We have spent many family vacations on that beach. I tested positive for COVID the day before we were to travel there in September. My case was light but I missed vacation to protect the family. Shalom Dr. Bagwell I enjoyed your teaching very much. Here is the Hebraic understanding of Amos when I studied this verse in Ivrit. Amos 4:13 "He who forms the mountains, creates the wind, and reveals His thoughts to man, He who turns dawn to darkness, and treads the high places of the earth-- YHVH Elohey (Elohim of )Tzivaot (Hosts of) is his name."
We will see here at the beginning of this verse, the understanding of the deeper Hebrew meaning, and its hidden nuances. “He who forms the mountains and creates the wind,” Here we will begin with the first part of this verse. Let us go deep into His word which gives us life. When you study His word, you have to ask yourself why are these words joined in this pattern, and then straight after He links them to “and reveals his thoughts to man.” Elohim does not communicate His words randomly; everything has meaning on many different layers and levels of understanding. So let us unravel the Hebraic meaning of Elohim's words given to us in this verse.
He who “forms” the mountains. The word “forms” Hebrew root word “Yatzar” is the same word we find Elohim forming man from the dust of the Earth which is found in Breshis Genesis 2:7 “Then YHVH Elohim “formed” a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.” Yatzar “forms” has significance in divine and human attributes. Depending on where the thoughts of man are based upon. When it is used in this secular way, man is seen as the clay and the potter Elohim. The ultimate goal is to transform the clay to form a beautiful vessel to carry the Glory of all Elohim’s attributes that a man can possibly hold. However, the clay does not conform to hold all of His Glory and chooses another form using its free will to rebel against Elohim.
Here “form” is attached to “the mountains”. The “mountains” “Har” in Hebrew refer to man’s pride and arrogance, rising above the earth in the domination of everything, except he is not able to dominate his rebellious self-will. Instead of man being humble and able to bend with the will of Elohim, he chooses a vessel that is high a “Mountain” which is the exact opposite of a valley. You could say symbolically the Mountain is an inverted cup unable to hold nothing, yet when it is reversed such as a valley for dams are built to encompass a depression, so is a cup which can hold much water, that being the Glory of Elohim. So being able to bend with His will is to be humble like a valley not as a mountain before Elohim. When one conforms to His will you are then a vessel able to communicate with Elohim and do the work that you are made for, to carry the message of Elohim to mankind, such as prophecy.
“He who forms the mountains “creates” the wind.” The word “creates” Hebrew root word “Bara” is the same word we find Elohim creating the universe in Breshis Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning Elohim “created” the heavens and the earth.” Elohim creates, we can only make from the given matter that Elohim has created in the beginning. The root “Bara” has the basic meaning "to create." It differs from “Yatzar” ‘to fashion’ in that the latter primarily emphasizes the shaping of an object while “Bara” ‘to create’, emphasizes the initiation of the object. So the beginning of mankind brings the emphasis that without Him who created us, we no longer need to be sustained by His creation. Therefore our initiation becomes the opposite, instead of life; we choose an ending, deconstruction, and death. The word here “wind” the Hebrew root word “Ruach” refers to the life he has given to man, air to breathe. As we do not take notice of our breath as we breathe which is every second of our life, so no thought by mankind is given to Him, who sustains all life on the entire Earth. Nevertheless, if we should skip just one breath, we are jolted, as all of our senses are switched on and panic seizes us to find our breath again. The wind “Ruach” is invisible yet it can be felt. Elohim is also hidden (invisible), but you can feel His presence encompassing all life surrounding us.
All this comes to a head when we read the next section “and “reveals” His thoughts to man”. The word “reveals” Hebrew root word “Nagad” which means tell, make known, ruler, or leader. So by revealing something that was previously unknown or unknowable to the person, Elohim offers the solution to be right with Him. The next word in this verse “and reveals His “thoughts” to man. The word “thoughts” Hebrew root word “Se’ach” the basic meaning of this verb seems to be "rehearse," "repent," or "go over a matter in one's mind." So Elohim brings to attention for man to “go over a matter in one's mind." This meditation or contemplation may be done either inwardly or outwardly and if done correctly man can repent and change his attitude towards Elohim which is the goal to strive for. To change one’s self is the most difficult thing to do because we hold on to our thoughts and our ways of doing things, instead of taking on His ways.
