Phil Kaye always paints beautiful pictures with his words, no matter what he's talking about. Such an honest voice. I'd love to be there when he performs.
Patricia Kamara Yes. According to the poem, Jpeg 1063 is a picture of him and one of his exes. "I read his correspondence, she hasn't written him back in years.", meaning he has not spoken to, or heard from this woman in years. "But he asks for it constantly, jpeg 1063, jpeg 1063, jpeg 1063, it was my masterpiece." Remember, this poem is in the perspective of his old laptop, meaning (in the computer's mind), he keeps clicking on this picture to look at it all the time, simply because he misses her.. the laptop thinks this picture is perfect because his master (Phil), always wants to see it. I could go on and on with each quote, but the basis of it is this.. When you miss someone so desperately, someone you haven't even spoken to in years, you start looking through old pictures, reminiscing on the happy times with him/her. This is "jpeg 1063", a picture of Phil and someone he misses very much. It's just a really nice metaphor that we can all relate to, but haven't really thought about.
an old laptop is abandonned for a new one. the laptop knew his master well and adored his master. The laptop talks about how the picture of the woman that he loves is because of the laptop, the laptop made that picture desirable to the master. The laptop is basically jealous
I think Phil wanted to talk about how much there is of ourselves in these machines. He found a way to make it poetic because, somehow, it is. These things we do on our computers, on our phones. What we keep. What we watch. What we write. The people we expect answers from. All of these things are really like a "temple" we build for ourselves, and no one ever really knows about it. Only our computers. But it speaks volumes about who we are, how we feel, everything. In the end we "leave only the walls to pray" because, really, nobody else will ever know these things about ourselves, things that we ourselves will forget. It's lonely. Phil is really genius.
The personification of a computer in this format is awesome. Even though he states that this is from a laptop's perspective, it can be viewed from his or the those who consider themselves "numbers man." So much depth, humor, and heart in his poetry.
I first watched this yesterday. I thought it was okay. Today, in school, one of my best friends said he was going to leave school and move somewhere else. I felt this unstable sensation of having such a great friend leave. When I’m back home, I suddenly felt like watching this video all over again. I watched it. And now it’s some what real and pacifying. It’s… life like
I think the laptop provides an outside perspective on what it is like to be human and the baffling actions they undertake under the control of feelings. The laptop is inanimate, it does not understand why the man is reacting like this, but we do. We relate to it. I may be wrong but it's my perspective, or at least what I took from the poem.
A gay computer. fulfilling a requests and helping someone to the end and putting something up to a degree that it is nothing yet it is still everything. When you are there for someone giving your everything when it means nothing.
He did it. Phil managed to make me cry over a computer.
How does one even make another feel sympathetic towards a laptop? Ask Phil.
Only Phil Kaye could make me feel so sad about an old laptop
I have been emotionally blackmailed by a laptop
oh hey, stranger!
myah my son
"I still feel the fingertips of my god dancing across my body"

Even the way he stood was a performance... This is incredible...
Excuse me while I go take my laptop out for a date night.
SAME
That's an insane name girl
"Is this what it means to be human?" Sent a chill down my spine
Me too
I wonder about this. I want to know the story; I feel real pain in his eyes. This can't be just from imagining computer emotions. This has depth.
Sarah kay and Phil Kaye’s poetry feels like my personal corner of TH-cam. Like it’s my secret place where the world is better
I love his metaphor about "jpeg 1063" ...that one always hits home for me.
ZackCaughtFire What does it mean though? A girl?

ZackVulnerable could you explain to me, the entire poem? I did not quite get it.

Is that what it means to be human. To build a temple to yourself and leave only the walls to pray.
Tears. No words
The way he plays with words is actually incredible, so brilliantly talented! I hope to see Phil perform live one day in the future..
Man you can just see his eyes twinkle
I have never been more touched by the thoughts of an inanimate object

before sarah made me emotional over a toothbrush now phil made me emotional over a computer.
This reminds me of the movie "Her". Phil Kaye, your poetry is beautiful.
A summary of Phil Kaye: Gets his audience *cough* me *cough* emotional over a god damned laptop.
I'm crying. I love him and Sarah. Wow.
I have to thank my laptop now for all the artwork and beauty it has shared with me.

I can only picture a gay, poetic robot and for me that is the opposite of problematic.

When you realize that the computer is a man and is having relationships with another man.

+samochan 66 I think he means that the computer knows that the girl is different now, but he still does not know.
it seems like the laptop was in love with Phil and knew that he loved the girl from the jpeg

He sounds like Sarah Kay. She's rubbed off.
