I think it comes down to the progression of weaponry. For a while, canons were the main offensive tool for ship combat. Bigger guns could shoot farther and do more damage, so bigger ships were better because they could hold more and bigger guns. Then torpedos and aircraft carriers were invented. Aircraft had significantly longer range than a battleship's main guns, so battleships became inferior to carriers. Fundementally it's about range. Rock -> club -> spear -> bow -> gun -> canon -> missile.
If railguns become feasible, battleships will come back very quickly. The defenses on most warships are there to prevent them from getting hit, and it is /really/ hard to stop a shell from landing. Also, tungsten darts are likely /much/ cheaper than cruise missiles.
Also, smart ammo (basically tracking bullets) are starting to be used on guns, they act the same as missiles but at a somewhat shorter range, cheaper, and can’t be countered currently. These both combined could result in battleship or monitor type vessels reoccurring
If rail guns were to become practical it wouldn't bring back the Battleship unless you also end up with massive armor protection on the ship as well and this is unlikely due to the importance of speed. Historically ships with high caliber guns but without armor were called Battle Cruisers (though the term was lose) In reality your likely to just see such a single such weapon integrated onto modern cruisers replacing the existing deck gun and it would be arguable if this would even rise to the level of a new class, particularly if it becomes part of the existing weapon mix on the cruiser rather then something the whole ship is built around.

One correction I have to make: Aircraft carriers traditionally used to have diesel engines. This, however, does not mean they would run on diesel fuel. In fact, the diesel engine is named after the Diesel cycle, as invented by Rudolf Diesel, and the fuel after the engine. Diesel engines can run on a variety of different fuels. Most marine diesel engines use heavy fuel oil, which is way cheaper than diesel.
Most civilian ships run on HFO, since it it cheaper, and the technology have been around since the late 1960s for the diesel cycle engines. Military tends to have different priorities, like usability, stability and inter-usage between ship types. The HFO (or FFO-Furnace Fuel Oil) was used during the switch over period from coal to oil, and used for steam boilers. Ships equipped with diesel engines and gasturbines were (and are) using a diesel fuel oil, in shipping also known as a MGO (Marine Gas-oil). The standard for this is Nato Fuel F76. So he is correct by saying that the ships are using diesel fuel.

Could upgrade 2 battleships to be just as capable for modern technology. That and older destroyers could be updated as well saving so much more money. Yes I get the Zumwalt has stealth features. But has it been tested in combat? That much money would make it too pricy for harsh testing.
Maneuverability for them is slow. Too costly for their size. Destroyer only cost little but it could destroy a battleship twice the cost as that destroyer. They could be use for beach assault or something but those roles were replaced by warships with better capability (aircraft carrier, missile destroyers, amphibious Assault ship, missile submarines, etc) there really isn't any technology that could let you build a powerful battleships this days. If you're telling them to replace the main guns with missile, It would be an easy target due to its massive size. They can be torpedoed away by some submarines which would just waste all of the missiles in that battleship. Mostly these days, nations prefer a small yet powerful offensive force like destroyer, rather than a big battleship with great armor with powerful guns. Battleships are obsolete this days. The example is battleship Yamato which just got sunk by a bunch of torpedo bombers. If you want to build a powerful weapon it must be cost effective one.

@@sjoperdjetbh I think it’s more a size thing, as you can fit out a destroyer to be better at air defence or better at anti submarine warfare The classes are just the weight and even those are blurred, not much difference between a big frigate and a small destroyer
@@sjoperdjedifferent ships definitely have different applications! i haven't seen the video yet so i don't know if he goes over this particular type of ship, but minesweepers use wooden hulls because many mines use electromagnetic detection as a catalyst for detonation. this wouldn't work for carriers, the largest type of ship, because they need large amounts of space for hangar bays and launch zones. and that large of a ship wouldn't work for a destroyer, because it would make the vessel too large of a target. the size of the ship as well as the weapons aboard work in conjunction to determine the class of the vessel. a boomer and a fast attacker are both submarines, but they serve totally different purposes. the navy tried to introduce more modular weapons systems with the LCS (Littoral Combat Ship) vessels, but modularizing the systems honestly just complicates them and introduces excessive staging that isn't necessary when all systems work together as one. In post-conflict analysis after WW2, the Navy brass realized all they had used their Battleships for, was to support the Marines and Army landing on enemy shores. The real fighting at sea had been carried out (pun) by Aircraft Carriers.
Yeah but keep in mind the iowa had missile countermeasures added in the refit in the 80's so, its still a massive target, but it can defend itself to an extent.
Fun fact: I was on the ship at 0:50 seconds furthest left. I remember being on the upper deck when this was being filmed and it looked like something from a film

