This is really strange for me. I grew up in Oakland and Berkeley. My friends and I were considered "hipsters" but not one of us fit the description of these Wealthy Elite A-holes who gentrified our homes so badly that many people like me had to move away years ago. It used to be the best place in the world if you were to ask me, but back then I was welcome in my home city. My race wasn't an issue because back then it was a known fact we're all the human race.
And now Chinaka Hodge has joined the MCU as showrunner for Ironheart.🙌🏼🙌🏼🙏🏼
Like most things George and Chinaka do, this is nothing short of brilliant. This song was a killer piece of multi-faceted social commentary before it the video brought it to a whole new level with the zombie tie-in. So good! Keep it coming, Watsky.

As someone who's seen my neighborhood get gentrified it kinda breaks your heart to see all those memories and all those people gone. This song is a masterpiece, the metaphors couldn't have been more accurate.
I have spent the vast majority of my life living and growing in Newark NJ... The hardest thing I've ever done was try to explain to someone how fucking weird it is that there is now a Whole Foods on downtown Broad Street. I was in a bar and the bartender got it, but this townie absolutely could not see the problem
It broke my heart when I had to move away from what had been my home since I was a child in the 70's. So I missed the part when working class diverse people of multiple races like me were called "hipsters" turned into people calling the Wealthy Elite "hipsters." And back then, being a "hipster" had nothing to do with "race" (witch we all knew was just a myth anyway). Oaklanders were generally not racist people back then. Hope it's not really changed this much.

But by the time I had to move because of gentrification in the Bay Area, it was no longer just a cool Socialist Workers Collective with the healthiest food that was still affordable for us people with low incomes. Not just another chain, let alone Corporate entity. Don't be afraid to explain such things. It's important people know the history.

Definitely the sickest video off Cardboard Castles, and one of the best songs on it as well. The truth is that gentrification is a huge problem, and Watsky addresses it so eloquently here, even admitting that he, in appropriating hip hop as it were, and indulging in the culture of white trans-cultural subversion. I also love the caricatures of hipsters. They are so detailed, even down to the Coachella wristband.

I think this song is about two things.
First, frustration over upper-middle class, (mostly) white people gentrifying traditionally black/Latino neighborhoods and appropriating their culture. E.g., Watsky had a chip on his shoulder over people pronouncing Latino communities in L.A. with an exaggerated Spanish dialect, even though the actual Latin Americans living there pronounced them the American English way. This would explain the line "I'm like, "hola Mama; I'm your Papa; Can I please have DOS DORRRRRRRRRRR-CHATAS?!""
Second, how the definition of the word 'hipster' had become so broad, it could be applied on anyone. It can refer to being into retro-stuff, rejecting the mainstream, following a certain style or brand, pretentious academics, pretentious anti-academics or the gentrifying class mentioned in the paragraph above, or it could be neither of those and something else completely. It was up to the point that Watsky himself could be defined as a hipster.

This song is AWESOME Watsky.
Did anyone else notice the piano playing under the music following the staredown of Hipster Watsky and Chinaka? It added a whole level of nuance to the last part of the song. I mean, it's a song about a hipster zombie apocalypse and still finds a way to make an emotional connection in even the tiniest ways. As is said, little things can make a big difference. This is why I love Watsky.
Also, if you pay attention. The moment he starts rapping after he's infected is RIGHT at the 4:20 mark. Blaze it.

As a bay area resident who's watched San Francisco gentrify faster than caviar, I gotta say, the city I love has swarmed full hipsters. I want to save my hood but it's got so much hipster presence I'd take genocide to clear it.

This was great but I feel like yuppies gentrify neighborhoods way more than hipsters. I live in Austin which is rife with hipsters but most of them are poor and can't afford to gentrify shit. I guess they're largely hippie hipsters which is maybe different.
