I had to buy Billy Joel's album The Stranger in 1977 after hearing 'Just The Way You Are' while driving home from work, I was so mesmerized by that song🎶
Long Island in the house, Billy Joel - can't go wrong! "Vienna" "New York State of Mind" - everything he's put out is great & he literally IS the piano man! I think he plays better than Elton, better than anyone! You have to see him go off on the piano, one hand, cigarette hanging out of his mouth - he makes it look so easy!
Billy’s rabbit hole is one of the most vast you’ll stumble into. And he never disappoints. You’ll get a lot of viewers and endless pleasure. Ready? Let’s go!
I suggest you do “Piano Man” next. It’s what made Billy Joel a household name. Most of us had never heard his music before that but we wanted more, and he’s delivered for half a century. The official video, with him playing in a bar, was shot years later but it uses the original studio version for the audio, so you get the best of both worlds. (He has very well done and entertaining videos.) The other two I recommend to follow that up are “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant” and “New York State of Mind”. That last one should also be from The Old Grey Whistle Test. Fantastic performance!
Billy Joel is a fabulous songwriter, a terrific singer and fantastic piano player! This was one of his more low energy songs, but it's wonderful songwriting. He has a LOT of GREAT songs! I would really like you to react next to New York State of Mind also live from The Old Grey Whistle Test. He has too many great songs to name them all, but among the best are Piano Man, Goodnight Saigon, Just The Way You Are, Scenes From An Italian Restaurant, Honesty, Only The Good Die Young, I've Loved These Days, Big Shot, For The Longest Time, Pressure, Vienna, The Stranger, Uptown Girl, Anthony's Song (Movin' Out), My Life, Allentown, Say Goodbye To Hollywood, Root Beer Rag, and so many more. The song, For The Longest Time, really shows off his singing because it's an a capella multi-part harmony, and on the studio version, he sings all the parts. Root Beet Rag is an original Ragtime song that he wrote that really shows how great of a piano player he is! He's just one of the most talented musicians ever!
Billy Joel is one of those performers who is equally comfortable doing ballads or up-tempo songs, also an exceptional songwriter. One that I would suggest to you would be "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant".
One of my favorites by Billy Joel is "Italian Restaurant" So much going on in that song. It's a great ballad, remembering high school and graduation and life after. The tempo changes are great. Lots of really tight musicians putting it all together. Check that one out, if you like Billy Joel.
Yep, here I am doing it again. The rabbit hole. I am listening to The Stranger which is the album that this song is on, along with the song I mentioned above. I really think this was the album that put Billy Joel on the musical map as it were. Every song is great!!
Scenes from an Italian Restaurant. Give a listen/ watch the live 14-minute version of Low Spark of High Heeled Boys. Or Glad/ Freedom Rider. Also from the same live concert and about 14 minutes long. Both songs feature sax Guru Chris Wood. Studio versions aren't but about 1/4 as long. Extra time is in very long solos. 🤠🐂
As fantastic as this song is, Billy’s got dozens as good or better. Several have already been suggested, to which I would add just these few: We didn’t Start the Fire, Vienna, Scenes From an Italian Restaurant, Lullaby, River of Dreams, New York State of Mind and Downeaster Alexa…..the list goes on and on. I’d also suggest studio versions before moving to live performances. Thanks for your reaction.
PART II 😁 OHHH I see a Burton Cummings reaction! He is in my Top 10 favorite male singers and is the lead singer of The Guess Who. NO TIME by them is AWESOME as a ton of their songs! ☯️☮️
He's nice, but for this song he was a lot nicer on the studio version. He looked a little stewed singing this song, truthfully, and that's also a peril of watching Live versions from back then -- you don't get their best effort a lot because they're too high
Another beautiful tender lovesong for you SUGGESTION: NORA JONES - COME AWAY WITH ME (OFF. VIDEO) 56 mln views/from 15 years ago. THANKS!!!!! ENJOY!!!!!
Hi Billy's song New York state of mind live at the old gray whistle test is one of the best live performances I've ever seen. It is a must to watch

Live version of Scene From a Italian Restaurant is a great performance.
Not just a love song but a love-hate song - she cuts like a knife, etc. listen closely.
PART II 😁 OHHH I see a Burton Cummings reaction! He is in my Top 10 favorite male singers and is the lead singer of The Guess Who.
NO TIME by them is AWESOME as a ton of their songs! ☯️☮️
Summer Highland Falls is a great older song like this from him.

Downeaster Alexa
The Billy Joel rabbit hole is pretty deep..
Downeaster Alexa.... yes! Most dont know this song, it sadly never got the playtime it deserved...
Sitting out on my deck having an after supper coffee.. Beautiful evening in NB 😀

The original studio recording is much much better. That's always the case.
