I find it fascinating that even though Larry emphasizes at the start that he's not saying that any of the albums are bad and that he does say that he likes them all, some people still razz on him for where he places particular albums rather than just accepting that he has his own tastes and then telling us what their tastes are. People need to recognize that every one of us came to the music of Black Sabbath in completely different ways, at different times and in different circumstances as well as recognizing that one may have been listening to specific LPs for 3, 9, 12, 25, 39, 49 or whatever years and therefore we each have a combination of reasons why we would rank each album where we do. Having a different viewpoint from Larry isn't an excuse to lambast him for not sharing one's view; rather, having a different viewpoint and sharing one's own thoughts and ranks actually is what should make comments sections great places to share what one has to say. His video is a good place to begin the discussion.
1. Paranoid 2. Master Of Reality 3. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath 4. Sabotage 5. Black Sabbath 6. Vol. 4 7. Technical Ecstasy 8. Never Say Die Every album of theirs released in 70s was great.
Nice relaxing review Larry! And great choices both on ranking the albums and rating the covers! Thank you so much for sharing this with us! Hope Mollie gets a break soon! Hugs to you both!! 🤗🤗🤗
You know what, Larry? I listened to every single by Black Sabbath, and they're awesome. I'm getting two or three of their albums on Record Store Day tomorrow. I'm getting albums by other bands too tomorrow as well besides Black Sabbath. Thx for the ranks of their albums, Larry!
I favour "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" as the best because (at the time) it was a progressive heavy metal album (Wakeman's keyboards, the final orchestral string track, etc.). "Sabotage" was a retreat from that back to their more conventional sound.
psbarrow - agreed! it is a toss up, between sab bloody/black sab/ paranoid/sabatoge...if i had to choose a favorite; you are correct sir. picking a favorite sab song/album is nearly impossible! they are the best! waylon jennings, aint too shabby either!
1. Master of Reality 2. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath 3. Paranoid 4. Vol. 4 5. Black Sabbath 6. Sabotage 7. Never Say Die 8. Technical Ecstasy (Even though it’s my least favorite I still really enjoy it)
I haven’t listened to Sabotage, Technical Ecstasy, or Never Say Die yet. But at least I have a top 5. So here we go, album ranking... I’ll also put my ratings of the albums and my favorite song after the title. 5. Black Sabbath (7.4/10) [N.I.B] 4. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (8.4/10) [Sabbath Bloody Sabbath] 3. Vol. 4 (8.6/10) [Supernaut] 2. Master of Reality (10/10) [I can’t choose a favorite] 1. Paranoid (10/10) [War Pigs] Aaaaand I actually have a number 0. My favorite Black Sabbath album is Heaven and Hell with Dio on vocals. My favorite song on there could be any of the first five songs because they are all equally awesome.
First six albums of Sabbath are all 10/10 for me personally and essential listening for any heavy rock fan. Besides the heaviness I also love the mellow and progessive tracks they did on those albums
My top 1. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath 2. Master of Reality 3.Paranoid 4. Black Sabbath 5.Vol 4 6.Sabotage 7.Technical Ecstasy 8.Never Say Die My Favorite is Heaven & Hell but it is of the 80s
Crank up that Never Say Die album! It's funny how over the years we Black Sabbath fans rediscover something we may have missed, for me it was Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Sabotage. Those were 2 albums I had not purchased in the 70's. Purchased them a few years ago and Sabotage just blew me away! I was listening to it and saying to myself " How did I ever miss out on such a Great album as this!" I can't say that about Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, time to spin it again, give it another listen too! I hope you have a copy of "13" it's a masterpiece! 13 is my all time favorite Sabbath Album!
Thank you so much for this video! I love hearing you talk about bands, and I’ve been on a sabbath binge as of late, so the timing is perfect. Here’s my ranking - 8. Never Say Die! 7. Technical Ecstasy 6. Black Sabbath 5. Master of Reality 4. Vol. 4 3. Paranoid 2. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath 1. Sabotage The top 6 are completely interchangeable, but that’s how I’m feeling right now.
