I had been holding out for a 35mm lens that impressed me. This one fit the bill. Purchased it. Excellent image quality and color rendition. Relatively fast AF. Minimal CA stopped down. Heavy vignette at f/1.4 and peripheral Cat's eye bokeh in the corners as you mentioned. Very impressed with this lens and use it often.
I really commend the third party lens manufacturers for raising the bar even higher overall. I can't wait to see what Samyang / Rokinon comes out with in terms of an 35mm f1.4 AF variant for the EF mount. Such a great time to be into photography.
This lens has been attached to my camera for a little over a month and I am so happy with it. Despite the weight which I believe it is the heaviest autofocus 35mm prime lens, its image quality is absolutely excellent indeed. I have been waiting to hear your thoughts on this Tamron’s offering since the day I bought it - and voilà! Now I love it even more. Thank you!

(If you’re planning to get yourself a full frame body in the near future like I am, then this is definitely going to be a very good investment 👍🏻)

As always an excellent review Chris. When you showed that corner sharpness my jaw literally dropped and I said "whoa!" Seriously, my Sigma 35mm Art doesn't hold a candle to that Tamron 35mm. You've sold me mon ami. Well, that and my Sigma keeps locking up my R5 whenever I try to use eye AF with it, and was just very disappointed by it's performance on my R5. It was find on my 5DmkIV, but I don't really use that much now, actually haven't touched it since I got the R5 and R6.

Hi, Your reviews are the best on youtube ! Are you planning to review some Olympus lenses in the future ? they have a few cool lenses with some nice quirks and features. They're my second favorites after the Canon lineup.
Since I own and use the Tamron 35 f/1.8VC with my D800 I'd love to see a comparison between 1.8VC -vs- 1.4. It's good to know the 35 f/1.4 adapts to Canon and Nikon mirrorless so if I ever get into mirrorless this lens would be tempting!
@nikonmark37814 The 35 and 45 1.8 are greatly built, IS weather sealed, but not quite as good as the sigma art 35 1.4 optically, which has no weather sealing or IS. This tamron 1.4 beats the sigma art 35 1.4 optically by a fair bit.. it's the weakest sigma art but still very impressive work from Tamron.

Great review Chris, the side by side comparison it telling. The new Tamron and Sigma 35's make the stalwart Canon 35MM look bad, that's quite surprising. Tamron is showing us they are as good as anyone at designing and manufacturing superb lenses.
I sold my Nikon 50mm f1.8 for that Tamron, and it was definitely worth the extra money! :-) Main reason for me was the much shorter minimum focus distance, as the 50mm was pretty much useless for almost everything I would have liked to use it for. The focus is really slow indeed, but not too big of a deal when it doesn't have to go from one end to the other.
OMG..what a beautiful lens..Just found a 7 month old lens at a great camera store in India for INR 38500...around USD 520...WHAT SAY...FLAWLESS PIECE...even had the original sticker attached to it...you are right ...all the time...that's why we listen to your gear reviews with all seriousness...
Hi Christopher. Have you had the opportunity to test with fast moving subjects and in low light? For example sports in the gym. Should I be concerned about its autofocus tracking speed?
Well this one will definitely be a contender against the Sigma Art lens if I ever decide to go back to the 35mm focal length. I've preferred the 50mm and love my Sigma f/1.4 Art lens for that focal length.
hey Chris, how does the tamron sp line of lenses focus on the Sony? I have an a7iii and am interested in the tamron 45 1.8, but am leaning toward the 50 1.4, but VC is drawing me back to the tamron. if focus matches that of the sigma, ill probably go with the tamron.
I adapted it onto my Sony camera using the Sigma MC-11 adaptor. Autofocus was okay, aperture control was a bit poor. How well it adapts onto your Sony camera will depend a lot on what adaptor you use
I've got a question pertaining to the 'close up' test where the clock is photographed. Why is the image quality here pretty poor at f/1.4 while picture quality was excellent at the same aperture during the other test with the picture on the wall? How can one lens perform in such diverging ways? Anyway, love your videos!
It's a shame about the close up lack of contrast wide open, otherwise good or great. Perhaps the sigma 35mm f1.2 DG DN for mirrorless is the better option now, especially with the lower vignetting.
Hey Chris which would you recommend out of these 3 you tested as well as the rf35mm f1.8 for the best chromatic aberration performance? I don't want to deal with too many corrections in Lightroom and want the cleanest image when shooting outdoor..
The lens would be perfect if it had VC. I don't use mirrorless and I already have the 35 f/1.8VC and had a chance to borrow the lens from my local camera store for a few hours and while the images were very, very nice I didn't think it was nice enough to replace the 35 f/1.8VC and I'd rather have VC and lose 1/3 stop and not have it but if the 35VC didn't exist then I would have purchased this lens.
Hello, great review! However, I still can't get what's the advantage over the 35/F1.8 Di VC USD when the actual 1.4f causes such vignetting, distortion lack of VC AND it's around $150 more expensive? (maybe I'm dumb, lol)
A nice review about this lense -> i order it and i am happy. Only (and yes extrem expensive and unfair comparison) the Arrimaster is better *xD* - but this is an high-end Cinemalense and only MF. I use my Tamron at my Nikon D850 and via Adapter at a Z7 and the pictures are amazing.
Selling my RF 24-70 f2.8 for the Tamron 35mm 1.4 & 35-150 2.8-4 & 17-35mm 2.8-4. All three lenses total out to the same price as the RF 24-70, less if bought used. The RF line up is so over priced, yes it might be slightly better but not thousands of dollars better.
Also worth noting is that while it's not cheap, it still is 50% cheaper than Canon's equivalent 35mm f1.4 which is a little softer according to this comparison.

