In CA, both males and females can be taken as long as they are over 5 3/4" although some consider it bad ettiquite. Check out Department of fish and wildlife for complete regulations. 10 max per person per day and Season starts Nov 2nd. Happy Crabbing
Can't wait to get back out on the water. We have current restriction in Northern California during whale migrations. No dropping pots yet. Your video was super helpful alternative until we get back out off the coast.
I see you're at the Pacifica pier in Nor Cal. I'm fairly new to the whole crab fishing scene. I have some questions. 1. Why do people at Pacifica Pier use snares over pots (mostly)? 2. Do seal lions take baits from snare cages too (as they do with pot cage) in which case, you will zip tie the cage door? 3. Using a snare and line, how heavy should the cage be?
Nice haul of dungies! :D I don't go to Pacifica Pier much b/c it's usually super windy with huge waves. I usually wind up at Fort Mason or HMB more myself.
***** For pier crabbing, I find Fort Mason to yield much more crabs in general. However you can keep dungies in HMB as opposed to Fort Mason which is part of SF Bay.
I made something similar because crabs kept eating my bait (salmon scrap & fresh bait) So I put fishing line with slip knots to my weight. Figured might as well since we werent catching any hali that day. It works. I like crab snaring much better than using the large crab cages that can be stolen after you leave them somewhere or have someone come along and empty your trap before you get back to it. Thanks.
I just found out about crab snaring this morning. How do you decide what size box to use and what do you use for bait? Is there a restriction on snare box size? This looks like fun! One more question....what kind of rods do you use (length, action, power, etc)? Thanks for the informative video!
You can pretty much use any size you like. The one he shows in the vid is a pretty good size. You can also go for the square ones which hold a bit more bait, and work just as well. Restrictions on your crab snare is going to depend on what state you're in. As for bait, I've tried various types of fish, squid, chicken hearts and gizzards, chicken meat, and chicken livers, and they all work just as well. The main determinate seems to be when and where you are crabbing at.
Thanks again, Alex. Is there a best time of the year for crabs? And, what lenght and power of rod do you like? I'm visiting LA in July. Is there a good pier that you can suggest for this in LA area? I appreciate your replies.
Alan Case Np Alan :) I found a 10' rod works best for casting farther while still being fairly easy to handle. Unfortunately I live in NorCal so I have no idea where good crabbing spots are at in Socal ;(
+Alan Case I use weed whacker cord with metal crimps. The cage is coated fencing available at home depot. You can also just buy the for about $7 on ebay.
I know this is an old video but guys let the females go , how do you think you will have a sustainable fishery if you take the breeders , those females will breed more crabs , taking them is just irresponsible, if you want to keep crabing into the future something to think about .
Wow! What are the odds! I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the clips at Pacifica Pier. I'm from Daly City and I've only recently picked up fishing/crabbing as a hobby, but I was wondering if you happened to know where I could buy chicken necks locally? After doing some internet research, chicken necks seemed to be the best bait according to the general consensus. I've tried Safeway and Pacific Supermarket but no luck. Thanks!
I frequent fishing piers up here in the northwest specifically Seattle/Tacoma and the Washington coast. with a little over 5 years experience crab fishing, I found that the best bait to use is squid. Also, mackerel and turkey necks if you can't get a hold of squid.
+Shahrilhady Shahfee There inexpensive around five dollars and up. But you can also google how to make your own. You may even have the material laying around at home.
Nigga day billions of crabs ..I ain't throwing none back and gonna catch all I cans I'll catch a thousand of Dem if I cans and won't throw none Dem back
Just like you tie yo shoes ..just cross de line push one inn under pull both da inns hard ..do dat about 10 times over ..dat duh best knot and it easy to ties it to yo pole
In Washington you can not take the female crabs, its illegal. I noticed a few of yours were female. Is the law different in California on female dungenss?
You guys probably don't really know how lucky you are to be able to catch crab....fresh free crab. We who are landlocked have to spend $60 to eat a lb of frozen crab legs.
Jim Craig What is the reasoning behind it being illegal? It seems pretty sporting for the crab? Is your fish and game department just trying to make it harder for us without boats? Just curious. Thanks for any help.
Sad you didn’t release the females
Was thinking the same thing, he had mostly female crabs. I released them, no matter what, even on a bag fishing day.
Pro tip! I use bull kelp to line the inside of the cage and put the bait in and wrap it so that way once the bait thaws it doesn't just fall apart.
Thanks for the awesome videos that you post. Looking forward to watching many more.

