  • Today is the last day to get TST limited edition vintage shirts!

    This 1973 Citroen SM is one of the coolest and most interesting vehicles ever made. In the pursuit of the ultimate GT car, Citroen created a stunning, 4-seat coupe body powered by a 3.0L Maserati V6 engine and suspended on a unique hydropneumatic self-leveling and height-adjustable "oil suspension," for unsurpassed ride quality before, and arguably since. This example has been owned by friend of TST Alex Roy for the past 9 years.
    This Citroen is now for sale on BringATrailer Auctions! Check it out here!

    45 years after it was built and it still looks like a car from the future.
    Stunningly Beautiful.
    Even more so with original European Spec Headlamp arrangement instead of that crap US spec design.

      The reason why the swivelling high-beams were banned in the US was because regulations at the time required all vehicles to have two or four round sealed-beam headlamps on fixed mounts, with no lens or other covering in front of them.
      But why was this regulation in place at the time?

    Take away that beautiful body and the engine/DRAVI steering system and, basically, what is left is a DS21. For those 'complaining' about the amount of power - get over it. It was not designed to a 'dragster'. And if your only concern is how fast you can go 0-60 (mph), just climb back into your collective cribs :). The SM was designed to be a long distance mover in supreme comfort - and they more than achieved that goal. At 120 mph it is far smoother than another car on the road today with the exception of maybe a V6 Cit XM or C6. The real 'innovation' with the SM was the steering system. Two turns lock to lock for an 88 degree swing of the front wheels. At rest one can turn the fronts with a finger. Yet, built into the design, is a piston and cam that increases the force needed to turn the wheels as speed increases.Additionally, just like the D series, one cannot move the front wheels from the outside of the car. IOW you hit a pot hole at speed in a corner - you feel nothing via the steering and the car just goes on its intended trajectory as though nothing happened. The other aspect is that removing ones hands from the steering wheel and the system returns to a straight ahead position. So they incorporated a 'locking' system so one can curb the wheels when needed. The downside of the system is about the only way you will notice a blowout is from the noise and smell.
    And for those 'worried' about performance - take any street with 'speed bumps' / pot holes / undulations and the SM/DS or any other of the hydropneumatic suspended Cits will fly by your most expensive race/sport car at speeds that will send a non hydraulic Cit into low orbit. One of the reasons the underpowered DS's were WRC year after year. Yes they will lean, but their actual road holding ability is legendary on anything but an absolutely smooth surface.
    I personally own an SM , along with two of the D models, an XM (only one of 50 in the US) as well as the diminutive 2CV. And have driven them, exclusively, since 1963. I get into any other car and my first reaction is, how did the roads deteriorate so quickly............

    Citroën was once a really great carmaker. Quality was not always their strongest point but they gave the world some very unique and iconic automobiles.

    • @sukhmaidickoff
      @sukhmaidickoff 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @Mondo - Yeah, and now they are basically only shit. You can´t even get Citroën with a hydropneumatic suspension anymore. That would be the only argument for me to buy a Citroën.

    • @sukhmaidickoff
      @sukhmaidickoff 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@jean-yvesmartin6934 Personally I would say that *NOTHING* comes even close to a hydropneumatic suspension. The feeling of floating over the ground like you do with a hydropneumatic suspension - in my opinion - can never be reached with regular coil springs. Sure, there are cars that have a nice comfort with coil springs too - but you won´t get the same floating-feeling. The only thing that comes near are air-suspensions like the ones i.e. Mercedes Benz makes (Airmatic). I am sure that some people might have other reasons as me to buy a Citroën - and to be honest I don´t know that much about the DS-brand - but to me it seems the DS-series covers a "niche"-customer segment, but then again - I could be wrong about that.
      I know this is many years ago, but in 1994 I bought a brand new Citroën ZX 1,8. Sadly enough I have to say that I have never had a car that bad before. I sold it after only 2 years and I cannot describe how many problems I had with the car during those 2 years. I sold it with a *BIG* economic loss. Hence I am VERY reluctant to buy a Citroën again - and I REALLY need some good reasons to buy a Citroën again - even though I know that 25 years have passed since then.
      The point with my comment is - that I think it was wrong of Citroën to move away from using hydropneumatic suspensions in some of their models. I don´t think I am the only person that considers this to be one of the main purchase-arguments to buy a Citroën.
      The DS-series has some untraditional design solutions - inside and outside - but to my knowledge - and from a technical point of view - it´s still basically a Citroën. In the long run I am not sure that this will be enough - but again - I could be wrong :-)

