Am i the only one who wants to give him the tightest hug? This is heartbreaking. He's so resilient for going through all that and be able to recite it again and again and again. Much respect.

Quoting a line from 'When Love Arrives':
"Maybe when love comes back it is 20 years after the divorce. Love looks older now, but is still as beautiful as you last saw her"

As much as I love seeing him perform on stages there's something lovely about this video. It's beautifully shot and this spoken word is one of my favourites of his.

  • @AcornFox
    @AcornFox 10 ปีที่แล้ว +253

    I, too, developed a stutter
    after my parents' [first] divorce.
    They separated and I
    Would spend all the air
    In my little lungs saying,
    "M-m-m-mom look what I made."
    They each remarried.
    And remarried.
    And rem-m-m-arried,
    The meaning lost like my
    Breath as I struggled
    To share the simplest,
    Most innocent things.

I hope that you read this message and know that your work made me fall in love with words. It may not seem like much just reading this, but i will remember that text and the impact it had on me. In a society like ours there is not enough place for deepness, so please never forget the influence of your words. It's by inspiration, passion and determination that we change th world. Your passion is important : it just changed me.

If I were to break even now

I must not fall into despair
For what has happened in the past
Will only lead me to break further
From which I might never recover

I love these poems that are almost shot in a 'music video' type of style. Obviously, I still love seeing people perform on stage, but there is something very intimate about the poetry and the beauty (and the absence of noise from an audience). And as always, Phil does an amazing job at sharing his stories through poetry :)

Enjoyed your poems. And your unique word choices enhanced the poems emotional impact and kept me engaged throughout.
I’m a poet specializing in Japanese forms: haiku, tanka, haibun, kyoka, senryu. I hope you don’t mind me sharing a tanka and my haiku, a tribute poem to Bashō’s frog with commentary by the late AHA founder and poet Jane Reichhold who considered my Basho haiku among her top 10 haiku of all time. What an honor.
Here’s the Bashō poem and commentary:
    Bashō’s frog
    four hundred years
    of ripples
At first the idea of picking only 10 of my favorite haiku seemed a rather daunting task. How could I review all the haiku I have read in my life and decide that there were only 10 that were outstanding? Then realized I was already getting a steady stream of excellent haiku day by day through the AHA
    forum.
The puns and write-offs based on Basho's most famous haiku are so
numerous I would have said that nothing new could be said with this
method, but here Al Fogel proved me wrong. Perhaps part of my delight in this haiku lies in the fact that I agree with him. Here he is saying one thing
about realism-ripples are on a pond after a frog jumps in, but because it refers back to Basho and his famous haiku, he is also saying something about the haiku and authors who have followed him. We, and our work, are just ripples while Basho holds the honor of inventing the idea of the
sound of a frog leaping is the sound of water
As haiku spreads around the world, making ripples in more and larger ponds, its ripples are wider-including us all. But his last word reminds us all that we are ripples and our lives ephemeral. It will be the frogs that will remain.
    ~~
    And my tanka:
    returning home
    from a Jackson Pollock
    exhibition
I smear my face with paint
    and morph into art
    ~~
    -All love in isolation
    from Miami Beach,
    Florida,
    Al

So Phil and Sarah Kaye are brother and sister? If so that is awesome and it all makes sense and makes me love her and now him even more. I never knew Phil before now but I am so thankful for meeting him. This is such a deep, rich, emotion, and meaningful poetry piece. Sarah is my hero in the SLAM poetry world and now it looks like Phil is too. Again, like Sarah, Phil doesn't raise his voice and still manages to capture and make the emotional hits become so tangible that I can grab onto them. I want to see more.