One thing I've never understood is why there isn't a dedicated missile ship, especially in carrier strike groups? I know Arleigh Burke destroyers have 90 SM-6 missiles each, but that isn't very much when sailing through contested waters like the South Chinese Sea. There is no limit to how many missiles that can be shot from land at our carrier group. Why isn't there a cargo ship like the HMM Algeciras outfitted with 100,000 Sm 6 missiles ready for defense?
My last year of high school my shop teacher had his brother, who worked for Lockheed Martin, do a class presentation for us. Although, the presentation was supposed to be about how he was hand building a canoe in his recent retirement and the wood working skills he used, it turned to his line of work prior. he had a part in the development of littoral combat ships and he told us how when they launched the first one and it took off it's wake washed all the civilian boats out of the way. Honestly a fascinating and fun story.
It's interesting how a lot of classes converged on destroyer-sized vessels with largely similar capabilities. It could be that in the future any classification other destroyers, subs and carriers is obsolete.
it might be largely obsolete, but not completely obsolete. You need to pass a certain size to be able to conduct deep sea operations. So something like a torpedo boat or small corvette would still never be considered a destroyer even if powerfully armed - simply because a torpedo boat or small corvette would have a hard time against the ocean.
I remember hearing about a situation where as a ship was about to capsize, the ships captain ordered the entire crew to stand at the opposite side, turning it upright. That just goes to show how many people are in the ship, that them on their own can actually act as a counterweight to the ship itself
Navy types call that a trim party when at sea, won't comment what they call a trim party ashore as this is a family type ..., a fuck it lol a girl in every port and a port in every girl
Man, I hoped amphibious assault ships would drive on land like a Bagger 3000 Or imagine it walking with giant spider legs like the Cybran walking ships
As a Marine, I’m sure having that instantaneous artillery support from battleships would have been nice. Dropping 16 inch naval shells might not be effective against air, but it’s definitely effective against infantry or armor. The Navy also has to support us marines and our amphibious assault.
I mean its hard to calculate artillery strikes and not hit your people trying to compensate for the curvature and rotation of the earth. And then battleships doing that plus compensating for sway just sounds anxiety inducing for whom ever made the calculations back in the days pretty much they would just eyeball in the oldschool times and be like shoot anything with trees.
@@AngelA-mk5ty Jason... we have what is called ship gun fire-control systems. They used to be mechanical calculators that you use dials to operate with. Nowadays it's electronics, but the concept has been fully well-known for a long, long time before you were even born.
I'll be honest, decently fast firing, high caliber high explosive shells sounds better then an expensive missile that could be used for other targets farther in-land
Its mostly cost that prohibits battleships from being used- That and flexibility. Battleships are intended as water superiority ships, but Aircraft carriers are superior at that. I understand the desire for battleship artillery, but using aircraft for close support is usually going to be more effective, from both a cost and accuracy standpoint.
I never thought about that but I'm sure knowing there was a moving city covered in guns watching over you and your buddies would have been a reassuring thought.
The term 'cruiser' comes from the Dutch term 'kruiser' meaning 'crosser'. It was invented to bring the firepower of a battleship, but with much higher speeds to 'cross' enemy ships at sea, meaning to intercept them. About the frigates, there can be air defense frigates too. Most frigates have decent anti air capabilities. The littoral combat ships are discontinued. There are more categories. Logistic ships like tankers and tugs for example.
@Bob Shingles no, they are named that way because they are cruising long distances. They go relatively slow (compared to short range missiles) but have an enormous range. As in: more then 500km. They are (mostly) GPS guided, as it is impossible to have a target on radar, support the weapon with uplink, or have the risk of the weapon going for the wrong target (as you are blind on that range). They don't have to be big, a tomohawk can be shot from a standard VLS system (fitted on frigates and destroyers). They are somewhat the same size as a SM2 which is a short/medium range force defense missile.
I have to say, I was thinking about doing a document trying to distinguish between ships like cruisers and destroyers. I was thinking about doing some more detail for mine, but I think you did a great job at making sense between it all. And thanks for not using ships designations as a weight class. Kinda drives me batty nowadays when people do that.
I am happy to see that i was not the only one confused about the differences between Frigates, Cruisers, Destroyers, and Corvettes. And I am also happy to know that it is as confusing as it seems and I am not just losing my mind trying to distinguish between them all. This video did clear a lot up. Great work.
Torpedo boat 'destoryers' learning of the origin for the name makes me think of stellaris. A common tactic in that game is to build pretty much entire armadas of torpedo and missile corvettes, one of the only ways to defend against it is to have a screen of a few dozen destoyers covered head to toe with anti-torpedo and missile weapons. They wont win any fights but they'll make sure the corvettes cant wipe half your fleet in the opening volley.
Didn't they nerf the torpedo corvette strategy pretty hard? Gotta say, it was absolutely hilarious. The AI had not a single clue how to deal with torpedo corvette swarms and it gave me a good chuckle every time.
@@thegamesforreal1673 I haven't heard of any nerfs to it, that's one of the big reasons NSC2 is so popular because it really diversifies what's in your fleet and makes capital ships worth more than they currently are.
@@spikem5950 theyve changed the combat system, they got rid of torpedo corvettes and invented a whole new ship type for that role, frigate. Frigates are now armed with missiles (and neutron launchers go into the guided weapons slot too) and missiles have bonus damages against bigger ships (the bigger the ship, the bigger the damage). but all in all, frigates still suck, dont live long enough to make a dent. Missile cruisers, however, have a new life now, effective all-purpose vessels.

