I remember going to an Aardman film festival as a kid and seeing this, along with Pig and Pog, Wat's Pig, Rex The Runt, A Close Shave and a few advertisements. This, in particular, scared the shit out of me.
I loved this as a kid. Me and my old man would watch it repeatedly. Back in the day I found Jan Svankmajer's animations kinda disturbing though. th-cam.com/video/doQ7yE9Uw4k/w-d-xo.html
kinda seems like a bit of a cautionary tale, how they can climb through and separate themselves from the maze but still take the insecurities from it out on other people in the ‘new’ life
I wonder if that "E... F" statue thing is someone more anxious and awkward than himself, trying to make small talk. But he finds her annoying and makes her feel small? If not, then I'm out of ideas!
Thank you, but why not mentioning the author: Directed and animated by the amazing Richard Goleszosky. Absolutely brilliant. I have enjoyed this countless times since it came out on VHS in an Aardman compilation featuring "Creature Comfort" by Nick Park. Dystopian fer sure, but so funny and absurd yet psychologically astute & packed g with emotional intelligence. The soundtrack is fantastic.
I remember my mum had a VHS tape of cartoons etc. for us to watch before bed,, and this was on it. Unfortunately for me, this was one of my earliest memories and for a long time I thought it was a crazy fever dream I had. I still nearly tear up to this day. I fucking hate this and im pretty sure whoever made it has commited suicide by now living with the mind they have
I never saw this as a child but if I had it probably would of scarred me too, but seeing it now is really beautiful. The whole thing is a metaphor for identity and how we act and "put on a face" for different people that we interact with. In the end when he finally realizes that who he was pretending to be is not really who he is and he opens up and leaves his "bubble" which is the maze of life and opens his mind to the greater world around him. Thats my interpretation atleast
This peculiarity is one of those things that makes you go "What?!" and then you kind of figure it out, go "Aah, I see!" and then are still not sure whether you liked it or not, this is not gorgeous and uproariously funny - this is weird! It involves a group of grotesques talking to each other in gibberish - the central character being an odd looking pink thing apparently try to break free from a maze where he is forced to wear a mask ("Ident" is short for identity).
Can someone explain the ending with the creepy music?because I have no idea what it's suppose to mean...better yet the whole thing. Like does he have anxiety?

I never understood this as a kid but now as an adult I watch it and it makes sense.. Its basically you put on a different "face" for everyone you speak to... then if those people all arrive at the same time you don't know what part of your identity to show and up making an idiot of yourself xxx

"Chas has."
"Chas has?"
"Chas has."
"Chas has?"
"Chas has."
"Has he?"
"He has."

"What, Chas?"
"Woop!"
Yep, that's pub conversation all right.

This traumatized me as a child. Claymation still scares me but watching this again you see the deeper meaning haha.
Maryse Halliwell This did to me too! xD But yeah now that I'm older I see the meaning ;0
Maryse Halliwell Wait so does Pirates Band of Misfits and W&G scare you?? Like the very light hearted kids movies? Just curious :3
same here, I thought for ages it was just a crazy dream id had as a kid!
If you like disturbing claymation you should watch Dimensions of Dialogue by Jan Svankmajer.

i think it's about social anxiety
Damn I must of been a fucked up kid none of this type of animation scared me I was fascinated and needed more
This film is amazing, one of my favourites.
so this is what hell looks like
I didn't expect rex the rat to show up
Is there a moral in this surreal mess of a masterpiece?
***** Yeah I see that, kind of like the media telling us how "You're doing it wrong" and "This is bad".
only it didnt bring up the media at all
The name offers a clue. It seems to be to be about the imprisonment of identity in today’s world, or rather the illusion of it
kinda seems like a bit of a cautionary tale, how they can climb through and separate themselves from the maze but still take the insecurities from it out on other people in the ‘new’ life
The debut of Rex the Runt's predecessor.

i was freacked when i first saw this, but remembered it 6 years after. It's ashame that these have generally been forgotten
The actions we put up with on a daily basis and how they effect and alter us, and how we respond. I think it's about human nature~
It's been years since I saw these Aardman Classic animations on TV on Demand. To this day, they still scare me... 😓

IMDB says it's spelled Goleszowski and he goes by Richard Starzark? I'm pretty sure every single detail here was put there for a reason
one of my favorite shorts of all time

1:11 Weirdest scream in the Aardman universe.
A an animation starring clay sausage and the debut of Rex The Runt
I love watching this
2:25. I love the dot eyes! Just like Winnie the Pooh!
It's a shame. I should have checked my life insurance before watching this. It doesn't cover 'blown minds'

this was really funny the bit when he kept saying chase was hilarious
I think maybe in the end, he escapes the world of histrionics, and looks into his own mind. Then he starts to tear that apart too.
this Mickey Mouse clown
litterally the creepiest animation of all time. I’ve seen people die and it’s not as bad as this shit
Claymation and puppets are horrifically creepy
I want to watch this while i'm high one day. Even if it induces a psychotic breakdown...
this is so fucking amazing. Love it.

Did Noel Fielding have something to do with this?
Erm... Ok then. Can someone please tell me what they think this is about, because I have no idea.
+StpMtn 14 It means we are not our real selves when it comes to being social.
