  • This video shows you how to fix your broken or intermittent pool cover pump when the float switch stops working. The repair will take around 30 minutes to disassemble, replace the switch and reassemble the pump to get it working again. To confirm the switch is the problem, you can use a AC meter to see if the 120 volts is passing through the switch. Don't apply 120 volts to the unit if you aren't experienced with safely measuring a voltage that large.
The replacement micro switch is XGM2-88Z1

Would have been nice to see how you remove old switch and replace with new one. Dur.

My switch is working fine. My Little Giant pump is also humming like it wants to run but can't overcome the start-up torque. It starts up and runs when turn the impeller to help it get started. I could smell something burnt up when I took it apart. Guessed that it was a blown capacitor. The motor is a PSC (permament split capacitor) induction motor, and yes the capacitor was burned up. I was going to look up the size and type and get a replacement capacitor and use the old pump (if I can get it runing again) as a back up. Good luck to all.

i pulled the bottom part off of the pump to see if there were any parts to access but it's just the metal canister of the motor. i didn't go any further with disassembling the unit to get to the capacitor.

Had the same exact thing happen to me. Any updates?

Look up vapor lock here on youtube. Maybe your issues?

If you have the bottom of the pump casing removed (the impeller is now visible) you can see a rubber ring between the top plastic casing and the metal canister of the pump. If you pry out the ring and remove, you can lift the metal canister out out of plastic casing. On top with the wiring sits a 8uF capacitor.

Great video. My microswitch is working fine also. The motor just hums when the switch turns it on. I would like to continue the tear down but don't see how to get to the capacitor. How do I separate the pump assembly from the motor? Any hints will be appreciated. I already bought a replacement . I have nothing to lose. Thank you

Look up vapor lock or air lock here on youtube. Probably your problem?

Getting to the pump wiring seems to require removing the pump motor. I have not discovered how to remove the pump motor from the plastic casing. I was hoping to replace the power cord, but doing so requires a similar level of access.

Thanks for this video! Are you getting any power to the motor with the bad switch? On mine the motor is humming quietly when the float goes up but the pump doesn't actually kick on. Any ideas?

It sounds like your micro switch might be working if you hear your motor humming when the float goes up.

When the motor is humming try tapping the motor on the concrete sidewalk to see if that will break loose the motor impeller maybe it's stuck on some debris
You can also try blowing water backwards it in the hose hookup to see if that helps break loose any clogged up problem inside of the impeller compartment

When I plug mine in, it trips my GFCI outlet. What might be causing this?

    • @dalechalkey3729

there might be a short circuit in the pump somewhere. can you plug the unit in a power outlet that doesn't have an GFCI and see if a circuit break pops instead of the GFCI?

All the electronics is inside the top of the unit. I would try opening up the top to see if the seal may have failed and flooded the wiring.

Is is a screw in part or a clip in or does it need to be soldered?

    • @craighansen1632

@@semajd The electrical connections just slide apart. The mounting of the part also just slides off the two plastic pins.

Sadly I replaced my micro switch and it's still dead. Going to replace the unit I think 😢
