Favorite rock album of all time (hard/metal) is Rainbow Rising. How I really got into Dio (aside from knowing he did Holy Diver). Can't do lists since I have only listened to the Dio era albums, but my favorite Rainbow Dio era song is actually "Rainbow Eyes". But yeah "Stargazer" is a masterpiece.

Can't argue with your list, my #1 probably the same as yours. Two you don't mention that I rate highly are Temple of the King and Can't Happen Here. The band is great from start to finish but, the Dio era Rsinbow is one of the greatest hard rock bands of all time.
I realised these last few years that Rainbow with DIO was the best band in the world from late '75 to the end of 1978. The DIO albums did Not sell well in the U.S.. Its rumored that Rainbow Rising sold a whopping 7 million copies alone in the 8 years Rainbow existed from 1976 to 1984.

Huge fan of Rainbow. Graham Bonnet's one album, Down to Earth, was really ahead of its time with shorter, more pop oriented songs. Graham's vocals are just spectacular... RJD was incredible... RIP.
I'd say there were just 2 "pop oriented songs" on Down To Earth, Since You've Been Gone and All Night Long. (Both were top 5 singles in the UK.) The rest of the album is straight ahead hard rock.

Interesting list of Rainbow songs. I agree with some of the songs, but my list would be different anyway. I start from the beginning instead from 10. 1. Tarot woman (has always been my number one, will always be), 2. The Gates of Babylon (complete master tune), 3. Sixteenth century greensleeves (specially live), 4. Lady of the Lake (great riff), 5. Eyes of the World. 6. The Light in the Black (the guitar solo), 7. Death alley driver, 8. Too late for tears (actually great with Doogie White), 9. Stargazer, 10. Can´t let you go (you mentioned Jealous lover, sure great, but here Joe Lynn Turner shows more of his capacity as a singer). But pick the greatest Rainbow songs as a top ten list, not the easiest thing to do, being a huge Rainbow fan, but this could be my list anyway. I would have liked to put The Shed, The Man on the Silver mountain and Do you close your eyes on the list, as well.

I was fortunate enough to see Rainbow twice in the early 80's and they are one of the absolute best. Somehow I completely missed Rainbow Rising until 5-6 years ago. An incredible album.
Two of my favourite Rainbow songs are LLRNR's Rainbow Eyes (so beautiful and a huge regret we didn't get to hear it live!), and the live DP cover, Mistreated. Holy hell, what a beautiful cover sung by Ronnie James Dio! I swear Ronnie sang it better than David Coverdale, bless them both!
Stargazer is my favorite rainbow song and favorite song of all time. But personally a song that always stuck out to me was rainbow eyes i think it is dios best vocals and is just magical
I first heard Rainbow back in the MTV days and quite quickly passed them by. “Stone Cold” or was it Ice Cold? Just didn’t do it for me. I remember my friends and I scoffing at Joe Lynn Turners poses during that song. Quickly dismissed the band and it was on to Rush, Zeppelin, Skynyrd, etc. Couple years ago I started to intentionally research and dig into the progressive rock bands of the early 70’s (that I had somehow missed) which led to a thorough listening of Deep Purple arriving at the first 3 studio albums of Rainbow...here in 2020. Now I get it - about 40 years later. Better late then never I guess! Thanks for the excellent TH-cam videos! You turned me onto another band I had never given a listen to, Uriah Heep.

Can't argue with that and Stargazer gives me some great memories of me and my best mate playing his tennis racket and me pretending to play Cozy Powell drums when we were kids. Makes me emotional when I listen to it. Inspired me and my mate to play lead and bass guitar and start our own band. We just loved the Purple stuff and all the bands that developed from it.

Obviously no surprise to anyone here that Stargazer is universally admired. Those in the know consider it on par with anything as one of the greatest rock songs ever recorded. As a huge Rainbow fan I am consistently dismayed that I have never heard this masterpiece played on the radio!!! Not once! Earlier this year I had an email exchange from a DJ from one of the top classic rock stations in the country in my home market near New Jersey. It was around the anniversary of Cozy Powell's death and I said why don't you play a tribute to Cozy....and I mentioned Stargazer, Gates of Babylon, Kill The King and Slow an Easy. He responded by saying that "99% of his audience has never heard of Cozy Powell or any of the songs I mentioned". I responded by saying " because you never fucking play them!!!" Amusingly, a few weeks later I was visiting the Bay Area, and the San Jose classic rock station played Slow an Easy two days in a row. So it was great to hear Cozy's powerhouse drums on the radio. Anyway, why isn't Stargazer on the same level as Stairway To Heaven or Kashmir? It is a MASTERPIECE. It features among the greatest guitarists, vocalists and drummers at the height of their powers, plus the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra! It brings a tear to my eye every time.

Just found your channel - it seems we are kindred spirits as far as music goes. I appreciated that you get emotional about the loss of Dio. I knew of Dio, but didn't listen to his music until i saw him open for Iron Maiden in Chicago somewhere in the 2000s. I really grew to admire and respect his central role in the development of metal. IMO, he is the greatest metal vocalist of all time. And he was the heart of the genre. Stargazer is my favorite metal song of all time. As far as Rainbow songs go, The Gates of Babylon is my #2. I am a fan of the vast majority of your favourites but iam also cross-genre's too,and love anything quirky,and they dont come any quirkier than Bowie,apart from maybe Iggy. Maybe you're not a fan i dont know but in his catalogue,he had some great rockers.
Surprise you skipped Catch The Rainbow. So beautiful! The guitar on On Stage is some of his best and Dio's. My #2 following Stargazer. Aerial....Dougie White was so respectful of the original Line Up. That recording was my favorite following the Dio recordings.

