I have had the privilege of shooting NYFW for a few years as well. It can be very challenging and rewarding all at the same time. I recognized a lot of faces from the pit. I remember we would try (sometimes beg) to ask the house to turn on the lights how they will be for the show run so we could make our adjustments in our exposure. Sometimes they did...most times...you had to be able to work on the fly. I remember the guys in the pit would be sharing setting with each other. Had some fun times while shooting NYFW. The video was accurate and informative.
I've shot a few years for NYFW...a lot of those guys in the pit of this video I've had the pleasure of getting to know. Runway photography can be extremely stressful and chaotic based on a lot of the things Nigel already highlighted, however its very rewarding and fun if your up to it. In addition, I'd say if one does decide or get the opportunity to shoot at NYFW, take care of yourself meaning hydration, food (light snacks mostly), and rest when you can if you get there before the show starts and you don't have backstage passes. I've seen folks pass out, or cramp up from standing long periods of time. Like a fellow runway photographer told me when I first started, your job as a photographer is to capture the show....not become a part of it :-)

Thanks for this I've got at least 3 opportunities to shoot at london and paris fashion and week shows, these tips are useful the first one is friday which is an evening time. I'm coming in from a different angle but i'm confident I can capture some great shots. Nervous as its my first time especially with moving subjects but hopefully i can shoot stationary models backstage I trust my creative instincts and I know I can bring somethinh unique even with my nikon d3200 - 18-55mm which isnt the fanciest but has got me great results over!

I am doing my first fashion week in New Orleans. We are a bit famous for tiny spaces. The one last night was plagued with all kind of lighting issues and the like. I managed to get some great shots. I actual opted for the angle space due to how tight the space was. It fitted my style a bit more in the end. The other 3 photographers were falling off chairs and stuff trying to not hit each other lol.

FOOD Nerd how did the 85 work out? I would have rented a zoom I think but I know nothing about this type of photography. Congrats though!

took the best pictures from the side :))) the center ones are quite boring most of the times, but from the side you get a new perspective and you can even get a couple creative shots
How does one get into these shows as a photographer? And how does a photographer shooting these events get paid?
got to get in first..... pay comes second
Work for free or chicken feed until someone decides you are worthy of being paid real wages. That's how it was back in the day, you had to get good at what you do and prove yourself you are up to the job first.
What would be a good Nikon body for catwalk & fashion....Any one ?

I never shoot fashion shows in raw takes up to much space on card
I always do
JPEG on a full frame camera, raw definitely if using a small sensor camera
I always shoot raw+JPEG for everything, ever since Seattle Fashion Week in 2015.
