I own defender 23.5MY and I can say the reliability is far better than Mercedes at least. Every single Mercedes had many minor issues during the first year after delivery which was always annoying. But my defender has no issue at all for 1.5 years. No idea about the long term but I’m really satisfied so far.
Honestly this the least informative video about the GX. Did you mention that you have the Overtrail? Did you discuss that the GX has variable suspension settings based on five drive modes? In Sport plus the GX suspension tightens up! Did you compare the very different four wheel drive systems of each vehicle? No. And finally the recall of Toyota engines in the tundra and Lexus LS does not include the GX. You needed to research that before giving reliability opinions. Not sure you did your homework on this.
@ If I missed the topics I mentioned in your video I apologize. If you discussed the topics I believe you missed, please provide the time stamps / links from the video where you did so. I would like to see what you said.
I agree with sam . The lexus is the land cruiser with a blazer on. I also prefer the look of defender . I think a better comparison would be the 4 runner vs defender with the 4cy or 6
For daily use, the Defender is much better choice. It drives pretty much like a car rather than truck but is still very capable offroad and still gives you that commanding seting position (what i am after in this type of SUV's). Also you can access it much more conveniently. If you have to often cary someone with mobility issues like me, forget about the GX or LandCruiser...seniors with mobility issues can't exit or enter it on their own, they need assistance each time and it is also stressful for them (now i talk about my own experience with my mother). I am currently driving Lexus RX but will be switching to Defender. To me, thay have absoultely nailed it with the Defender!
own the defender 4 years p400 hse no problem 50k miles drives like a roll royce so quiet , love lexus too but is not the same it is no good or bad is just okay
As a owner of a GX550 Overt-rail +, I would encourage everyone to test drive the GX then judge it! It’s one of the best Suv that you can get in the market! I found this video so unfair
Correct me if I am wrong, but I am pretty sure the Lexus offers off-road gauges on the infotainment screen, to access them you just have to be in the low-range/off-road modes, it shows stuff like pitch and roll, plus the multi-camera view for off-roading. I don't think you can go wrong with either, the Defender is the more street oriented vehicle cos it is unibody compared to the GX, but if you want that next step in off-road capability, the GX takes that just due to it being a truck underneath, I also appreciate the massaging seats that the GX offers, which is something you do not get in the Defender. If I were picking one it would definitely be the GX for me, I prefer its styling and "presence" more, but you can't go wrong with the Defender also
Thanks for doing this & i only partially agree! were you comparing the defender v8 against the gx? I believe the pricing in the US is >$100k with nicer interiors. I like the gx engine better compared to the regular engine of the defender and interiors at that price level are comparable.

