To put the stove out first I remove the rubber ring from inside the lid, then lift the windscreen from the side slits using a knife and then come from the side with the lid and drop it on the stove. The stove will be hot for a while, enough to damage the rubber ring.
I have had mine for years. I just got the Romanian haversack that goes with the stove. There is a hook above and below the stove, that the leather strap goes through for fastening. The stove rides nice outside of the haversack. A bit hefty though, once the wool bedroll is added above and an 8x8 canvas oilskin.
Your channel always comes through with great answers to questions I have! I saw the Swedish M40 in use elsewhere, and then I saw how much those go for. I then noticed that the stoves and windscreens are pretty cheap so I was curious if and what other mess kits would might work on it.
Great channel! I binge watch your videos often as a whistleblower federal investigator & Navy Brat living in a tent in Vermont winters. I am curious as to why many cooking kits use this oval shape? Is there any particular reason why they use that sort of U shaped oval? Like the Pathfinder kit, too. I'm going to go with an alcohol stove kit because propane prices are now outrageous & so the butane & iso cannister are non-existent here.
Thnx for checking clean tip for the burner. Have kit and now can see mine needs attn before actual use. Practice indoor on gas range. Cooks fine , ez cleaning and rugged. Works great boil in bag, type foods.
I've got the stainless steel swedish trangia stove kit, bought it years ago for cheap when it was basically ignored by most. Out of all my military mess kits, of which I have many, it is the best one, extremely heavy duty. The one thing about it is that it also my heaviest mess kit so not something I would carry normally, but in a bug out situation, for an extended camp out in nowhere, that is the one I would pick.
The military burners like you have fits in the Optimus 77a cookset which came with a svea burner that had a simmer ring. It’s the same size as your burner which is a bigger diameter than the current trangia burners. I think I have 6-7 stainless Swedish mess kits left over plus several aluminum ones. Never had the Hungarian or German Mess kits. Looks like you could modify the windscreen/stand to fit the kit better. If your burner leaks solder the outer lip.
I will have to pick some up, I tried some mothers metal polish and it cleaned it up some but would not take off some of the tarnish. Not too worried about it, as its just going to get dirty again but I do like to take care of my stuff, so I will give it a shot! Thanks.
I have the Swedish stove, the sender thought it was Polish but it's not, it fits my Polish mess kit that looks similar to the Hungarian you have. I do not have the alcohol burner or fuel bottle
Great Vid ! Take the O ring out before you put the flame out they well melt there is snuffer cap for them , I have the Rare Stainless Steel Swedish Complete Mess Kit bought it in the late 1999's . HEET the top Fuel
now that's a cool set up with the Trangia stove and mess kit....I have 2 china knock offs (Alocs) of the Trangia and find there real good day hiking stoves
Find denatured alcohol for indoor use. Heat is, but I believe there are other toxic additives. Either way, for a day or two it wouldn't kill you. Wicked good price though!
I have the stainless steel Swedish cook set and the German mess kit as well, been using both for decades, had no idea the Swedish SS mod is hard to fine.
The army issue burner is not really "built like a tank". They are made comparatively thin to save money and crack much easier than the regular trangia burner. They leak easier and have no simmer ring.
Very cool friend ! Good looking stove and mess kit. All seem to work , quickly, and, quite well ! Great refinishing, BTW. Had you not mentioned it, we would not have known. Well done sir. Peace, John.
Question: Have you had any bubbling or paint peeling issues with the repaint you did; I've used high heat paint for repainting mess kits, but haven't tried standard camo paint with clear coat ever, so curious abou the results...especially since color choices for high heat paints are pretty limited.
I got this setup, and to be honest the mess kit only kinda fits in the stand. The lid prevents it from going all the way into the stand leaves a lot of room on the bottom and makes it way taller than a real M40 mess kit. It’d do in a pinch but it’s a cobbled together kit. Wish someone made reproduction m40s because I’m looking for one since the Hungarian one doesn’t really fit
I just picked up this same combo but with a Polish Mess kit. Will it nest with the Swedish Stove? It’s the 1985 RZWM Polish Mess kit. I just bought them separately on ebay after waiting months to find them at a reasonable price! The pandemic really seemed to drive the prices of these military surplus kits up! If anyone knows if these two will nest together, please let me know!
Can't seem to find any supply of these here in the states. And the few i've found overseas have pretty steep shipping. Feel like selling me your kit? lol.
If you need to repaint it, you can use some aircraft stripper, (Its called aircraft remover always thought that was funny) but its super strong paint remover that will strip the paint off very quickly, make sure you do this outside and use gloves that stuff WILL burn your skin. When its done, wash it off good, and repaint. Make sure to use high heat paint so it wont just flake off when you heat it up!
Probably the BRS 3000T titanium stove, 25 grams, it does need an iso butane canister to work but its crazy small and light. Here is the review I did on it a while back th-cam.com/video/fJho19TKLAQ/w-d-xo.html
If you burn the little burner totally dry will that eventually ruin the fabric that’s on the inside? Or should you stop the flame just prior to the fire burning out?
Wondering the same thing! Just purchased this combo but with the 1985 Polish Mess Kit! It will take a couple weeks to get here, but when I receive it, I will comment again and let you know if someone hasn’t already!
the most pressing question i have, as i recently just acquired one, here in LA, is the paint safe? worried about carcinogenic fumes when on the fire. i tried placing mine on open fire yesterday - and it could be me overreacting - but the paint seemed to not be liking the flames. quickly switched to my non-painted post-war kit. (i think my Hungarian kit has original paint, as it’s pretty rough)
Oh its a slab of steel that someone made for me to knock out pins when doing gunsmith work. He drilled the steel and then made the wood frame it goes in. Its seen a lot of use over the years.
The VDV paratrooper kit is similar so it should fit in the stove. Of course I cant say for sure without it being in front of me but from the ones I have seen it looked very close in size/.
I've had my Swedish kit for over 30 years. Great piece of kit. Bulletproof and idiot (mostly) proof
Nice video. I bought the swedish M40 stainless steel version many years back. I still love using it. Truly bomb proof.
I miss Military surplus stores. My favorite smells in life,is army surplus, hardware stores ,Hopes number 9 ,WW 40 .

I trimmed one of mine a few inches, off of the windshield, to make it fit better in storage mode.
I recently picked up a stainless steel minus the stove and burner for ten bucks. Already had the aluminum set.
Thanks for sharing.

🤣🇸🇪 Haven’t seen one of those since 1995 (10 month service, 8 month mandatory those days). Thank for the time travel. Hälsningar från Sverige👍
what a great video - thanks for taking the time to do this!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I would like the all stainless swedish set, But for the money I would use what you found. Thank you for the video

Just wanted to add i use the Swedish for glamping and the German for BOB, hunting etc.
Some Barkeeper's Friend Cooktop Cleaner on a rag will simply wipe that brass tarnish off and make it shine like gold.

Thanks, yeah I had on idea about the O ring thing, but in the future will take it out before snuffing out the fire.
Iridium242 .....you can put the cap on “upside down” and it snuffs the flame immediately. Move the lid off until the burner cools. Jacks your Aunty!

Alcohol burner fits in the Solo lite wood burning backpack stove.
Great mess kit. I really like the stove. Great information about using the bottle of Heet.

I own a SS Swedish one also, but they're now easily around the 130 dollar range on eBay, and they're not even in good shape.

No issues yet, the paint got darker where it sits over the flame but no paint peeling or anything
