You are right. Basic functionality would still be there, but many things would fail as websites are referencing other content not via IP addresses but via their actual names. And I mean not only links that are entered by users (for example the links in this video description) but also references added by developers in the websites' source code - at least that's what I saw at a web development company some years ago. Maybe big players like google or amazon found a smarter way but this would mean they spent a lot of effort to take care of a very unlikely fail.
Andrew H It's no secret how DNS works so technically you could add a local DNS server to your home network which you can configure manually to translate some common websites to their corresponding IP adress (like youtube,google,...) but you would always need to know the IP adress first to be able to configure this 'private DNS server'. It is true that most links currently work with their generic human-readable names so they would need a working DNS system to be able to operate. So while turning of DNS and DNSSEC would not technically turn off the internet it would create a huge amount of chaos and would make the internet practically unusable for most people.
For anyone who interested in this kind of thing: ICANN's key ceremonies are actually filmed and are available to the public to watch (google "IANA key signing ceremonies" (no quotes) if you're interested), although they're not terribly exciting to watch unless, again, this is a subject you're interested in. It's 3-7 hours of a meticulously scripted, excessively documented event involving around two dozen people (ICANN staff, industry insiders, and outside witnesses which you can actually apply to be one of) sitting in a highly secure room, removing the HSMs from a secure vault, executing a bunch of commands on a Linux terminal to sign the keys or do whatever else they need to, and returning the HSM to storage. It needs to be completely public so the world can be 100% confident that EVERY time the root keys are accessed, they weren't comprised or used for anything other than their intended purpose.
Shutting off DNS doesn't turn off the Internet. It just turns off the directory where a name is looked up to find its IP address. Anyone at all can maintain their own copy of the DNS entries they use on a daily basis, so they'd be unaffected by the main DNS going away. Source: I manage a corporate DNS with over 10,000 entries. It can go out to the main DNS if necessary, but internal operations are unaffected by completely cutting off the outside world.
You left out an important element of the Culpeper, Virginia's security: traffic. It's horrendous. Anyone plotting something nefarious will get caught in traffic that will make him want to give up long before he gets near the facility.
Root hints servers usually have a 72 hour time to live on their DNS records, so it would take 3 days to “shut down” the internet - and that’s only for the DNSSEC requests - UDP requests will be unaffected. This procedure is only to re-key the DNSSEC entries on the root hints servers, and would only be needed if the current keys were compromised or the existing certificates were about to expire. If they were compromised - you’d have to figure out how first before there would be any point in re-keying those servers. This procedure would likely only be used once every ten years to generate new trusted certificates for the root hints servers.
And actually it’d be a seemless transition to the new DNSSEC keys, as they wouldn’t remove the public entries of the about to expire entries until we’ll after the new keys are in place.
Plot twist: The secret illuminati plot all along has been to keep HAI from revealing the actual dark secrets of bricks. Secret codes and government contingency plans are one thing, but revealing the brick plan is a whole different kettle of fish. If you watch the special the internet will go dark.

However, in 2020 I woke up by seeing how much influence the power players over I life have even when what they push is not reality. What they said is allowed to be said was not what was going on at our local hospital or in the streets outside my house. I admit it, I fell for the lies before, but I couldn't once reality was right outside my real window, and it was unrelated to what they said was going on in the popular platforms of influence. This stuff seems awfully spiritual. The puppet masters some talk about is nothing confusing, it's just the very real demonic spiritual world that we can give power to unintentionally. How do people not get the reason we are in this mess is because people choose to reject the truth in favor of the lies that make sense to them according to the compromising comforts they have gotten used to in this world. While this was a super interesting video, here are some facts that would argue with the "Turn Off Internet" thing: • DNSSEC is only an extension to the DNS, not all top-level domains (TLDs) support DNSSEC, and certainly not all domains in those TLDs have it enabled. Furthermore, not all devices will _verify_ the records. (Sure, big companies like Google, Apple, Twitter, etc will always implement this security feature where they can, but all it takes is a client who chooses not to verify those records in order to connect to whatever website they want -- also, the websites that doesn't use DNSSEC at all will always be accessible if ICANN decides to revoke those signing keys.) • Even if ALL DNS servers are compromised and disabled, destroyed, etc, the internet still won't be "Turned Off" as you put it in the title. As you said, DNS is a replacement to entering the IPs directly, so if it somehow stops working, it's not like you won't be able to connect over the Internet using the IP address. Sure, it would be a really big hit to the Internet if the DNS servers stop working (which wasn't even the point of the video) -- but it STILL doesn't mean that the Internet as a whole will stop working, as HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, etc does not rely on DNS. The only things that would stop working instantly will be devices that have domain names hardcoded in them. • There are many alternatives to ICANN, large ones being such as OpenNIC. Heck, anyone can run a DNS server (validating DNSSEC or not) and use them for themselves, or give access to other users for free. I believe in an event where the things described actually happen, companies such as Cloudflare (1.1.1.1), Google DNS (8.8.8.8), OpenDNS (and many more) will not sit around, and actually do something about it. I'm sorry for such a lengthy rant, as I said, the actual video was really interesting, but I thought that the "Seven People" could actually "Turn Off" the internet at something like IP level, which would be way scarier than ICANN revoking some DNSSEC signing keys. Thanks for reading my long rant! 😂