The Defender looks better to you?I guess it's a subjective thing, but objectively the Lexus design is amazing, it looks muscular, crisp and oozes advanced technology and reliability.I would buy the GX in a heartbeat!
I’ve been noticing that throughout the automotive world. If 1 journalist or reviewer says a new performance sedan is too heavy, then the comments are gonna be about the vehicles weight and nothing else same as with a vehicle’s reliability and that’s before the vehicle is even released. Let’s not forget some years ago Fords were regarded and IN MY OWN OPINION still are trash and unreliable, but that hasn’t stopped anyone from buying them. Now watch all the Ford owners chime in about how reliable their car or truck has been over the years. I’ve owned a 2010 Lincoln MKS sedan ( Basically a Ford Taurus) for 2 years and that sh.. was an electrical nightmare. If we all listened to or really valued a reviewer’s opinion we’d all be driving Hondas and Toyotas since they’re the MOST RELIABLE vehicles in existence.
I've owned both a GX and currently have a 24 LR Defender 110. Both are Great but the Defender rides and feels more luxurious. I'm more than satisfied with the switch. One last thing it seems like Lexus and their owners look at Land Rover their owners as competition whereas LR and their owners don't consider Lexus as a threat. Just read the comments below 😂
Wait until you have to pay for new airbags on an old Defender, $$$$! Also, airbags need a compressor to pump the airbags. If you unknowingly have a slow leak, you'll wear out and break the compressor too... more repairs. This goes with any cars fitted with this system. Lexus is smart using tried and true mechanical suspensions.
Yeah, it’s a Euro, and Germany is in Europe. They encourage the taxi companies to buy European. In America, govt agencies can only buy American. Rental Car companies used to do likewise as did Taxis, but now they lean more toward foreign, Japanese makes in particular.
I don't know why anyone would take the Lexus over the Toyota. The big plastic front maw on the GX is hideous. The interior and exterior design and build quality is crude and cheap. It's also priced far beyond what it's worth. The Defender is sexy AF, but after owning two Range Rovers, never again. The answer to this comparison... the Land Cruiser. It's still a crude SUV, but it looks better and is a much more authentic and honest vehicle compared to the Lexus.
Just buy a car you like and enjoy! What is this long term Y’all talking about? You are not gonna live for ever! Plus if you can afford any of these beasts, you can very well afford the service costs 😀
The Defender king of what? School runs? Mom coffee? A fully loaded GX is less than a mid-tier Defender. You can’t compare it to the base spec - that’s apples and oranges. You spend A LOT of time on aesthetics and none on actual off-road performance. I guess this review has consistent criteria - luxury and suburban use cases that have a “rugged off-road feel.” I think “king” is a name that died long ago for the Defender. “Pavement Princess” is what most off-roaders call it. Ineos took away the man-card from JLR.
Even in the movie Cars 2, the lemon boss car was a Land Rover. They do make beautiful cars but never reliable cars. Lexus is way better overall and specially for longevity and value.
Can't live in the past forever. The new cars are just fine and I've had a few. No problems at all and less problematic than Mercedes, BMW and Audi's we've owned.
Toyota fans are like the plague. They hold on to this myth that they don’t break and they are the best in all categories wich is BS. They even go out of their way to go comment on other videos of Land Rovers even when no Toyota is being tested. The Defender is the better vehicle with way more options and even a 2 door version. So it’ll definitely be my pick.
It ain't a myth....just google for goodness sake and read every freaking reliability ranking in 15 diff languages, and they all say LR's are trash, and Lexus is tops. Period. It's not bluster, it's data, yo! Just read. I promise you even CHAT-GPT will agree!
I’m convinced no one in the comments have owned a JLR product. Look Lexus is known for reliability, but that’s it. The Defender FEELS AND LOOKS more luxurious. The drive quality as an off roader is also superior. I’m in a Mercedes currently but would still pick the JLR product
Obviously, you've never been on a GX forum? There are hundreds of them. Just Google before making such a nonsencical statement. Many of us on the Lexus fanbase of tried these pretty darlings. They're all look and empty headed. Also, just google four or five reliability ratings and after seeing LR's at the bottom of all five list, then heck yeah, us Lexus fans are gonna root for freaking reliability. Who wants to freaking heart palpations every time you head out for a cool trail ride, and have to wonder whether or not the $80k beast is even gonna crank? Cmon man. Complains about recovery points, followup scene pans around the front to show recovery points. Complains about Lexus plastic rear bumper cover being flimsy, proceeds to flex the plastic bumper cover on the defender. Complains about the $64,000 starting price of the Lexus but doesnt point out that the Defender hes testing is nearly twice as expensive. A fully loaded GX isnt even as expensive as a midrange Defender. A GX is far more likely to be used for its intended offroad design by its first or 2nd owner. A current gen Defender will not for obvious reasons. A defender is a very nice SUV to put around in while looking like you can go offroad where the GX is a offroad truck first with luxury tacked onto it. A throwback style of the 90s era of SUVs a lot of people still crave. While the Lexus has somr questionable elements like the aluminum clam shell hood and the ugly wart that covers the hitch receiver, everything else is solid. I'd prefer a V8 under the hood though.

Don't like the exposed screws in the Defender...
The hood shakes “ I agreed with that and it’s annoying .It seemed it was made of paper and not metal !!
I think the hood is aluminum instead of steel. I'm looking forward to see how Toyota deals with the gripes next year.
The engine is robust and reliable, just debris left inside could make stalled engine. Toyota will replace 110 l+ of those engines for new ones.
Obviously he did not do much searching.
Yea, just like how Toyota is denying people a new engine in their GR Yaris and Corolla because they are all going to blow up due to a mistake in production

The Lexus GX 550 is stunning 👍
If I were picking one it would definitely be the GX for me, I prefer its styling and "presence" more, but you can't go wrong with the Defender also
I test drove a Lexus once. And the flimsy door was the first and last thing I remember about why I didn't buy it.

Thanks for doing this & i only partially agree! were you comparing the defender v8 against the gx? I believe the pricing in the US is >$100k with nicer interiors. I like the gx engine better compared to the regular engine of the defender and interiors at that price level are comparable.

"Its gonna last forever" on Defender ? Common..
Wait until you have to pay for new airbags on an old Defender, $$$$! Also, airbags need a compressor to pump the airbags. If you unknowingly have a slow leak, you'll wear out and break the compressor too... more repairs. This goes with any cars fitted with this system. Lexus is smart using tried and true mechanical suspensions.

the choice of car is just a matter of preference, but man, the Defender looks more refined, despite being a capable off-roader! thanks a lot!
That back seat headroom is too close to the vehicle's top.

Just buy a car you like and enjoy! What is this long term Y’all talking about? You are not gonna live for ever! Plus if you can afford any of these beasts, you can very well afford the service costs 😀
That exactly my take!
