my side collection was/is Andrelton Simmons. I really enjoeyed watching him play when he was with the Braves and think he was a fantastic shortstop back then. I got a nice rainbow collection of his rookies (Bowman and Panini Prizm). Nice video, cheers
LEARN BEFORE YOU BUY IS A BIG ONE! First got back into it and I was buying stacks of rookie star RBs and WRs at shops for $3 each card thinking id sell them on ebay for more than i bought them... Still regretting it
Appreciate u putting Arenado on the picture. That really hurt man. Anyone buying cards right now has money to burn. Best to remember anything purchased today will be worth less tomorrow. Winter is coming.
Good list for many of us who have recalibrating our collecting and spending on sports cards. Also, if you aren't regularly selling cards, you're a collector, not an investor, no matter what you tell yourself. One I need to learn.
I like the comment below...look at your cards...enjoy them. I often get caught up in the chase you mentioned. Try to stop every week or so and look my treasures. Things I would never let go of.
Great advice. I tend to keep away from the investment side of the hobby. Nostalgia is what I really enjoy. I’ve drifted towards going after singles to keep down the waste. I hate having hundreds of cards that have no value to me because I was chasing a few singles. I’ve recently been finding older, inexpensive packs at flea markets. Junk wax era stuff from when I was a kid. I still get excited pulling a Larry Bird out of a pack of 1990 Hoops that cost me $2.00. I also tend to be interested in more of the cards because they’re players I followed growing up. I hope after the “boom” more people will go back to being collectors.
Great advice! Two I’d add: 1. Actually look at your cards. May prevent you from buying more. 2. Insure your cards - especially if not vaulted. And vaulting makes 1 difficult.
I set collect base cards and image variations (prior to golden mirror) of flagship and heritage. I keep all the cardinals I get but don't team collect, I PC tommy edman because why not, and I sell every Parallel I get just for fun. No investments for me I just love looking at the story of each season through these full sets in binders. Maybe one day they'll be in good enough shape where some new collector will be excited and it will all be worth it.
As a collector of vintage cards, I have found that trying to build sets is not viable unless you already have the big dogs in the set. It's easy to get a few hundred commons. It's really hard to get a key rc for an affordable price.
Great video! This is some of the best advice I have heard for a long time and some of the toughest stuff to do! Thanks for the great advice and hope everyone really listens!
@@jonathonsantamont8527brother I am one of the biggest sports-cards social influencers in the hobby! Many people are calling me the next Vegas Dave!!!!
Was hoping to hear more about error cards. As i have an error and both correct cards. Can not find any info on it being an error. Card in question is. 1992 upper deck AW5 Detlef Schrempf with the AW6 David Robinson back. And then i have both AW5 and the AW6 normal hologram cards. But the Schrempf with the Robinson back. I can find no information about it being an error.
Cards with wrong backs happen once in a while but they aren't specifically listed as error cards. They usually aren't worth a lot, unless you can find a collector of the player involved who really wants to get every card possible of that player.
I have a small side collection made up of great/HoF players who made a brief forgettable stop in Detroit. So cards of guys like Iverson, TMac, Adrian Peterson, etc in Detroit uniforms.
Great video Scottie! I started collecting Barry Zito because he was my favorite pitcher during the 2000's and I was a lefty pitcher at the time too. And it's been fun being able to get cheap cards of cool refractors and parallels that for other players go for $100s in the same set.
Great video Scott! You could even dive deeper on the education side with understanding how grading works, why different companies are more desirable than others, and not to be so adamant about grading everything. There are plenty of cards that I prefer to have raw just to build out that side of my collection.

The point you made about having a side player you collect is a good point. Problem is my two guys are expensive, Kobe Bryant and Nolan Ryan. Still have been able to acquire both of their rookies but it took awhile. And yeah I never compare my PC to others. I've been collecting for years but I know I'll never own a 52 Mantle but some low end vintage raw I can afford.
1987 TOPPS NESTLE DREAM TEAM JOHNNY BENCH BABE RUTH ON BACK WRONG BACK CSG 8NM ONLY ONE FOUND OUT OF HOLE SET .CAN YOU TRY TO FIND MORE OF THESE CARDS AND LET ME KNOW THANKS.
I was in a film once where I played a Russian character named Alexy.... so I collected all of the variations of AJ Alexy cards from last year's flagship, clearly authentic, chrome, autos etc... just for fun... he pitched for a few games for the Rangers. Not sure where he's at now (Chicago, maybe?). Anyways, his cards were/are very inexpensive and available, so gathering them all didn't require much on an investment.... it's kind of fun to flip through them all....
Always love watching your video's, Scottie!! Keep up the good work!! .. We all make mistakes and hindsight is 20/20... collecting errors come with the territory and I agree with all the points you've made here. Avoid the hype and collect the players you love!
Don’t get it the rut of collecting as an investment, because it can be devastating when your cards don’t perform the way you predicted. Collect players you like and enjoy, simply because you like them. Then the market doesn’t matter and your happy because you have your Nootbar or Bartolo!
Hey Scottie, one of my current favorite sets is 2019 Topps Update. I have been trying to find out how to pull one of the 5 X 7 short prints. I have tried searching and can’t find anything on the subject. I am a rare set builder who likes to rip also, makes ripping a little more fun for me. Maybe you can’t pull one of them and they were redemptions? I don’t know and was hoping you knew. Thanks again. Always enjoy your content!
There's alot of ebay seller's that sell alot of rare 5×7 cards. Message them. I'm sure they could give you the information you are looking for. I have a few in my PC.
One of my side collections that I'm doing for fun is tied to the player I PC, and collecting all of their black /##'d parallels which there are several because they've been playing for a while. I just like how they look and whether they're worth anything in a decade or 3 doesn't ultimately matter. The more expensive cards I've purchased is where any concern with value is.
IF YOUR BUYING JUST RETAIL FROM WAL-MART TARGET I HOPE YOU'RE JUST DOING FOR THE HOBBY. BECAUSE YOU WILL STRESS YOURSELF OUT BECAUSE YOU WILL NOT GET YOUR MONEY BACK. "Comparison is the thief of joy". I absolutely love that quote Scottie B. Love your channel and the great advice you offer.
Great insights Scottie!
Nice Teddy Roosevelt quote.
Wise advice, Scott. Thanks for the video.

great advice
As someone whose collection is about 96% Royals....I love me some Country Breakfast. Also slowly building up my Grienke PC. Great Video!!!!
"Collecting errors"... I thought this was going to be about buying Billy Ripken cards.
There's only 1 billy ripken worth owning.
I thought the same thing. Error cards, not collecting card mistakes.
That's exactly what I thought....
Same here. Liked this subject more.

Dont invest much money into base cards. In 10-20 years i think only the serial numbered stuff will have value. I may be wrong, but thats my hunch

With good reason - they're the 3 most criminally undervalued players in the sport.