Are you aloud to keep female dungeness in cali? I know we can't up here in Oregon.

Would this technique work with Australian mud and blue swimmer crab species? If so I'm very keen to get my hands on one of these snares
Are you guys crabbing at the Pacifica Pier?
Tip for you if your cooking claws rinse them under cold water after they are cooked. It will separate the meat from the shell
Nice haul of dungies! :D I don't go to Pacifica Pier much b/c it's usually super windy with huge waves. I usually wind up at Fort Mason or HMB more myself.
Never fishing those areas for crab, pretty good?
***** For pier crabbing, I find Fort Mason to yield much more crabs in general. However you can keep dungies in HMB as opposed to Fort Mason which is part of SF Bay.
That's a pretty cool little tool.
Can you tell me the size of the nylon you are using?
Very cool.. Have to try this crabsnare thing in NC.
Male sure it's legal in NC.

alexkg1 Thanks, Alex. I appreciate your info and answer. What length leader do you use?
Alan Case you don't need one :) The crab snares come attached to a swivel, which you can attach straight to your line.
Thanks again, Alex. Is there a best time of the year for crabs? And, what lenght and power of rod do you like? I'm visiting LA in July. Is there a good pier that you can suggest for this in LA area? I appreciate your replies.

Thanks for sharing! This was awesome
What if I used monofilament for the beach? Will I still be good? Have you seen others do it?
OK, OK, just two more questions....what is a good source for snare boxes and what kind and length of a leader do you use? Thanks again!
+Alan Case I use weed whacker cord with metal crimps. The cage is coated fencing available at home depot. You can also just buy the for about $7 on ebay.
How many pound snares line?
What u use ? Fishing steel line is ok ?? Thks
Great video Nick! Just remember that in the water it is hydrodynamic instead of aerodynamic.
Great video....did you try the Fish Eyes fishing pole with built in camera?
I know this is an old video but guys let the females go , how do you think you will have a sustainable fishery if you take the breeders , those females will breed more crabs , taking them is just irresponsible, if you want to keep crabing into the future something to think about .
What cheap rod and reel would u suggest for snaring
too damn cool. so this prevents 1 twine line at a time. how do the crab stay as you reel it in?
would these work for crawdads as well in the midwest. since we don't have crabs here. haha
very useful information. Thanks
Hi man ur doing a great job!!! can you make a video on how to catch bass in a pond. Thanks keep it up!!!!
In the video you mention that if you don't get crabs in 15 min I should move but how far away should I move?
about 5 miles )
Was it difficult to remove the loop out the claws?
You kept female crabs? 😮
Do you have to use these crab snares with a rod or can you use them with a simple hand line?
i live on the gulf of mexico and yalls seals remind me of the dolphins on the gulf
What state do you fish in? Where I fish, you aren't allowed to keep the females.
Do you need a weight on these crab snares?
good presentation and informative. well done
What do you mean by hooking the line?
Aerodynamics are very important when under water. Lol! Just messing around. Nice vid.
Also do you need to have a strong fishing rod
I was wondering if you can fish from the beach in Pacifica w/ fishing license?
What’s the name of the trap in your video?

