  • Virtually you can do this idea with any song! Just add the drum accents before the chord changes to help you feel and memorize where they are. Rock On! Make sure to Thank Jeff!
The Camera on this once wasn't as good as it usually is, sorry about that, but the lesson is solid!

I taught myself & limited the way I was soloing to scales & landing on the right notes on changes. These videos showed me a new way to approach improvising ...my old way was ripping off other people’s licks 🤷‍♂️ This poor af person appreciates this channel so much. It’s my favorite guitar teaching channel by far, & I’ve watched them all. Thanks 🙏

I have loved the blues and like to go through the 12-bar, but I had always missed this detail. Now that you point it out, it's always there and I just missed it before. Thanks for the enlightenment.

Yes! I can personally attest to the fact that this technique WORKS. I host regular jam sessions at my house (well, not so regular these days). Sometimes we have a drummer, sometimes not. Occasionally I notice that the less experienced guitar players miss the changes. (And it’s really hard to solo over a song when half the guitarists are playing the wrong chords!) So what I do in those situations is exactly what Ian describes here. I step out in the center and play more deliberately so that the other guitarists are watching me, and I hit those triplets just before the chord changes. I make eye contact with each guitarist in turn and make sure that he’s “got it.” Once it seems like everyone’s feeling the changes, I step back and then people can start taking solos. Works like a charm.

Brilliant. I have always struggled to hear the I to IV change. I moaned to you about this before and you told me that the change should be obvious if your bass player is doing his job. That was a catch 22, because you can't attract a bass player until you sound good and you can't sound good until you practice with a bass player. This seems to solve that dilemma, since it is so much easier to find another guitar player. Great tip.

As a bassist, I try to do this by using a very big, obvious walk to the next chord. (And as a bassist trying to sharpen my guitar skills, I really appreciate this very helpful channel!)

Someone must’ve been evicted & their was a bunch of stuff out for the trash, including a fender bass & amp. I didn’t wanna take it because I figured they would’ve come back for it. Trash day comes & the bass was still there (amp was gone) & I waited until they were gonna throw it on the truck & I grabbed it😁 I’ve been playing bass more than guitar lately, but I play it like a guitar player 🤷‍♂️ I gotta find a good bass teacher on TH-cam

The funny (not ha ha) thing about this video is that I thought drumming might help my timing, so I bought a set of drums. I was lost as to where to do that "flurry" away from the "standard" beat that I frequently hear in music. You not only helped my guitar playing ear, but my drumming as well. And no, I won't be doing any drumming for anyone, but it does help me to hear the changes and keep the time. (And work out frustrations melodically). Stay Well Groovy One. Great lesson, as usual.

Oi Stitch, unrelated to this video but has been bugging me. If I’m playing the Major Pentatonic, trying to use the 5th interval to build tension, if I’m playing the minor pentatonic is it the 5th interval relative to the minor root note, or still relative to the major root note? Cheers from Australia