@@ColoradoStreaming I think they're giving Destroyers and/or most cruisers depth charges, giving subs low hp, and giving subs oxygen requirements where they'll need to resurface once in a while, limiting super stealth shenanigans.
Modern surface combatant classifications are almost entirely arbitrary. The Arleigh Burke class destroyer has the same displacement as the Ticonderoga class cruiser, and the Zumwalt class destroyer is so massive that it rivals the tonnage of smaller battleships. The days of destroyers being small escort ships are long over. They're now the main surface combatants of most modern navies.
Quite true, some reporting for the Canadian Type 26 frigate at full load will be 9400 tons about the same as the Burkes and Muscova. For Canada it will be more a general purpose ship with a proposed sensor array nearly as good or even better than some of the supposed larger types.
Classifications of ships differ from country to country, and from year to year. Even within Britain's Royal Navy, for example, the rules for classifying a ship as one class or another changed every time a new set of admirals sat on the panel of advisors who determined such things, or the same guys might change their minds from one year to the next and re-write their rules. Another example is Britain's Leander class frigate, which was classified as a "destroyer escort" when purchased by Australia.
From what I understand: Destroyer : Jack of all threat, meant to take on any threat and dominate, but lacking in facilities such as commanding, intelligence, electronic warfare, medical. Frigate : A cheaper Destroyer, used to patrol friendly or enemy shores ( think Coastguard ships ) and offering support to ground troops, launching assault vehicle, boats, helicopters etc. Cruiser : Well equipped to command Destroyers and operational theater with it's facilities, to conduct better intelligence, electronic warfare, etc. Corvette: Bigger patrol boats, used to skirmish against ships near your shores and water.
@Esperantrul Tristam I would say the Battleships were the moving fortress and the Aircraft Carrier the a mobile airport. Doesn't make sense to put position such a " soldiers, general, king, queen, knight " to modern equipment. It's too generic and doesn't represent the reality.
@@kenshinyamamoto5855 it's often better to be a jack of all trade and a master of none than a being a master of one but being incompetent in everything else. I’m honestly sad Battleships were decommissioning. They look so amazingly bad ass with their big ass cannons.
So because they LOOK good yet have been outdated since the early 40s you're sad? Thank God you're not in charge of your country's military budget
@@chiarosuburekeni9325 LeTs SpEnD 22.5 BiLlIoN oN oNe BoAt. That fucking wasn’t worth the cost. Why can’t Battleships be upgraded, instead scrapped or retired as a museum of historic engineering. I understand that they were outdated but they can always be updated instead of left behind. I can guarantee you half the budget of the Zumwalt destroyer’s construction.
@@Jedssski Well battleships still pack a massive punch they could be redesigned to be naval mobile artillery because some nations have missile defense systems that can render certain missile destroyers useless
@@warnpeace5294 they could be, but as I said they lack mobility... If there is a technology where the battleship could be faster.. yes it could useful. but as of now it isn't nowhere as useful as modern cruisers. The battleship could even be a thing of the past tho