Forty odd years later I still have the same feelings as you about Stargazer.I remember when I played it first time as fourteen year old kid I must have played it six or seven times over before I even got to A Light in the Black and then I just gave up and just kept on playing the whole side over and over.I absolutely love Rainbow Eyes and Temple of the King and I see them as inspiration which led to Blackmore ‘s Night which I (sorry metaheads)absolutely love.When Blackmore brought in Bonnet and Turner some magic was lost.I would have loved Dio to have a crack at Eyes of the World.
As time passes Stargazer proves to be one of the best rock songs ever.. It is masterpiece, epic..

Can't argue with your list, my #1 probably the same as yours. Two you don't mention that I rate highly are Temple of the King and Can't Happen Here.
The band is great from start to finish but, the Dio era Rsinbow is one of the greatest hard rock bands of all time.
I realised these last few years that Rainbow with DIO was the best band in the world from late '75 to the end of 1978.
The DIO albums did Not sell well in the U.S.. Its rumored that Rainbow Rising sold a whopping 7 million copies alone in the 8 years Rainbow existed from 1976 to 1984.

Huge fan of Rainbow. Graham Bonnet's one album, Down to Earth, was really ahead of its time with shorter, more pop oriented songs. Graham's vocals are just spectacular... RJD was incredible... RIP.
I'd say there were just 2 "pop oriented songs" on Down To Earth, Since You've Been Gone and All Night Long. (Both were top 5 singles in the UK.) The rest of the album is straight ahead hard rock.

Interesting list of Rainbow songs. I agree with some of the songs, but my list would be different anyway. I start from the beginning instead from 10.

Lady of the Lake (great riff), 5. Eyes of the World. 6. The Light in the Black (the guitar solo), 7. Death alley driver, 8. Too late for tears (actually great with Doogie White), 9. Stargazer, 10. Can´t let you go (you mentioned Jealous lover, sure great, but here Joe Lynn Turner shows more of his capacity as a singer). But pick the greatest Rainbow songs as a top ten list, not the easiest thing to do, being a huge Rainbow fan, but this could be my list anyway. I would have liked to put The Shed, The Man on the Silver mountain and Do you close your eyes on the list, as well.

I was fortunate enough to see Rainbow twice in the early 80's and they are one of the absolute best. Somehow I completely missed Rainbow Rising until 5-6 years ago. An incredible album.
Two of my favourite Rainbow songs are LLRNR's Rainbow Eyes (so beautiful and a huge regret we didn't get to hear it live!), and the live DP cover, Mistreated. Holy hell, what a beautiful cover sung by Ronnie James Dio! I swear Ronnie sang it better than David Coverdale, bless them both!
Stargazer is my favorite rainbow song and favorite song of all time. But personally a song that always stuck out to me was rainbow eyes i think it is dios best vocals and is just magical
I first heard Rainbow back in the MTV days and quite quickly passed them by. “Stone Cold” or was it Ice Cold? Just didn’t do it for me. I remember my friends and I scoffing at Joe Lynn Turners poses during that song. Quickly dismissed the band and it was on to Rush, Zeppelin, Skynyrd, etc. Couple years ago I started to intentionally research and dig into the progressive rock bands of the early 70’s (that I had somehow missed) which led to a thorough listening of Deep Purple arriving at the first 3 studio albums of Rainbow...here in 2020. Now I get it - about 40 years later. Better late then never I guess! Thanks for the excellent TH-cam videos! You turned me onto another band I had never given a listen to, Uriah Heep.

How about a top 10 of Heart?
Obviously no surprise to anyone here that Stargazer is universally admired. Those in the know consider it on par with anything as one of the greatest rock songs ever recorded. As a huge Rainbow fan I am consistently dismayed that I have never heard this masterpiece played on the radio!!! Not once! Earlier this year I had an email exchange from a DJ from one of the top classic rock stations in the country in my home market near New Jersey. It was around the anniversary of Cozy Powell's death and I said why don't you play a tribute to Cozy....and I mentioned Stargazer, Gates of Babylon, Kill The King and Slow an Easy. He responded by saying that "99% of his audience has never heard of Cozy Powell or any of the songs I mentioned". I responded by saying " because you never fucking play them!!!" Amusingly, a few weeks later I was visiting the Bay Area, and the San Jose classic rock station played Slow an Easy two days in a row. So it was great to hear Cozy's powerhouse drums on the radio. Anyway, why isn't Stargazer on the same level as Stairway To Heaven or Kashmir? It is a MASTERPIECE. It features among the greatest guitarists, vocalists and drummers at the height of their powers, plus the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra! It brings a tear to my eye every time.

Just found your channel - it seems we are kindred spirits as far as music goes. I appreciated that you get emotional about the loss of Dio. I knew of Dio, but didn't listen to his music until i saw him open for Iron Maiden in Chicago somewhere in the 2000s. I really grew to admire and respect his central role in the development of metal. IMO, he is the greatest metal vocalist of all time. And he was the heart of the genre. Stargazer is my favorite metal song of all time. As far as Rainbow songs go, The Gates of Babylon is my #2. Surprise you skipped Catch The Rainbow. So beautiful! The guitar on On Stage is some of his best and Dio's. My #2 following Stargazer. Aerial....Dougie White was so respectful of the original Line Up. That recording was my favorite following the Dio recordings.

Forty odd years later I still have the same feelings as you about Stargazer.I remember when I played it first time as fourteen year old kid I must have played it six or seven times over before I even got to A Light in the Black and then I just gave up and just kept on playing the whole side over and over.I absolutely love Rainbow Eyes and Temple of the King and I see them as inspiration which led to Blackmore ‘s Night which I (sorry metaheads)absolutely love.When Blackmore brought in Bonnet and Turner some magic was lost.I would have loved Dio to have a crack at Eyes of the World.
