Nice! He’s tough at first, but you’ll love him even more the more you go through his discography. We need Real Gone, Bone Machine, and Mule Variations pronto! All true blue classics, to my mind.
@@shuddupidc true. Mule Variations and Bine Machine are my other two to make up his top 3. But can’t go wrong with ai many, including some early stuff like Closing Time, Small Change, The Heart of Saturday Night. Great discography.
I think it's time to listen to some Neil Young! Any of "Everybody knows this is nowhere", "After the gold rush", "Harvest" or "On the beach" are great starting points to me. I feel the same kind of kinship with those albums as I do with this one, it's something special!
Such a massively influential record for me in my early 20's. Check out his follow-up record Blood Money for more strange, dark, and twisted Tom energy. Sounds like it was recorded in a casino in hell.
Hell yeah Tom Waits! I haven't listened to all his albums but I especially like Blue Valentine and Real Gone. One of a kind artist and I hope you do more from him because he's really special.
Anywhere I Lay My Head is probably my favorite song here, and one of my fave Waits ever. Something deeply moving about it. Great album, many good songs, but that one followed by “Time” and “Rain Dogs” are the special ones.
Tom Waits was my number one artist of 2024 on Spotify.. I was in the top 0.004 percent of listeners. Been asking for this one for a minute and i was stoked to see it pop up. 🙂 He has one hell of a discography to explore if you decide to go down that rabbit hole. Check out Postal Service - Give Up soon. 🔥
Hey Smags, during your reaction of Beach House's Bloom, you said at 9:00 you would do a Minecraft lets-play if the video got 300 likes. The video has 903 likes, yet for some reason I can't seem to find your Minecraft let's play (I would also accept a reaction/review of Hot Fuss from the Killers
Go Closing Time or Nighthawks at the Diner next. You need to know where he starts from first to truly appreciate. Also, start looking at the songs as less songs and more short stories. Each song is a charater. It makes understanding Tom a heck of a lot easier. After that, do Mule Variations, Bone Machine or Swordfish Trombone.
I’m late but I’d love to see a This Heat review for either of their 2 albums. They seem to have inspired a lot of the previous artists you’ve listened to over the years so it would be an interesting contrast.
Tom Waits is one of those artists, the more you listen to, the more blown away you are. I mean - at least I am. Rain Dogs are incredible, no matter how many times you listen to them. If you're looking for some more, I'd recommend The Heart of Saturday Night. Very different, but one of my absolute favorites. Another artist that keeps surprising and being great, no matter what he does, is Nick Cave.
Somehow I got to your channel. I been trying to find some good bands to get into. I absolutely love Radiohead and i think thats how i found your channel. Lile your vibe and taste. Im gonna have to check out some of new ones. Hlappy New Year
thanks for the videos a few recommendations: songs - Adrianne Lenker (folk, singer-songwriter) Ghosts of the Great Highway - Sun Kil Moon (folk rock, singer-songwriter, alt-country) SMILE :D - Porter Robinson (pop-punk, pop, electronic) Process - Sampha (experimental r&b, great production) Hypochondriac - Brakence (very experimental emo rap, glitch pop) Reading Writing And Arithmetic - The Sundays (the smiths ish, with beautiful female vocals)
Next do Lou reeds ‘Berlin’ album (1973) it’s a concept album about an abusive relationship en shi it’s sooo so sad much more chill ig but pretty intense 👌👌💅💅
You know I'd wonder how you'd like a Frank Sinatra Watertown, it's considered a bit of a 'black sheep' of his records given it's more 70s pop-rock leanings but I think it's easily his best
My recommendations are as follows - Mogwai - every studio album from Ten Rapid to Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will, and the live album Government Commissions. also worth noting they have a new album out on the 24th called “The Bad Fire” - SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE - ENTERTAIMENT, DEATH and YOU’LL HAVE TO LOSE SOMETHING (the latter of which was in my top 10 albums of 2024)
Tom has many different voices he's used in his career but the majority of them since 1975 have been so hoarse-sounding. But his vocals are like another instrument. He tried to croon like a folkie on his first two albums but then discovered if he sang with more shot-sounding vocals, he'd stand out more. Good assessment as he was just an average talent as a pure singer. He decided to let everyone hear how ravaged he could sound with mountains of cigarettes and whiskey (mainly from the 1975-80 period of his life) and he's never looked back. Apparently it was inspired by an uncle who had a damaged voice from childhood throat operations. His jazz bohemian period might've been the most rough sounding voice of them all too :D Even more shouty and gravelly than anything on Rain Dogs. You expect the weird so much that when "Downtown Train" comes on, you're taken aback by an actual poppy song. It was one of his few hit songs. And wouldn't you know it, it became a smash for Rod Stewart a few years later (who Tom thanked for letting him build a pool for his kids haha).
I think you would love this ALBUM "Vapen & Ammunition" by a Swedish band called "Kent". It is in Swedish but you don't really need to understand the words to understand the music, it's very similar to Radiohead and other 90s bands.
Tom Waits is one of my top 5 artists I think. He can get pretty avant garde so if you want more of that, you should do Frank's Wild Years or Swordfishtrombones next. But if you want some more traditional (but still fantastic) stuff from him, try The Heart of Saturday Night or Foreign Affairs. I also just remembered Nighthawks at The Diner exists. Which is one of the best albums of the 70s imo.
Most of the lead guitar on the first half of the album (or side 1 as we old folks call it) was by Marc Ribot. This is the first of his many collaborations with Waits. He's a perfect match. Keith Richards, a hero to and kindred soul with TW, is on three tracks. But the one you singled out as your favorite, Downtown Train, features the legendary punk/avant gardist Robert Quine. Don't miss his work with Richard Hell and the Voidoids or his early 80s albums with Lou Reed, especially The Blue Mask.
Since you listened to this one, you should complete the trilogy with Swordishtrombones and Frank's Wild Years. Though my 2 favorite Tom albums are Mule Variations and Blue Valentine. Also, I bet most of his fans would also push you toward Bone Machine. You can't go wrong with any of those. Oh, and since you liked Downtown Train so much, you should probably try Heart Attack and Vine. The song Jersey Girl will knock your socks off.
You'd probably like his first album a lot. More traditional singer songwriter album with some excellent ballads. For the experimental stuff I'm big on the one before this Swordfishtrombones, and the one after, Franks Wild Years. He's got a lot of good stuff
This is my favourite album. You should try Frank's Wild Years and Swordfish Trombones next, in my mind they are kind of a trilogy of sonic bliss. They are going to play Anywhere I Lay My Head at my funeral, or I come back to haunt them.
Tom Waits is an artist active for 40 years, but despite how many albums he has only a couple that are only good. Not many can agree what album is his best, just a few are more popular favourites like Rain Dogs and Bone Machine.
never been that into it, the ones where he's more lowkey are fine but when gets more eccentric he just sounds like Tigger and I can't take it seriously
Please do puberty 2 by Mitski. You seemed to really enjoy bury me at Makeout Creek and Puberty 2 is the album that came directly after. It is so good. It kind of has a similar sound, but is more mature.
Mule Variations would be another great one for the channel. Some of his best writing ever. Tearjerker ballads. Gristly weird moments. And also a Filipino Box Spring Hog.
Completely random, but would LOVE to see you react to more Modest Mouse! Gotta check out their stellar albums “The Moon & Antarctica” & “This is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About”
I know this is unrelated, but I saw you had Home With You by FKA Twigs in your top songs of 2024. You gotta give her first album LP1 a listen. Every song is equally as good or better.
Smags you gotta check out Waiting to Spill by the Backseat Lovers and Something you Needed by flipturn. They’re such great albums and it’s been two years by now
If you want a “chill”, beautiful, poetic singer-songwriter album, listen to “Songs of Leonard Cohen”. I think “Songs of Love and Hate” is even better, but that will make you depressed af
Nice! He’s tough at first, but you’ll love him even more the more you go through his discography.
We need Real Gone, Bone Machine, and Mule Variations pronto! All true blue classics, to my mind.
hes only goin to the top of the hill