@@sjoperdje exactly.
Subs OP they need a nerf
@@sjoperdjetbh I think it’s more a size thing, as you can fit out a destroyer to be better at air defence or better at anti submarine warfare
The classes are just the weight and even those are blurred, not much difference between a big frigate and a small destroyer
Source: am FT1
sadly, battleships just became large targets with no real long range attack systems.
They were still good ships, the main reason they stopped using them was the cost compared to effectiveness.
In post-conflict analysis after WW2, the Navy brass realized all they had used their Battleships for, was to support the Marines and Army landing on enemy shores. The real fighting at sea had been carried out (pun) by Aircraft Carriers.

Fibre glass and rawhide...
Then it died in the water en route to its first destination
It's interesting how a lot of classes converged on destroyer-sized vessels with largely similar capabilities. It could be that in the future any classification other destroyers, subs and carriers is obsolete.
it might be largely obsolete, but not completely obsolete. You need to pass a certain size to be able to conduct deep sea operations. So something like a torpedo boat or small corvette would still never be considered a destroyer even if powerfully armed - simply because a torpedo boat or small corvette would have a hard time against the ocean.
Still need something to carry the marines
And amphibious assault.
Wrong destroyers still have to be somewhat maneuverable l, so cruisers would still have to be big enough to hold missiles at least for the US.
I remember hearing about a situation where as a ship was about to capsize, the ships captain ordered the entire crew to stand at the opposite side, turning it upright.

Fun fact, in Russia larger submarines are normally referred to as cruisers.
@@tylerjohn4607 In motha Russia , everything is possible
The term 'cruiser' comes from the Dutch term 'kruiser' meaning 'crosser'. It was invented to bring the firepower of a battleship, but with much higher speeds to 'cross' enemy ships at sea, meaning to intercept them.
About the frigates, there can be air defense frigates too. Most frigates have decent anti air capabilities.
The littoral combat ships are discontinued.
There are more categories. Logistic ships like tankers and tugs for example.
not to mention the different types of gunboats and landing craft that come in all shapes, purposes, and sizes
So you're saying that "cruisers" are actually "interceptors"? Way better name.
@@melanoc3tusii205 yes, well, even better specified: battlegroup / carrier group interceptors :) Nowadays they are obsolete, sadly. They look epic!
I like how it aligns perfectly with what I learned from Supreme Commander.
I have to say, I was thinking about doing a document trying to distinguish between ships like cruisers and destroyers. I was thinking about doing some more detail for mine, but I think you did a great job at making sense between it all.

Stellaris is basically the entire reason I started getting into learning about naval combat and ship types.
Yes! That is the exact same role as to what the torpedo boat destroyers did served back in the day of late Victorian fleets.

From what I understand:
Destroyer : Jack of all threat, meant to take on any threat and dominate, but lacking in facilities such as commanding, intelligence, electronic warfare, medical.
