enough. I hope to catch them again next time theyre back in Phoenix... but again, not everyone's cup of tea.
Just tell him that Bleed is to metal drummers what Erlkonig is to classic pianists. He'll get it.
I keep coming back cause it sounds like a sweet Harley idling.
Wait till you hear this LIVE
I've commented this before, but you should really do a reaction to Wintersun, preferably Sons of Winter and Stars, but any of the live rehearsal song will suffice.
showing him the video 'i wonder where that blood comes from' could be cute to see.
Music for Epileptics.
(You Epileptics know what I'm talking about)
Meshuggah are very unique
Off kilter polyrhythmic kinetic and oh so chaotic.
Fun stuff.
I love Metal.
wow I didn't think we'd be getting to Meshuggah already lol
Doing +den spanska känslan+ would be awesome. Pretty interesting rhythmically and with the chords
vildhjarta is a must. thall
From 2008 I believe.
Yep. That’s my bad.
Give him Straws Pulled at Random. That shit hits different and its nowhere near as "extreme" as this song, but it's still Meshuggah at its best imo
💯
one thing that explains the repetitiveness of the song is that it is about an aneurysm, so the triplets is like the blood pressure firing off in the brain. Meshuggah (despite the band being Swedish, the name comes from Yiddish, and just means crazy) has a repetitive rhythmic sound overall, but this is a concept song about an aneurysm (brain bleed) so that super repetitive nature of the song is very intentional. Some other important details is that the band has been around for ages ('87), was an early adopter of 7 string guitars, popularized 8 string guitars, and essentially invented the poly-rhythm syncopated sound/genre known as Djent, but before they went in that direction they were just a very technical and super heavy thrash band. In other songs the poly-rhythms get pretty crazy with stuff like 4/4 over obscure signatures like 23/16.
I thought the album name was a play on the word obscene but adding zen so being at peace with obscenity
Please show him "Clockworks" or something in that vein.
Bleed: one of the hardest glorified rhythym exercises for all instruments. love it. Live it's a new experience.
I mean the song is about experiencing an aneurism so the jack hammer to the head is fitting. It’s not meant to be pleasant, it’s pain and fear manifested in musical form.
Its definitely one of those bands you just gotta see live to really get it. It's insane hahaha
Especially with the light tech being part of the band, and doing an insanely complicated light show live. Now, Meshugga is not a band I listen to on the regular, aside from having Bleed in one of my play lists. And a whole show is a bit much meshugga for me. But I am still glad I went to the show, just to experience the extremely cool vibe.
I just got into Meshuggah a year ago and the closest they are getting to me is a 3 hour drive away. So many of you have told me that is an easy drive considering how awesome the show will be. I'm stoked.
Unless you are epileptic 😂
This will be interesting. 😂
The jackhammer description made me laugh. There’s some truth there.
He doesn't seem to realize that it is intended to make you feel uneasy, like a horror movie does. Because if he did, even if he didn't like it he would react more like wow they really drove the point home or something of that nature.
4:30 is the moment he realises...
he always gives a quarter note contrast to hang onto while they climb around
I always need a nap after listening to Meshuggah. Its like a mental workout to keep up with their odd timing.
Meshuggah means "crazy" in Yiddish (meshuga), like this drum performance by Tomas Haake! 🤘
He would probably like Catch 33 as it really takes you for an emotional ride. In death is life/in death is death takes you for a ride, assuming you have the patience.
He liked the guitar solo !? Should introduce songs from Catch33 to him, with that demented guitar tone. Or even "I"...
Meshuggah is a swedish band but their name is the Yiddish word for "crazy" ;-)
ObZen is just a mashup of Obscene and Zen Ob(scene)Zen
Obzen was the first he’d heard of Meshuggah??? Sheesh!
This is one of the most soothing songs i listen to lolol
You really have to listen to it a few times for it to start making sense
As a pianist he'd probably really appreciate a song like Dancers to a Discordant System
A band quite similar to this that came from the 90s was Fear Factory. Should check them out.
lol you could see him getting excausted by the time V3 hit
best album of this band
Sonata Arctica please! I believe Judson would like Power Metal. Also, Stratovarius, Epica, Helloween, etc etc
What’s the best Sonata Arctica song to start with?
@@Greatmeasures Sonata Arctica is great! To start with I would say Full Moon, Tallulah or Replica.
@@Owenator26 @Greatmeasures1 Absolutely! Full Moon is one of SA signature songs. Also, "The Power Of One" is one special song too :)
I absolutely agree: I like all the individual parts individually. What I don't like is that they repeat themselves obsessively, hammering your brain. If it only lasted 2 minutes it would be amazing.
I disagree. The repetitiveness and meditational feel are fundamental to what they are doing. They are, as the Zoomers say, "a vibe"
@@MaGariShun Obviously that's how it is. I certainly don't think they are repetitive due to lack of ideas. But still, it remains the feature that many find irritating. A nice idea repeated for too long becomes monotonous in other genres...In such a hardcore field the line is even more subtle because instead of monotonous, you risk becoming really annoying.
Repetition in other genres is bad, but in stuff like this repetitions only makes this better, more hypnotic and engaging, but you need to be in the mood for it
👍
Takes more than screaming and chugging the open E (tuned to B or A or whatever) string to be heavy.
Tigran Hamasyan - Levitation 21
Were you in "that's 70s show"? Cause you look like Eric
More meshuggah and discussion around the time signatures
gotta show him a Fredrik Thorendal guitar solo like in Rational Gaze, Perpetual Black Second or The Abysmal Eye
