Roland JV-880 Analog Synths

  • No typical 90ies stuff, no pianos, no whistles, no mallets and bells.
    Just great emulations of analog and classic synths of the 70ies and 80ies, like Minimoog, Mellotron, Solina, Prophet 5, CS-80, OBXa, Jupiter 8, Juno and only typical sounds, like Basses, Leads, Pads, Strings, Brasses, Sequences and so on.
    I only recorded one patch at the same time, no performances and no overdubbing. I used only the JV-880 with the Expansion Card JV80 4 Vintage Keys.
    There are only custom sounds and some sounds from this expansion card. Everything is played life without midi. There are no additional effects and mastering.
    Of my opinion the JV-880 is the best sounding synth from the complete JV series and a really great very underrated synth.

    I am so happy there are still some great "vintage" synthesizers in the market, that come in the disguise of a cheap digital rompler. I just completed my collection with a Roland W-30, D-110 and JV-880 (for about 10% the price of a Juno 106 or 1% the price of a Jupiter 8).

      There are a lot of great bargains, like an extremely warm sounding Korg 01/Wfd I bought for 110€ or a Yamaha w-5 for the same price. Sound is better then the new romp,er’s have, just less functions and bad display.

    • @Johnsormani
      @Johnsormani 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes totally True, Even a D10 ( or better even D110) can get you some really warm and fat sounds. I got a D20 for 25€ last week. Looking out for a cheap JV-880 now.

      When you put it in % terms like that, it's pretty impressive. And of course it wasn't that long ago that people looked at things like the Juno as dated. and no one would have believed how much people are willing to pay for them now. Who knows, in 15 years you may be sitting on a goldmine when all of these digital bargains become cool again.

    I remember when the JV80/JV880 was launched. Everybody loved it for the emulation of strings and guitars. It was a solid "truth" that the filter was cold and that it could not do analog synth sounds very good. It was also more expensive than analogs at that time so I ignored JVs cause I preferred analog sounds of MKS series. No 30 years later I like the dreamy pads and string emulations in the JVs cause they have a special "glow" that real analogs does not have in the top end. Funny how things change.
    Would have been great if you had shown the actual preset names in the video or list them in the post.

      @@vintagesynths Thank you. It was a suggestion about making the videopart in the video a bit more useful as well if the text in the display had matched the sounds. I was a overwhelmed by the amount of low end bass in some of the presets on my machine. It was really too much. Have you experienced the same?

I also have a JV 1080 that I love and use a lot, because I am a big fan of the Roland Sound of that decade. But it's true, the JV 880 has got something special to it, especially for the pads.

    I bought one brand new when it was released. I always like its overall sound at that time. Then, after several years, I moved to Yamaha... So I packed it in its box during few years and I tried to sell it last year because it's still in mint condition with all documents and papers. So, I decided to take some nice photos in order to sell it, cleaned the hardware and then I plug it to check the sound... Wow that unit still sounds amazing! It has LOTS of punch, very strong presence but it lacks of good effects. The JV-880 never sounds flat, it has a STRONG character but deserves a bit of help on external effects to deliver its true voice. Damn... pads are surreal! JP-8 patches are beautiful on this machine. It's also a pretty easy to use unit, simple and intuitive. So instead of getting some cash with it, I built a new home-studio desk to reinstall it 😂