Hydrodynamic?
would taste a lot better if you cleaned them
Would it work on blue crabs cause I see it works on dungeoness crab
I'm wondering the same /I know this is a old comment😂
Where do I buy the crab snare? And did you have ice in chest ? I am beginner and learning.
awesome, has anyone tried this in Florida?
Do I need permit to use that in California? Venice pier
Do u also get snagged?
6:42 So many females. To be honest I was shocked this video was 14 years ago. I had no idea about snaring until a few years ago and now I am addicted.
I malaysia boy...how much 1 set....and if i want buy when...
+Shahrilhady Shahfee There inexpensive around five dollars and up. But you can also google how to make your own. You may even have the material laying around at home.
Thanks for sharing good idea how catch the crab :)
yes you can. people cast in the surf for stripers. Though going to mussel rock is usually more productive ; )
Female crab should be released back. That is common sense for more crab reproduction.
Nigga day billions of crabs ..I ain't throwing none back and gonna catch all I cans I'll catch a thousand of Dem if I cans and won't throw none Dem back
@@williamjones6053 please be joking

Awesome video
why use a snare vs a trap?
No it's not. Make sure to like us on FB theinformativefisherman
Where do you get a crab snare
Fishing stores, Amazon.com, and sporting goods stores all sell them
kingsnareguy@gmail,com
+Tony Stark Check out Matt Withans crabbing video :)
Where do you crab that you get to take females???
Thanks, Alex.
What types of line u using ? Thks
Um can you crab snare in redondo beach california
Yes but ain’t no dem crabs 🦀 there. Go Northern Cal
Here in Washington state, we can't keep the females.
You can't keep females in Oregon either.
The female meat taste way better

No English too. Pa choo tseng

Keenan Christensen what do you mean? These are legal in British Columbia.

Thanks man!
In Washington you can not take the female crabs, its illegal. I noticed a few of yours were female. Is the law different in California on female dungenss?
Yes
Is a mud crab the same as a dungeness?
No

R?
nice. can i find the same snares in Amazon ?
GREAT JOB EVERYONE TREMENDIUS.YOU ARE ALL MAKING ME VERY HUNGRY
thanks for sharing this video!
Ask any local squid is #1 and we hate it when you keep the females even though its legal for non commercial. Think about future generations.
Good vid. Just subbed
Watch out for those 'Seemeant' walls. Fuck
Did not have ice it was very cold out and they stay alive until you cook them. You can buy them online or in tackle shops near the piers.
Amazon
I catch them at the same dock hes at lol pacifica California
Cool video very informative.
nice technique
good thing there are no sea lion in the east coast...
11/7/2015 is the start of Dunge season
Just an FYI
+Tem Barron FYI Dungie&Rock crab are closed due to TOXIC Crab
WHAT BAIT DO I USE????? I've been using hotdogs but it doesn't work
It won't work with the blue crabs here at the Georgia cost. I tried it. The line is too heavy for the blue grabs.
use lighter line
I just tried crab snaring today w/ a 7ft pole using octopus as bait, went fishing for an hour and it was failure. No crabs :/
Don't use octopus. Use razor clam necks.
You guys probably don't really know how lucky you are to be able to catch crab....fresh free crab. We who are landlocked have to spend $60 to eat a lb of frozen crab legs.
It's not really free. Think about how much gear costs and fuel to get there costs.
Can't use snares legally where I am. Sweet design though.
These are illegal in Alaska.
Jim Craig
What is the reasoning behind it being illegal? It seems pretty sporting for the crab? Is your fish and game department just trying to make it harder for us without boats?
Just curious. Thanks for any help.
I think it might be because the chance of just ripping appendages off is high. Not sure though.
like kinder eggs?
thanks for the video....very informative.
Thank you for the info. This really was a helpful video. My only critique would be hydrodynamics not aerodynamics. Otherwise great video
Hydrodynamic not aerodynamic :D.
I thought females you have to throw back?
+Joe A You should throw back females as a general rule of thumb (good karma) but if it is a legal size and in season you dont have to throw it back.
hotdogs? lol really? uncooked chicken,fish,squid.