Smags pulling through yet again with the classics. Please react to _Ys._ You're like the maternity ward the way you consistently deliver.
Ys, yes please
Glad you're digging into more experimental stuff!
Love this for the new year. Tom Waits is a treasure

Jockey full of Burbon and Downtown Train are my favourites too 😅 but they're all great.
9th and Hennepin are streets in Minneapolis. He also has a song called, "A Postcard from a Hooker from Minneapolis".
I’m late but I’d love to see a This Heat review for either of their 2 albums. They seem to have inspired a lot of the previous artists you’ve listened to over the years so it would be an interesting contrast.

I used to sing “Time” in my band in the 90s. I had forgotten that.
Somehow I got to your channel. I been trying to find some good bands to get into. I absolutely love Radiohead and i think thats how i found your channel. Lile your vibe and taste. Im gonna have to check out some of new ones.

Closing Time and Blue Valentine are great too, as well as Franks Wild Years, Mule Variations, and especially Bone Machine
Happy new year smagatha
Next do Lou reeds ‘Berlin’ album (1973) it’s a concept album about an abusive relationship en shi it’s sooo so sad much more chill ig but pretty intense 👌👌💅💅
May I suggest the fantastic Neil Young album “On the Beach”. My favorite of his…
You know I'd wonder how you'd like a Frank Sinatra Watertown, it's considered a bit of a 'black sheep' of his records given it's more 70s pop-rock leanings but I think it's easily his best
I just love the beat poetry of 9th & Hennepin. This song was my "in"...I was WTF until that track and then I was "Ooooooh. Love it!" Been a fan since.
My recommendations are as follows
- Mogwai - every studio album from Ten Rapid to Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will, and the live album Government Commissions. also worth noting they have a new album out on the 24th called “The Bad Fire”

hell yeah, do blue valentines and swordfishtrombones too
My top picks for Waits are “Closing Time” and “Mule Variations”. Either or both are worth reacting to.