Absolutely love Sabbath - all eras! 8. Technical Ecstasy (Pretty bland for the most part. A few good tracks) 7. Never Say Die! (Has it’s great moments and bad moments) 6. Black Sabbath (more of a blues/jazz sound. A great debut) 5. Vol. 4 (a great album. Definitely the weirdest of the first 6) 4. Paranoid (A classic. What else can you say?) 3. Master of Reality (the classic Sabbath sound) 2. Sabotage (Almost as good as SBS) 1. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (one of my all time favorite albums, a masterpiece)
Technical Ecstasy is my number one favourite album, I give it a 10/10. Almost every Black Sabbath fan I know says she’s gone is a horrible track, and it’s not worth listening, I freaking love it. I also agree with you very much on what you said for Never Say Die, A Hard Road is in my top ten favourite songs.
I totally agree with your decision to only discuss the first 8 albums. Like yourself I have little interest in Black Sabbath without O O as singer. That's no swipe at the other singers it's just an affirmation that Ozzy's voice was crucial to their sound. Great review. I also agree that 'Sabotage' is their best album and 'Symptom of the Universe' their best song. I would put 'Volume 4' much higher though (mainly because 'Snowblind' is on it). Bill Ward was a great singer too. If only he and Ozzy had sung harmonies.
They are both good albums and definitely underrated but just remember that Larry tends to get a little carried away at times 😉 They fall well short of Heaven & Hell and Mob Rules ..... plus a few other post-Ozzy and solo Ozzy albums.
1. Volume 4 2. Sabbath bloody sabbath 3. Sabotage 4. Debut album 5. Paranoid 6. Master of reality 7. Never say die 8. Technical ecstasy I really think they were at the top of their game in vol 4, sabbath bloody sabbath and sabotage, they started experimenting alot in those albums and it works so well imo
I think your list here is about the same as mine. The top 2 is right for me and MOR is where I'd have it.I think a lot of people overrate that one but as far as heavy goes it's probably the heaviest sounding one of all.Maybe the reason some people lean more towards that ?
I felt like I was the only one who thought volume 4 was my least favorite out the ozzy era. I don't hate it at all but it never made such an impact like the other lps. Might have to keep listening to it, might grow on me. Technical Ecstasy is such an underrated album, a hidden gem, on my top 3 BS albums. I used to dislike that lp not because I had listened to it, but it was like that one song on that one album you always skipped because you thought it sucked, and so did many other people, but one day I actually listened to it and I was stuck listening to the first half on the album for a while. It was that good. It may not have been heavy, but they executed the progressive inputs very well. If you hate technical ecstasy, I highly suggest you give the Steve Wilson remix a listen. Though I've been bumping technical ecstasy before that remix came out, I definitely like his version more. Packs a lot of punch. It's an album screaming to get out, and I hope people start giving technical ecstasy the praise it deserves.
My ranking of the original 8 Sabbath albums is as follows: 8. Technical Ecstasy 7. Never Say Die 6. Vol. 4 5. Master of Reality 4. Paranoid 3. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath 2. Black Sabbath 1. Sabotage One and two are completely interchangeable, but this is how I'm ranking them for now.
Although I do enjoy all of their albums, I’ll only rank the Ozzy albums to keep in the spirit of the video. Ranking: Music 1. Paranoid 2. Sabotage 3. Master of Reality 4. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath 5. Black Sabbath 6. Technical Ecstasy 7. Vol. 4 8. Never Say Die Ranking: Artwork 1. Technical Ecstasy 2. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath 3. Black Sabbath 4. Vol. 4 5. Sabotage 6. Paranoid 7. Master of Reality 8. Never Say Die The artwork for Dehumanizer and Forbidden are probably my 2 favorites
No offense my man but I believe that you might hold a slightly ignorant view. You’re depriving yourself of good music, you’re right, Dio isn’t really black sabbath but it still has the same feel and frankly Heaven and Hell is a great album, in my opinion. However in that regard I’m slightly ignorant myself in the sense that I have only listened to Heaven and Hell
Heaven and Hell is 1 of the best heavy metal albums ever recorded and I'm more of an Ozzy guy. Mob Rules had 2-3 great songs but not as good top to bottom, still an album or cd worth having.
