WARSHIP DESTROYER INTERCEPTS FISHING BOAT

- VICTORIA AUSTRALIA. Running out to sea on a public (unrestricted) course we've traversed 100's of times before we suddenly get intercepted by WARSHIP HOBART that is passing by and told to leave the area. This is a common daily route for all recreational and local commercial vessels. When we pulled up we were still approx 2km from the ship. We love our Navy and was Awesome experience to see that ship up close. We are in peace time here, she's all right mate. Straya.

my cousin got met face to face with a US submarine. they had a whole conversation. the thing popped right our next to em
I forget which exact submarine it was by name (first U.S. SSN to circumnavigate the globe) but it was "supposed" to go undetected and, at one point, they raise periscope somewhere in the South Pacific and there's a Polynesian fisherman in a little outrigger canoe staring right back at them. Dying of curiosity, they had investigators search regional islands to find the man in the months following the voyage and were actually able to find their "needle in a haystack." The Polynesian fisherman had apparently thought the periscope was the eye of some great sea monster and had painted his canoe with all manner of positive spiritual incantations after.

Things to do to not look suspicious when a Navy Destroyer is nearby:
Don’t have a ladder on your boat that is visible from the destroyer. (Optional but i’d do it.)
Don’t drive your boat straight to the Destroyer (Common sense but needs to be pointed out.)
Don’t leave the guy on the radio on hold. Respond and comply.
Just keep distance, take your photos, wave goodbye, and drive away.

In the 70’s my grandfather has a 38’ sailing boat and was preparing for a world cruise. Part of the prep was learning using a light for code. One night he came across a military ship and he flashed them a code, he got a return message that when anyone flashes a code the captain has to be made aware and he was sleeping so stop it. Lol
I really hope this is true.
I don’t know verbatim what was said but that was the best I could recall it. I have no reason to doubt him. He was a character though. He loved the sea. He was a ham radio operator licensed by the fcc and mastered coding. I never saw him use the lamp but he had on on his boat. He never made his world cruise. But he did sail to Acapulco from Los Angeles and back. He passed away in 2007 at the age of 91. I hadn’t thought of this all in so long it brings back so many memories. Him and his greek captain’s hat he wore only when he went to the harbor. Then just like how mr Rogers would change his shoes, when he worked on his boat he would change his hat to a green tam o shanter. I never asked why but just accepted it like it was something he did. Lol

This happened to us when sailing back from Tassie to Sydney. Told to keep motoring and we were boarded by 3 guys with guns etc. asked if we were carrying any narcotics and, being a nurse, I admitted to the 5 amps Morphine and 1 packet OxyContin that were kept in the first aid kit. My father, brother and myself were on board and looked like the most unlikely of drug smugglers. However, it was unnerving being filmed by those in the boarding vessel and also on the Navy ship. Pleasant conversation for a couple of minutes but they declined a cuppa. Thanks Oz Navy; glad to know you are out there.

@@FastDuDeJiunn If you are getting warned away from an area it is likely some sort of military training exercise. Last thing you want to do is sail *toward* whatever the navy is shooting at.
I would ask where is the fastest way i can get out of the restricted waters or whatever.
Depending on what the ships have onboard and the mission they are engaged in they sometimes extend their Maritime exclusion zone outwards in a 360 from their ship. Closing in on that zone will cause the ship to depend on mission and various reactions according to the current ROE. This is sometimes as high as destructive fire.
There was a notice to mariners given by this ship on civilian channels listing what those zones are and how far from the ship you must remain.

When you enter international waters (12nm from the coast), you are required by law to read all maritime notices. These can include warnings and hazards. They can also include prohibited or restricted areas for military exercises. You have a maritime licence, I suggest you educate yourself before your next voyage!

The most exciting thing that happened on that warship in long damn time
I have had this happen a few times while sailing. Most of the time they are just checking up on you. Sometimes they just want to hassle you guys to pass the time away. But if they want you to do something you do it. Guess what, they have the bigger guns and in international waters they have the power. Oh and the exclusion zone that they are referring to is the safety zone around the naval vessel. I usually get on 16 and state my intentions so that there are no hard feelings. On one particular time I was invited on board and given supplies. Great people if you treat them with respect you will generally get respect.
