  • How to Set Up a Crab Pot:
    When I started crabbing from my kayak, I didn't see too much on TH-cam about setting up a crab pot once it arrived to my house. After some trial and error, I have tried to put all my knowledge into this video. Hope you enjoy! Please leave a comment below if you have any questions or have any requests for future videos.

    Just tie a clove hitch with a half hitch on the pot end, then run your line under a strand or 2, to lock it in & for the buoy end, just use a bowline knot; also, fill some 1" PVC pipe with sand, cap the ends & zip tie them to the inside corners of the pot...That will help keep it on-the-bottom. 🤙🏽

    You need to add weights suitable for your dept and current where ever you are placing the traps. Removable fasteners are better and allows you to add or subtract weights as you need them. Lead is better than exposed steel which will rust and damage your pots eventually.
    Last thing, on the doors for the crab entrance, at the bottom, tie on some pencil lead or fix some weight to it so it falls back close after the crabs get in. The current can keep the doors open and crabs will escape after feeding.
    Add a smaller mesh fabric over your bait box so your bait lasts longer and is not quickly stolen by smaller crabs and fish.
    You should also use tie straps as a back up to keep the sides together with the exception of one, so you can open it to empty crabs. Traps have come lose during pulling and loss of good crab hauls.
    When cutting the corner and bending in the wire to create that 5" square to allow smaller crabs to escape, you also created a longer space for bigger crab to escape in the cross pattern. You should still tie a ring to it or tie the regulated cotton thread and reform the square with it so you minimise loss. Now you will enjoy maximum enjoyment and haul if drop your boots in the right place.
    Do some anti theft tests before dropping all your pots anywhere. Make sure to GPS you location and time how long you can leave the pots to fill and where people won't steal your catch or pot. Good luck and catch many crabs.....for eating...lol

    Nice video... One thing I suggest is that you clip the 4 clips on the harness onto the 2 corners of the trap, since you didn't pinch the top so you could collapse it, clipping both bars will prevent it from being able to collapse while in use... Thanks for the vid!

    Nice video. I would add about 15lbs of weight to prevent your pot from walking. I like using cut rebar. I'd also add 1-2oz of lead to each of the doors. If there's a big tide movement, those light doors can swing open and allow crab to leak out. The advantage of the square pots is that they fill faster, but can leak. The round pots fill slower but don't leak as much due to the drop down design of the entry. Nice videos. Keep them coming :)

      Thanks for the tip! I usually fish in shallow water on calm days since I am out in my kayak but I may add a little weight anyway just to be safe. Thanks for watching the videos!

      I go to goodwill and get a stainless #5 bar bell weight and wire tie it to the bottom. Will help keep your trap in place with strong tide...(no guaranty)

      15lbs is a lot and remember that you will be pulling that crab metal cage +15lbs of extra weight+ hopefully a big load of crabs and all by hand from the edge of a kayak ... unless from a stable boat and you only need that much weight if there is a hard underwater current or big swells and still not even a good idea to dump cages in those conditions taking that chance of loosing or snagging your gear ... less than extra 10lbs is plenty and won`t hurt your back much unless 100+ feet deep.

    Great video 👍🏽 would love to see one of you tossing the 🦀 crab pot over to see it in action. Question, I’m a first timer was wondering what knots 🪢 did you tie on both the pot and the red and white floatie. Also does the floatie go in the water or do you hold on to that while the pot is in the water ?!

    i am also going crabbing from my kayak for the second time on Wednesday (the first time was accidental, caught a crab through the eye socket with a bass hook, was a keeper too!)
    Bought a very cheap crab trap from walmart, found for $9, much smaller than this one but if I can catch even 1 crab i'll be happy.

    Great video. My friend has a similar cage but he lifts his cage while sitting on top of his surf board. Last time he had 6 crabs inside but the swell was strong and the cage felt from his surf board. The crabs came out of the cage because the 4 doors swing inward so if the cage is tilted one of the doors will always be open. To fix that issue we attached carabiners next to the doors and as soon he lifts the cage he uses the carabiner to close the door so he can transport the cage using his surf board. You won’t have that issue since you are lifting from your kayak, but just a FYI . Thank you for the cool video.

      Die Hard Fishing lol, yes my friend is in good shape. In SF China beach many people use their surf board or stand up paddle board to drop their crab cages and retrieving them and it is a workout. Btw, I read you got your hobie outback from graiglist, did it come fully ready for fishing or did you had to buy many accessories like fish finder, rod holders, etc. The outback weights around 90 lbs, do you use a car top rack or trailer. I am looking at the hobie compass since it is lighter than the outback but the seat is not as comfortable. Thanks.

    • @DieHardFishing
      @DieHardFishing  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I did get it from craigslist! I got lucky as this one was pretty much set up already. I have added on a few accessories to customize the kayak to my liking. This was my first kayak so that is why I wanted to get one that was pretty much ready to go. I transport it on top of my car using some roof racks. It is a bit tricky to get up there but it works!

    • @frankc6430
      @frankc6430 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have not seen anyone put an ID on a pot from a pier because you don`t use a float from there , just tied the rope to the pier also I heard fishing from any california pier does not require a lic but lobster does so maybe crab as well... not a verified information thou.

  • @frankc6430

    I heard that if your pot lands on weeds the bottom doors can get stuck close so it is better to cut the bottom pins at the doors and also just ad some extra light weight at the bottom of the doors so it is always close and never swing and stay open, some ad extra weight in the pot in case swells push them around but if the currents or swells are bad I don`t think is a good idea to send your pots down anyways or they can get stuck or tangle with the kelp and it will be a loss... how many traps are you taking on your kayak? the 5 allowed or less?

    Do you know if a crab validation stamp and a 11" x 5" buoy and a 3" x 5" buoy is needed for using crab traps on a public pier? I know from Fort Bragg to Oregon crab traps can be used, but south of Fort Bragg it is still restricted.

      I usually fish from a kayak so I don't need any extra weight. I never fish more than 50 feet deep and I am always out during calm conditions. If you go deeper then yes, you will need to weigh it down for sure. I have a buddy that adds about 20 pounds to this and does well fishing 150-200 feet deep. Hope this helps!

      Once your pot reached the bottom, give yourself 10' - 20' more (depending on your current & tide), then just coil the rest from your hand, around your elbow, until you're about 6' from your buoy, then tie a clove hitch with each the standing and working ends (to hold the coil together). 🤙🏽

      California Fish and game says add 20% to your depth for line length. So in 30 feet, line length is 36 feet.

      I would not cut if you fish from boat. With 100 ft line only fish 75 ft or tide will sink the float. Easy to coil with float and set inside trap... or get an electrical extension cord reel and wind it up.

    • @Dosindapendence
      @Dosindapendence 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      we dont catch those little blue crab here in cali! you have to wieght our pots down so they dont walk meaning theyll end up 100 miles away in no time!! so anyone crabbing here on the west coast in the ocean i suggest you weight them down so they dont walk unless your going to be around tending on them...to many people do a 24 hour soak and end up saying someone stole their crab pots but in reality the current took them out to see.ive seen pots over 500 miles out from santa cruz calif.

    definitely NOT the way to set up a crab pot . No clip to hold the extra line, no weights, no harness float. No name/address on buoy, need 2 buoys. SMH

      that`s why he is using "weighted rope" and if not it is still up to you to clip or not your floating rope , nowadays the harness float comes with the trap and lic id is enough unless regulation changes with 1 float here in california.
