Make a Canned Herring Recipe on a Crostini
    canned HERRING ...also called KIPPERS
    thinly sliced and toasted BAGUETTE
    CREAM CHEESE
    RED ONION thinly sliced
MUSTARD (very optional...but I like it...as long as it's not hot dog mustard!)
    CAPERS
    fresh DILL
A good bread is the start of a great crostini.
Slice the bread thinly, so as to not overwhelm your toppings.
    Toast the bread lightly.
    Smear with cream cheese.
Add a dash of mustard, this is optional, but quite nice with herring.
Add a bit on thinly sliced red onion.
    Add capers and fresh dill.
Top with smoked herring ...either canned in oil or water, whatever you prefer.
Make a Healthy Salad with Kippers ...aka smoked herring
Place an assortment of mixed greens in a salad bowl. No need to dress the salad greens; the salad toppings will be enough.
Add sliced carrot, bell pepper, or celery for a nice crunch, and added nutrition.
Top the greens with a kippered herring filet.
Spread whipped or softened cream cheese over the kipper, add a dash of Dijon or stone ground mustard, if desired.
Top with chopped red onion, capers, and fresh dill...and serve.
Canned herring is such a quick, easy, and healthy snack or dinner option.
Try these canned kipper recipe ideas and let me know what you think...and bon appétit!

Just a tip to remember: When you are opening a can of sardines or herring etc, when you get to the very end with little of the lid still connected to the can just bend it back and fourth and it won't pop off and shoot juice everywhere. Try it! ;)

I grew up on this stuff, with mayo on bread (very glad that my tastes have become more sophisticated). Love your recipes here, I've done similar. One major thing both of you are missing on is Avocado---it is sublime paired against kippers. I commonly eat them together in salads, on crackers, etc. (Corn chip base, avocado, onion, kippers and pickled jalapeno is amazing.)

If I might suggest, my recipe for Tuna salad. It's how my mother and grandmother made it.
    - 2 hard boiled eggs
    - 4 cans of tuna
    - 6 heaping large spoons of mayonnaise
    - 2 heaping large spoons of sweet pickle relish
    - 1 pound of minced yellow or vidalia onion
    - 2 stalks of finely cut celery
    - salt and black pepper to taste
Additional mayonnaise may be added for a creamier consistency.
Alternatively, and just thinking about substitutions and additions; Kippered Herring instead of tuna, unflavored Greek yogurt in place of mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, celery salt and sea salt to taste.

Hey Buck, now we're talkin. Kippers are great. My first ship was an old oil tanker, the SS banner. I used to have a breakfast of kippers lightly sauteed with eggs and toast for breakfast every morning. For dessert, I would have canned purple plums. One day the messman told me to stop ordering the plums as the cans were all rusty and dented and I was the only one eating them and if I stopped the cheap cook would finally throw them overboard. I like canned fish in so many ways. One of my favorites s simply a spread with mayo and onions, parsley, celery, olives and lemon and spices. Your photography and plating of the fish was wonderful, very good job.

yeah...I used to be like that, too....my mom made salmon patties when I was a kid and I loved them, but I never made salmon patties from a can on my own until I was in my 20's and living out on my own; I remember the 1st time I bought a can of salmon and opened it myself....quite a horror show, visually...for years I used to remoev most of the bones and get rid of some of the skin...but now I just open up the can and dive right in...it's all good stuff...the canned herring isn't bad at all, but sometimes the canned salmon and and mackerel are a looooong way from placing in a beauty contest--but they're great ingredients--they just need a makeover in the kitchen :^)

I love canned fish, smoked herring is one of my fav. In oil only, of course, no tomato suace!
One tip i know is to wash the outside of the can thoroughly before opening (even the ones wrapped in plastic). Sometimes bacteria is on the outside of the can and when u open it can contact the oil and contaminate the can.

I like the idea of mixing all those ingredients up in a bowl and schmearing it on some saltines with a dose of hot sauce maybe, or squeeze of lemon.
    But that looks awesome!
I'm a huge fan of creamed herring but the stuff is expensive these days, especially the better brands.

I'm experimenting with canned fish this week. I got a couple flavors of herring ... smoked oysters. I think I got 1 can of sardines too. Thank you for the fun video and the inspiration

Chef Buck. if you put the capers on the cream cheese, they should stick and not roll off.

I really want to try to experiment more with canned fish. Can you make more videos like this including how to overcome how horrifying the fish looks when you first open the can? Haha!
But really! I'm interested in more videos like this!

    These "Capers"
    Are they sour pickled?
I *THINK* I had some in japan! 🤔
And I'm not sure if they are like little pickles!
Can someone please answer my question. Thank you.

A little stronger than tuna is actually very helpful. I was wondering how they stacked up in the fishiness category.

There's only one thing I won't do... I always buy my canned fish in Water - Never Oil... another thing... I make sure it's a product of Canada or the USA - Never from China... I'm OCD about GMOs and polluted water...
On the other hand... I love the ingredients you use... I also love Capers in my fish concoctions... I love Alaska smoked Salmon and buy as much as I can when it's on sale. Oh! I never buy fish packed in tomato sauce or any sauce, for that matter... Gaud knows what's in it... The problem, here in Canada is, we have to pay USA prices for fish products... even Canadian fish... O-well...
Anyway, it's an excellent video. Glad I watched it :-)

we buy the fish packed in water, too ...picked up some packed in oil for the purposes of the video--it was tasty, but the water-packed fish is just as good, and the added oil is avoided, and it's much less mess to fool with. Capers with the smoked herring is a must, I think. I love getting lox and bagel when we go out fro breakfast--the cream cheese, capers, and fresh red onion really make it-- but it's getting harder and harder to find a good version of lox and bagel...and it can be so pricey, plus a bagel is just way too much bread...I've really been appreciating herring on a crostini...tastes great 'cause it's not so bread-ee, and much cheaper than smoked salmon. Sometimes we'll add kalamata olives to a herring salad as well, adds great flavor like the capers, but you can add more without it overpowering the salad

    • @DStrayCat69

Yes... very pricey... I used to take Bagels and Lox, to work, for lunch :-) Most of my co-workers had no idea what a Caper was... lol I worked with a lot of Asian people who freaked when they tasted one. They loved them... I don't know if Sliced Salmon is available in the USA, but I buy it as often as possible, here in Canada. Alternatively, I buy filleted Salmon and slice it myself... Much cheaper. Gotta have a razor sharp filleting knife...