You should set the rear thumb button for AF, and remove the half press, that alone was huge in improving my photography. Now I can use Ai servo on moving target and also fixed ones and center then recompose then shot, it's a learning curve but this alone increased a lot the number of useable shots, those are either perfect focus or just about, because in the past there were a lot that were far away out of focus.
tamron 35mm 1.4 vs sigma 24-35 f2 ??? how do they compare. is the tamron much better image quality ? ,for use mainly at weddings.ive watched both of your reviews on the lenses and both say great.
They'll be totally and incomparably different, so it depends on your needs, and whether you're happy to use a special adaptor to get it onto your Sony camera
Are you sure you are talking about the new 20yr anniversary SP 35mm F1.4? Unbelievably cheap at $500USD. A huge profitable opportunity if ship to US as grey import to sell at $800. I need a ticket to China then.
@@kerryl6037 I didn't buy this 35mm but instead I bought the 35-150 f2.8-4 zoom. This particular link was just an random example. You may search this lens yourself on taobao or any Chinese online store. ( BTW the price go-up a little bit, reaching about 3800 CNY as of writing )
It's not that I don't like the Sony cameras but I think that if it's an EF mount lens, you should test it with a Canon camera, it would be much more accurate for those of us that use Canon. Anyways, many thanks as always for sharing!
Christian González Verón If It performs excellently on a 42MP sensor, then logically it will perform just as good, if not better, on lower MP sensor cameras. Not sure why you think it's going to be "accurate", and especially since the camera brand has absolutely no effect on the lens' performance.
@@AbdonPhirathon Of course it makes a difference. Not every manufacturer is the same! There are third-party lenses that work great at Canon but completely fail at Nikon even though it was built for it. An adapter can always have negative effects.

The first gen VC on 35f1.8 wasn't well received at least on Nikon body people say only provide one stop shake reduction, well below Nikon's VR. Canon's 35 f2 IS lens is a fine piece of glass too shadowed by 35L but truly capable.
@@frankluo230disagree, I think the F1.8 line from Tamron delivers way above its price point which is why it was so welcome at the time by reviewers. Sad that these lenses have flown under the radar as I think they still hold value with certain bodies that do not have IBIS. I am able to get shots down to 1/8sec on my 45mm F1.8 VC which would never be possible without VC. They also have a combination of great sharpness yet pleasing bokeh that is usuallfound on much more expensive lenses.

I got this Sp 35 1.4 with Eos RP for 5 months. High image quality but got Error 01 on my cam often!! Especially in AI SERVO on. Do anyone have the same problem??

Yes, me. I have the same issue, and I've testes three samples of that lens. Err01 error occurs irregularly and without any external cause. It's definitely not a matter of dirty communication pins. 1. What serial number your lens has? My last two was: 2602, 6007. 2. Have you update firmware to version 2? I don't, but in theory, it shouldn't help (improves only issues on the Canon EOS R5 / EOS R6). Please answer, maybe together we can figured out solution.
Would like to have seen how it looks like when adapted on the sony camera. Anyway, due its huge size this amazing tamron is not for me. I love my tiny CV M 40mm f1.4 on my to go A7iii / X-T3 + close focus adapter. A charm and very enjoyable to use! Thanks for your nice reviews!