“He who turns dawn to darkness.” It is the light that brings the dawn. It is before the sun rises. Why is Elohim using this analogy here? Because when His light comes upon a person before it has time to shine from the rising sun, man rejects the coming light of the dawn being Elohim rising upon Him. In its full sense, man does not even wait to see the fullness of the sunrise, as he rejects Elohim at the beginning of the dawn, so much is man’s contempt of YHVH Elohim. So Elohim brings the darkness upon man, at dawn, because of rejection by man of the Light of Elohim.
The last stanza tells of the outcome of rejection of Elohim’s ways. “and ‘treads’ the high places of the earth.” The word ‘treads’ Hebrew root word “darak” which means to tread, bend, lead, way, or road. Here we see Elohim showing the road to life and for man also, to walk upon His road. Rejection of this road leads man to walk another road which leads to the destruction of oneself. The word “and treads the” high places” of the earth.” The word “high places” Hebrew root word “bama” has a basic meaning of "back," "ridge," or "height." also refers to a worship area. Also refers to the idiom of "treading on the heights" conveys the notion of possessing key terrain and thus signifies "being in firm control." To tread is a promise given to Israel over its enemies. The reverse of this is to be trampled and destroyed by YHVH Elohim over all of His enemies. So choose life and follow the road that our Messiah walks upon in humility.
I liked learning Amos 4:13 “…and declare the unto man what is his thought…” I suppose when we are desperate to know his thoughts, maybe we should read his word.

Great teaching Dr. Bagwell! Verse 12 is much different from verse 13. There are two personalities here, "I" who is God and "thee" which refers to Israel. "Prepare to meet thy God" is a sobering verse of Scripture. This is a message of judgment. "Do"/עָשָׂה/‛âśâh/to keep on doing it. God will whip His children when we don't obey Him. "Israel" means that these people belong to God. God is my prince. God is my boss. God is my governor, leader etc. God is saying that Israel is His. "Thus" refers to 750 to 721 B.C. when the Assyrian Empire attacks Israel. "Prepare"/כּוּן/kûn/get ready, it is going to happen. The context of this verse is that they are to prepare to meet God because He is going to judge them as He has never judged them before. God does not judge harshly until He has given a warning. Proverbs 29:1 He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy. God is warning America over and over again but we refuse to repent. Great point! "Prepare" & "Come" are worship words in the Old Testament. We go from judgment in verse 12 to a hymn of praise in verse 13. "Lo"/הִנֵּה/hinnêh/shows surprise. There are 5 verbs in this verse. Formeth, createth/בָּרָא/bârâ'/to make something out of nothing, declareth, maketh & treadeth. "Declareth"/נָגַד/nâgad/He expounds and exposits. "Thought"/שֵׂחַ/śêach/only time the word "thought" is used. It means to meditate. God takes the daylight and makes it pitch black. He will do this in the tribulation. "Treadeth" means to stomp. He will stomp on the devil's head one day. This verse starts and ends in a high place and in both instances God is in control. God is the master of His universe. "Hosts"/צְבָאָה/tsâbâ'/armies. Why is Amos giving a doxology and giving praise in the midst of judgment? Because God gets praised in judgment just as much as when He sends revival. Revelation is a book of warfare but it is filled with praise. God's judgments are true and righteous! AMEN! "If you are unrepentant, you will not be prepared to meet your God". Great statement! These two verses represent prophecy and praise. See Psalm 90:11. "Who hath known the power of thine anger?" Great study Dr. Bagwell! Thank you for taking the time to study, prepare and perform these great studies!