    Heavy car with 170 hp seems like it wouldn't be fast but this car's aerodynamics are so good it is actually an extremely fast autobahn cruiser - though acceleration isn't that impressive. Sounds incredible, I believe the Maserati V6 has an unusual firing order that makes it sound very good.

    I LOVE this car! I had a CX 2400 GTi which shared a few features. The brake 'button' you get used to once you realise it's pressure sensitive. The brakes are also anti-dive which feels weird but reassuring. The steering is self-centreing even when stationary. You can give it full lock at a standstill, let go of the wheel and it will spin back. The steering is very direct, but to counter that the self-centreing force increases massively with speed so it never feels nervous. The suspension despite being soft doesn't detract for it's cornering abilities unless you get seasick and it'll cock a rear wheel like a hot hatch if pushed and being able to raise it a few inches got me through some minor off-roading and deep snow. Seeing as I can't stretch to an SM, I'm off to look for a CX GTi Turbo 2..

    I have always loved and been fascinated with the car. It has a wonderfully Gallic nature, at a time when Citroen built cars that were unique and special. Thank you for the "One Take", enjoy these sorts of cars the most.
    Unfortunately the money being asked for them puts them out of reach of many enthusiasts like myself, or else I would have one parked in my garage right now. It heads my list of dream cars along with a Citroen DS 23 of the same era and 4.2 litre Series 1 E-Type FHC Jaguar.

    French cars really have something special in terms of character and this is the best of them quirks and all. I'm of the opinion it is beautiful.
    I always wished Citroen had done a deal with Maserati back between 2005 - 2012 when they were making the C6 and created a coupe version with the engine from the Quattroporte. Would have been an instant classic as I believe the C6 will be one day.

      Citroën was bankrupt in 1975, and owned by PSA (Peugeot), after this , the newer engines was all Peugeot...The own from Maserati in 1969 was one of the biggest mistakes from Citroën, because the V6 was complete misconcept pack, the other was the Wankel engine made with NSU (use in the NSU Ro80 and the Citroën GS birotor...

      The dilemma was always 205 GTi or GT Turbo. I went with the GTT because for not much money you could get 160-170hp. Wicked fun and less likely to leave the road backwards which was good considering the turbo lag. Traded that for an Alpine GTA Turbo which to this day is massively underrated. Got a custom Devil exhaust for mine which made it sound massively faster, and let you hear the turbo spooling up. >;)

  • @bruncebanani8854
    @bruncebanani8854 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    I love this thing. Well, I love many old citroens. The DS was a sensation, and the CX was great as well. These things feel soooo different to everything else on the road. And they were all packed full with innovations. Other cars of the day looked so outdated and oldfashioned, compared to them. My father drove a CX when I was a kid. Every single detail on this car was different to any other car on the market. And it's not just the feel, it's also the technical stuff behind it. The brakes didn't just use a servo to assist the driver, they used a completely different technical approach (which was superior, back in the day). Same goes for the power steering, same goes for the suspension, same goes for cockpit design. When you sit down in a CX for the first time, you won't find ANYTHING where you expect it to be. Even the inside door handles/releases were different (and actually: great). Citroens approaches were often genious, but somehow never established in the industry.
    Personally, I own an old Citroen XM. It isn't as special in all its details, as the older cars were. But it's still got a brilliant suspension which outclasses every affordable modern car BY MILES, when it comes to comfort.
    Unfortunatelly, Citroens Heydays are over now. A modern citroen doesn't look or feel much different to any other car on the market. Which is probably why sales numbers recently went up... unfortunatelly. The market doesn't seem to want any different cars. Nowadays, all the innovation takes place at Mercedes and BMW. Citroen has just become a cheaper alternative.