Thompsonator469 the hard drives have the master keys to the internet. But if only one was not stolen then ICANN can reset the internet and create a new private master key. To sum it up. The hard drives can reset the internet. But they are more than a reset button. They are the skeleton keys to the internet. They can redirect you from your intended site to another one. Or completely destoy your digital security.
A bit unfortunate to use Twitter for this explanation, as Twitter doesn't actually use DNSSEC. The explanation in general seems to assume that every zone is signed, which is not true - in fact the majority of DNS zones are unsigned. However, TLDs are usually signed so its true that an issue with the root key can bring down most zones, even if unsigned.
This whole key thing for the internet sounds like it would be a great premise for a cheesy low budget action movie. "The internet is in danger and we have to get 5 out of 7 of these people to one of these locations or the world is doomed!"

Wow! Thats actually kinda cool tho

Does anyone know what assymetrical math they use for the key?

Doesn't it just feel like this is about to happen? I have been "feeling that way," and I have no reason to feel that way.
If the internet goes down, I don't think it will necessary be because of 5 or 7 people with keys, God will simply say enough and the spell of it will be broken as Millennials, Gen Z and Alpha crave what is real and see it's not found in the carefully crafted and censored world of being online.

Bloody nerds
Be gone nerds
While this was a super interesting video, here are some facts that would argue with the "Turn Off Internet" thing:
• DNSSEC is only an extension to the DNS, not all top-level domains (TLDs) support DNSSEC, and certainly not all domains in those TLDs have it enabled. Furthermore, not all devices will _verify_ the records.
(Sure, big companies like Google, Apple, Twitter, etc will always implement this security feature where they can, but all it takes is a client who chooses not to verify those records in order to connect to whatever website they want -- also, the websites that doesn't use DNSSEC at all will always be accessible if ICANN decides to revoke those signing keys.)
• Even if ALL DNS servers are compromised and disabled, destroyed, etc, the internet still won't be "Turned Off" as you put it in the title.

There are seven people who can turn off the internet
Lockpickinglawyer : Nothing on 1, nice click on 2. 3 is binding...
😆 lol ah fellow man of lockpicking culture, jokes aside obviously those keys are basically some sort of fancy not for public custom device.
Take my like.

Most underrated comment on all of TH-cam

This whole key thing for the internet sounds like it would be a great premise for a cheesy low budget action movie. "The internet is in danger and we have to get 5 out of 7 of these people to one of these locations or the world is doomed!"
somebody make that!
@@robloxxer593 give me money and it should take a week to make
@Simz Zxy shut up and take my money
Blacklist had an episode on this
@Simz Zxy THE DRAMA
I’m old enough to remember when you registered a domain in the early mid nineties for a bunch of money compared to today. You got a certificate in the mail from ICANN declaring you owner. It was like getting a land deed in the mail. 🙈
Dan Kaminsky sadly passed away 2 years ago, respect to him.
Imagine going halfway across the world and be like "Oopsies these are my car keys"
"The 7 people who can turn off the internet"

IT crowd taught us all we need to know about the elders of the internet.
Oh come on. The elders of the internet KNOW WHO I AM YOUVE GOT TO LET ME HAVE IT

I knew what DNS means because everyday I have that message: "Your DNS server isn't responding"
Just use another DNS server then
@@AdityaPrasad007 if everyone is using Google's DNS / Cloudflare's DNS, seems like a single point of failure. (Yes I realize they use anycast, but Google / Cloudflare still administers the systems that anycast.)
"In case you don't know what DNS is, maybe because you had friends in college"
I know what dns is and I feel personally attacked
I somewhat knew what DNA is, and somewhat had friends in college. Pick a side, I recommend it
Lol I'm in high school and me and my friends know what DNS is and some of us even host servers
Same. Not so funny. Especially for someone who earns his money through a product developed by nerds ://///
Same
I don't have a friend in college but still don't know what DNS is. I fell attacked.