Canon do the 32mm f/1.4, and Sigma are launching a 30mm f/1.4, if you're talking about a mirrorless Canon camera. If you're talking about an APS-C Canon Digital SLR, then the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 Art is not bad

it's an issue with newer cameras. I took my 45 back last week and the tamrom rep said that the 35 and 45 have this problem on some bodies. I'm shooting with a 90d.
i’ve got a Canon R7 and am thinking about buying and adapting this lens. i fell down a rabbit hole of graphs and charts and professional channels saying do NOT use full frame lenses on crop bodies or you will not get great sharpness. curious if anyone here has used this lens on their crop bodies with good results
I'm a year too late but in hopes people see this in the future. This lens fucking rocks on an R7. It's beyond sharp. Zooming in on eyes I can see myself clear as day in the reflection. The way it renders is also spectacular. It just has a charm that I don't always "feel" from other lenses.
@Kafala of you have only nikon mirroless, I will suggest you buy the nikon version but if you also have dslr buy the tamron. Optically it's better than the nikon and heavier, but the nikon will be better for video.
@@frankluo230 its not double the weight. 800g vs 1200g at this category weight shouldn't be considered anymore since 800g is really heavy as well. I cant comment on the statement: the sigma is "way Sharper"...
@@RokPodarohow is it way sharper? The tamron 35mm f1.4 is probably the sharpest 35mm option on any system at this time. It also has clearly better rendering than the average sigma lens with richer colors.
When you do image quality tests do one with the auto corrections of and one off whats the point of turning them off if you can fix them straight out of camera

Yazeed Saber I think the biggest difference will be in the corners wide open. The Tamron is nearly perfect while the Sigma is just “good.” Stop it down a bit and there’s not a huge difference. For 35mm f/1.4 FF lenses, you’re probably looking at the two best values on the market. I’d be tempted to go with the Sigma at $600 because of it’s size and weight advantage, and because I don’t care too much about perfect outer frame IQ at f/1.4.

@@maulikpandya1452 I just got the Canon EOS R5 a few weeks ago, and literally tried the Sigma 35 1.4 (sharp but focusing issues), Canon 35 1.4 II ( really good as expected from an L lens) Tamron 35 1.8 ( sharp, small, close focusing ability). However, this Tamron 35 1.4 bests all of them. I originally bought it and returned it for the Canon 35 1.4 II, and the sales guy at the local camera store told me that I would regret returning the Tamron, and he was absolutely correct. Even if it was not $1000 less than the Canon during the rebate period, its still a kick ass lens. Just bought it again and extremely happy with the results.
funniest comment I read somewhere online was some Canon Fanboy saying his Canon 35mm was a superior lens! and then said he paid 1700 for it etc. oh? so basically he was saying a more pricey lens is automatically better??? anyway, heres the truth! the Tamron is BETTER

I own the 45mm 1.8 and my favorite go to lens. Focus is a little slow but the image sharp and bokeh so sweet

Anyway, love your videos!
Some lenses are not optimised very well for shooting close-up. A particular example of this is the Fuji XF 23mm f/2. That's why I do the test :-)
Aberration is more pronounced in lower depth of field, and depth of field depends on the focal distance (it lowers as the lens is focused closer)

You get vignetting with the f/1.8 version too, and this f/1.4 lens is sharper, and lets in a lot more light

You should set the rear thumb button for AF, and remove the half press, that alone was huge in improving my photography. Now I can use Ai servo on moving target and also fixed ones and center then recompose then shot, it's a learning curve but this alone increased a lot the number of useable shots, those are either perfect focus or just about, because in the past there were a lot that were far away out of focus.

tamron 35mm 1.4 vs sigma 24-35 f2 ??? how do they compare. is the tamron much better image quality ? ,for use mainly at weddings.ive watched both of your reviews on the lenses and both say great.
They're different lenses for different uses so it depends on your need. The Tamron is sharper

They'll be totally and incomparably different, so it depends on your needs, and whether you're happy to use a special adaptor to get it onto your Sony camera

This particular link was just an random example. You may search this lens yourself on taobao or any Chinese online store. ( BTW the price go-up a little bit, reaching about 3800 CNY as of writing )

It's not that I don't like the Sony cameras but I think that if it's an EF mount lens, you should test it with a Canon camera, it would be much more accurate for those of us that use Canon. Anyways, many thanks as always for sharing!
Christian González Verón If It performs excellently on a 42MP sensor, then logically it will perform just as good, if not better, on lower MP sensor cameras. Not sure why you think it's going to be "accurate", and especially since the camera brand has absolutely no effect on the lens' performance.
@@AbdonPhirathon Of course it makes a difference. Not every manufacturer is the same! There are third-party lenses that work great at Canon but completely fail at Nikon even though it was built for it. An adapter can always have negative effects.

No need to. The lens tested spectacularly on a 42mp camera. So, it will work spectacularly well on a lower resolution camera

nice video again. i have the Tamron SP 35mm f/1.8 with the image stabilizer you can get it on ebay for 1/3 the price the vc is working great on tamron lenses
The first gen VC on 35f1.8 wasn't well received at least on Nikon body people say only provide one stop shake reduction, well below Nikon's VR. Canon's 35 f2 IS lens is a fine piece of glass too shadowed by 35L but truly capable.
@@frankluo230disagree, I think the F1.8 line from Tamron delivers way above its price point which is why it was so welcome at the time by reviewers. Sad that these lenses have flown under the radar as I think they still hold value with certain bodies that do not have IBIS. I am able to get shots down to 1/8sec on my 45mm F1.8 VC which would never be possible without VC. They also have a combination of great sharpness yet pleasing bokeh that is usuallfound on much more expensive lenses.

