Citroën SM: The Future, Half A Century Ago

  • The #Citroën SM has often been called "the Concorde for the road," and I believe that's a very fitting analogy.
Like the legendary supersonic jetliner, the Citroën SM was conceived in unrepeatable circumstances, a demonstration of technological supremacy that would sadly prove rather vain. The SM soon became a victim of the changing times, leaving enthusiasts wondering what could have been.
This video celebrates the #design and #history of one of the greatest automobiles France has ever built.

Ahhhhh.... SM. For many years, I had a 1972 US spec 3.0L carb 5 sp. My wife said "Never thought we could do 120MPH, while sitting in the living room "LOL. It joined a 1969 DS21 Pallas & a '68 DS21 Break.

Even I'm not a Citroën fan , i have to admit...the SM is a real Masterpiece in design and engineering...pitty Citroën lost his identity. I still remember the first time i see the car at the Brussels motorshow, ( 1971) , i was just 14 years old. Many many years later...itvstill bring back the memory of how i felt that day. Some cars never get theyre mage out of my brain. The SM is surely one of them.🤩

I'm convinced that one day, Citroen was THE brand to have! DS, GS, SM, even 2CV were cars that made us stop at the sidewalk and look at them. At least, every time I look for one of these brands, I cannot be indiferent to them. And the SM is one of them.

As much as I’m sad to see hydractive gone it still is very good to see Citroen return to their roots on comfort oriented cars. Lastly I think Citroen has to start a heritage program to supply spare parts for its past legends to keep them on the road for as long as ever possible

Wonderful video of a stupendous car.
I drove two Australian conversions to right hand drive here in Sydney.
A white 1973 EFI on my 21st birthday in 1974 and a deep iridescent blue 1972 that car club member Bruce Scott-Smith converted to RHD. Huge fun on a run down the Southern Highlands and fang through the Kiama Bends.
Love the comparison to the Concorde which also suffered with the rise in fuel prices.
I had the privilege on one London to New York Flight in July 1979 in 3 hrs 23 minutes and Mach 2.02 at 58,000 feet gazing into the deep indigo of space. Fabulous.

I believe 23 were converted to Right Hand Drive. 21 in Australia. Very complex job and reverse mould of dashboard was made. 2 Sydney Citroen Car Club members converted SMs. 4 of the earlier ones were done by a Sydney engineering works. The balance were brought in from the US to refurbished and some converted by Australian Racing Car Driver Peter McLeod. Some had glass over the fixed 4 US headlights.

the SM was not only excellent and innovative, but it was also (as we can see here) very videogenic. In "César et Rosalie" we see how Yves Montand's character develops from an uncouth businessman to something more sophisticated, while he dumps his Plymouth Fury 3 and gets an SM. And in "The Longest Yard" Burt Reynolds demolishes an SM, showing both how completely crazy he is, but also how (driven well) an SM can out-handle most other cars.

The Alfa Romeo dealer in Houston was also a Citroen dealer and I drove one of these SM back in 1972. The ride was superb and it was really a mid-engine in a front engine car with all the drive accessories being driven off of a front drive shaft to the accessories which were mounted on the front cross member. It was really superior engineering and futuristic styling for sure. It was not a fast car though by any means. But then the DS citrans were very, very slow. One spoke steering wheel was unique and 5 speed shifted well.

Although the SM is indeed one of the great Citroëns (it's on 3rd place in my list) I have always thought that it's backside is a bit heavy handed. I think it would have looked better if it would have ended closer behind the back wheels, probably at half the existing length. The SM has a reputation for being a maintenance nightmare, which it earned over the years in which second and third owners started cutting corners, ruining their cars. But if you can find a properly sorted SM, it doesn't have to be much worse than other classics. Some jobs do require quite a lot of man-hours though.

My dream car growing up ...however I've often thought the rear styling was a bridge too far for many people and could have been tweaked in much the same way as the DS , Renault 16 among others . I Always wanted to invert the rear light cluster and bumper so its upside down and higher on the car with license cut out underneath , and the way the rear passenger windows come together in an equal point was maybe not the best solution.
Now ironically Citroen and Maserati are back together in Stellantis , and to not become irrelevant Citroen will have to build at least one or two original cars that are not just rebodied Peugeots.

This is a dream made in metal.
My heart still beats faster when I see one; and it still looks stunning, different and current from almost any angle.
But... I am not sure it was killed by the oil crisis. Many thirstier cars with larger engines were not killed.
It was somehow too mad to live.
The strange, protectionist safety laws in the US didn't help. In fact they were very damaging... both aesthetically and ultimately in terms of sales...
But really, this car was an "amour fou" with wheels and an engine. By its nature it was too surreal and too beautiful to live.
It was (it still is) much better as a legend than as a practical motoring choice....
Great video about a car that still takes my breath away.
But a thought.... Back on the early 90s I read a long piece on 'Retroviseur' about a specialist who was tearing the Maserati V6 out and putting PSA turbodiesel on to make the cars usable every day.
It seemed like sacrilege, bit was apparently a lovely drive....
Now.... My possibly heretical thought .... Who will be the first to make an SM-EV?
It somehow seems fated that the car of the future will end up with the motor of the (immediate) future.

    • @Matteo_Licata
      @Matteo_Licata  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The oil crisis did not kill every gas guzzler, that's for sure. But it still is one of the main reasons the SM's career was cut short, as the crisis put Citroen in financial trouble, leading to the Peugeot takeover and the end of its Maserati ownership.
I wouldn't be against an EV conversion... Much better that than putting Diesel lumps into the cars, as it's been done in the past! In general, I think it's ok to convert to EV or otherwise modify a car that's in bad condition to begin with, as it brings it back on the road. On the other hand, good original cars should stay the way they are, I believe.

@@Matteo_Licata Okay, that makes sense. For me the best part of this car is undoubtedley the engine. The SM is far too heavy for 180 hp. Under 4000 revs, it is only moving. But if you rev it until 7000 or maybe short 7500 you get the noise of a battle plane. It´s absolut glorious. That´s the thing that make the SM really special. In comparison to the DS: The comfort is not quite well. For the top speed the suspension is too stiff, the cabin is hot in the summer because of the enormous rear window. The sitting position is to low for good visibility. You see absolut nothing in front of the wipers. A nightmare with this glass front in the city traffic. And the badest point: The steering. Rudolf Uhlenhaut, after taking apart a complete Citroen at Mercedes, loved the suspension ( thats the point forwhy he gave the 600, the "best car in world" the advanced Airswing from Borgward) but hated the absolut unsporty steering because the hydraulic assistance is completly blocked from the wheel side of the steering. No feeling of anything you had under your chassis. This and the "No go" of "heel and toe" use of brake and gas because of the "mushroom" killed any S- idea on the S- M. But the engineers didn´t sleep. After 28 years (1998) the XM(Y4) with a new absolut great V6 arrived in the "then old" XM with now 190 hp, hydroactive chassis and NO Diravi!! (before that the V6 came only with Diravi!) YES. This was the great swan song of one of our greatest brands in automobile history. Watch for a manual. It´s very rare but than you can feel and drive how a SM should be.
