Something important to note if your gonna do this yourself and go the route of using a dremel around the edges to make it sit flush against the housing, the eBay lens is oversized for that, and it will require a lot of trimming the edges and sanding it flush, as well as adding in some valleys for where the 2 middle sections go through.
not sure how i missed this video but unpopular opinion i love this i like the startec look over the mhw but i prefer late model e30’s and have a 325is myself so i think ill do this great video ill let you know how it goes
After watching this several time I gotta say thanks Frank for the clear instructions and attention to detail. Im about to start two sets of prefacelift one (for my own s62 tech 1 sports) and gotta ask. Where did you find the paint codes required to get the job done? I suppose it's not long enough yet , but how did the seal hold up against moisture. Looks great
Nope an oven won’t work in this case. There are too many interfaces that prevent the oven from doing its job. Early model tails - yep, but not late model
done this by myself also, with same lenses. the problem and mistake here is that when you paint the reflectors of each sector of taillight they need to be not shiny, but matte. Because in direct sunlight, and also on your video, the reflection ruins a little bit of the view. And also noticeable when on car.
It doesn't look like an MHD taillight at all, you should've went for the smoked lenses, or better yet - clear ones and tint them yourself if you were going for the MHW look. This "salmon" color is the pre-facelift Startec tail lights color.
No no that's alright. seems to be the consensus. But it's here for anyone willing to do it. Like I said at the end of the video, i'm glad I got myself a set of OEM new lenses ;)

Nice work Frank. I think I prefer the oem look. But that's just my 2cents. On the other hand they do look pretty good on the car.
That's exactly why I bought a spare set. I wasn't 100% myself, but the video was for education for people who wanted to try!
Wow good work, but the OEM still looks better
The oem taillights?
Always great information! Thanks for the video ! Super cool.
Ahhhhh como rayos rompes una mica oem… por Dios que sacrilegio, seguro había otra forma de hacerlo… no pude terminar de ver el video…

Thanks man!!
Paint codes for these cars are easily googleable!
You could’ve shared it 😅 oh well…
Looks fantastic 👍
well done. what does MHW stand for?
Where ro find those lenses??
Looks very nice!! Would your oven make a good split from the front and the back of the housing? Other than that, thanks for another great vid!

also i have used salmon color lenses but used light layer of black clearcoat from inside to make it look black. pm if pictures needed
It’s more than that. I needed to paint the backside of the lenses tint as well
@@Garageaholic yup, you can always do that since you used soft glue ;)
Great work 👏👏👏
Help me a lot.

Hi, great video.

Tq

@@Garageaholic hello sir.
I have checked your description before asked you, those links went missing unfortunately.
Can you poste the Link from eBay for the glases? Thank you
From where i can get them ?
Van someone show ne the link from eBay for the smoked lights?
Sorry, the link expired. Just eBay “e30 tail lenses” and they should show up.
Original looks better
why didn't the reflector work?
I'm actually not sure. Something in the mold of the lense that apparently went missing.
@@Garageaholic good to know! not a mod for me yet, then!
look who it is
@@cl5769 hai it me
2200 for a set of tail lights. geesh... and my vw community is already bitching about 250 for a pair lol
Yeah, I see a set on ebay right now "E30 MHW". $2200

Watch the end. This is exactly what he says
exactly. After I finished it, i realized that it still needed tweaks, but even still just wasn't exactly what I wanted out of a taillight.
Gkchh
Шляпа полная.
Original looks better, sorry. All that hard work.

@@Garageaholic it was a brave video, well done anyway.