When I have money again I think I will make something like yours for myself. It would be really interesting, how my voigtlander, minolta and pentax lenses compare against a canon kit lens.

If it doesn’t say VC on the label, wouldn’t one naturally conclude that it doesn’t have image stabilization?

The 1.4 has better image quality and a wider aperture. The 1.8 has image stabilization

I got this Sp 35 1.4 with Eos RP for 5 months. High image quality but got Error 01 on my cam often!! Especially in AI SERVO on. Do anyone have the same problem??
Yes, me. I have the same issue, and I've testes three samples of that lens. Err01 error occurs irregularly and without any external cause. It's definitely not a matter of dirty communication pins.
1. What serial number your lens has? My last two was: 2602, 6007.
2. Have you update firmware to version 2? I don't, but in theory, it shouldn't help (improves only issues on the Canon EOS R5 / EOS R6).

Would like to have seen how it looks like when adapted on the sony camera. Anyway, due its huge size this amazing tamron is not for me. I love my tiny CV M 40mm f1.4 on my to go A7iii / X-T3 + close focus adapter. A charm and very enjoyable to use! Thanks for your nice reviews!

Canon do the 32mm f/1.4, and Sigma are launching a 30mm f/1.4, if you're talking about a mirrorless Canon camera. If you're talking about an APS-C Canon Digital SLR, then the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 Art is not bad

it's an issue with newer cameras. I took my 45 back last week and the tamrom rep said that the 35 and 45 have this problem on some bodies. I'm shooting with a 90d.
i’ve got a Canon R7 and am thinking about buying and adapting this lens. i fell down a rabbit hole of graphs and charts and professional channels saying do NOT use full frame lenses on crop bodies or you will not get great sharpness.
curious if anyone here has used this lens on their crop bodies with good results
I'm a year too late but in hopes people see this in the future. This lens fucking rocks on an R7. It's beyond sharp. Zooming in on eyes I can see myself clear as day in the reflection. The way it renders is also spectacular. It just has a charm that I don't always "feel" from other lenses.

@Kafala of you have only nikon mirroless, I will suggest you buy the nikon version but if you also have dslr buy the tamron. Optically it's better than the nikon and heavier, but the nikon will be better for video.

at this category weight shouldn't be considered anymore since 800g is really heavy as well.

@@RokPodarohow is it way sharper? The tamron 35mm f1.4 is probably the sharpest 35mm option on any system at this time. It also has clearly better rendering than the average sigma lens with richer colors.

When you do image quality tests do one with the auto corrections of and one off whats the point of turning them off if you can fix them straight out of camera

@@OkwyUgonweze i wouldnt say it's significantly better, but it certainly is better than the Sigma, but you really have to look hard.
On my screen, at least through the TH-cam compression, the Sigma looks clearly sharper, especially if you look at the edges of the numbers.
Sigma has AF reliability issues though. Tamron is just killing it lately with their newer G2 series.

This Tamron will be considerably sharper but the Sigma lens is still good
Yazeed Saber I think the biggest difference will be in the corners wide open. The Tamron is nearly perfect while the Sigma is just “good.” Stop it down a bit and there’s not a huge difference. For 35mm f/1.4 FF lenses, you’re probably looking at the two best values on the market. I’d be tempted to go with the Sigma at $600 because of it’s size and weight advantage, and because I don’t care too much about perfect outer frame IQ at f/1.4.

Based on those reviews it is a fantastic lens with extraordinary image results. Tamron 35mm f1.4 just arrived in market. So I just wanted to know, which lens is better about image results. Like sharpening, contrast, colors and bokeh.
I really love to click story telling pics, so 35mm would be better choice.

@@maulikpandya1452 I just got the Canon EOS R5 a few weeks ago, and literally tried the Sigma 35 1.4 (sharp but focusing issues), Canon 35 1.4 II ( really good as expected from an L lens) Tamron 35 1.8 ( sharp, small, close focusing ability). However, this Tamron 35 1.4 bests all of them. I originally bought it and returned it for the Canon 35 1.4 II, and the sales guy at the local camera store told me that I would regret returning the Tamron, and he was absolutely correct. Even if it was not $1000 less than the Canon during the rebate period, its still a kick ass lens. Just bought it again and extremely happy with the results.

zooms are better for travel. you might like the 24-70 f4 for that as it's cheaper and lighter.