By the way, it is Ozzy that sings "Solitude" on the "Master of reality" album. I too wondered for some years because he sounds so un-Ozzy like and the vocal is pretty exquisite. I love Ozzy's vocals on the first 6 LPs though. He gets pelters for his singing but for me, he was one of the top vocalists in heavy rock back in the day. And although he did write the lyrics to "Black Sabbath," "Who are you" and "The writ," lyrics were not generally his sphere. His expertise was putting melodies to the music and for ozzyfying the lyrics of Geezer Butler to the extent that so many people think he was actually the lyricist. When I hear Roger Daltrey sing, I always think of Pete Townshend. I think of his concepts. Roger, in my view, never "Daltryfied" Townshend's lyrics, but Ozzy ozzyfies Geezer's lyrics, kind of the same way Ringo Ringofied the lyrics of Lennon or McCartney.
I think you're thinking of Hand Of Doom as far as that part where the drums get even more heavy. When Ozzy sings "You're having a good time baby, but that won't last". That might be my favorite moment on a Sabbath album. Btw, I'm Master Of Reality, as far as a favorite album. Into The Void, Symptom Of The Universe, and Children Of The Grave as far as riffs.
I forgot to rank the album covers!(Oops!) 8. Technical Ecstasy 7. Never Say Die 6. Paranoid 5. Master of Reality 4. Vol. 4 3. Sabotage 2. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath 1. Self Titled
Can you rank The Dio albums too? Might as well rank his solo work and his work in Rainbow I know you're not a huge fan of his but it's definitely worth a shot if you ask me.
I’ve just started collecting Sabbath records. This video came at just the right time 👍🎸 I think Paranoid is the best and I have a soft spot for Never Say Die, even though people (and Ozzy himself!) bash that record
Ben, it's cool that you're just getting into Sabbath. I'm 59 and remember how exciting it was to pick up the latest album (vinyl of course) back in the 70's. I wouldn't read too many of these rankings because you need to listen to every song and how they speak to you. Then make your own ranking. I remember when I absolutely hated Never Say Die. But decades later, it's one of my favorites. So, I could give you my fav's but mine don't matter. Only yours matter. Have fun!!!
they called sabotage 'the lawyer' album cause like many bands in that day they got ripped off. By the record companys to the agents etc... Sabbath like many naïve bands in the day realized they were getting ripped off for years....then..came the legal fights, hence this was the 'lawyer album'
steve o b - oddly enough, that song has been playing in my head for a couple of months now; not one of my favorite sabbath songs, but catchy nonetheless...
steve o b - oddly enough, that song has been playing in my head for a couple of months now; not one of my favorite sabbath songs, but catchy nonetheless...
Black Sabbath are one of my all time favourite bands! My favourite albums in order are: 1. The Headless Cross 2. Volume 4 3. Master of Reality 4. Heaven & Hell 5. Born Again 6. Paranoid 7. Black Sabbath 8. Sabotage 9. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath 10. Mob Rules 11. Seventh Star 12. Dehumanizer 13. 13 14. Technical Ecstasy 15. The Devil You Know 16. Forbidden 17. Never Say Die 18. Tyr 19. The Eternal Idol (both versions) 20. Cross Purposes
8:08 hear Satan snoring! Aah, I see there was an editing mistake :D My album run: 8. Technical Ecstasy 7. Yeah, Vol. 4 almost also 6. Masters Of Reality 5. Never Say Die 4. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath 3. Black Sabbath (used to be #1) 2. Sabotage 1. Paranoid But if we were to include post-Ozzy stuff, Gillan's Born Again woukd have been at #2 ^^
Thanks for that beating heart Larry ❤️👌Didn't catch Sabbath live, but Ozzy in 2007. Amazing how a guy who can't work out his TV remote control and walks at a turtle speed has so much energy live :D Long live Ozzy!
1. Vol. 4- Another underrated album from Sabbath, Wheels of Confusion is probably Tony Iommi’s greatest guitar solo. 2. Master of Reality- Every riff from the album is god tier, most guitarist wish they can right a killer riff like Into the Void or Sweet Leaf. 3. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath- Sabbaths most creative album from the Ozzy era. 4. Sabotage- Their most underrated album from the Ozzy era, The Writ has a great intro. 5. Black Sabbath- The album that started it all, NIB is probably the greatest metal song ever written. 6. Technical Ecstasy- Another album many people hate because there was no direction with the album buts it’s still fantastic. 7. Never Say Die- Many people hate it cuz the members didn’t know what direction they we’re going but I think it’s fantastic. 8. Paranoid- I love the album but most songs off the album is overplayed.
Sabbath are one of my all time favourite bands!! 1. Master of Reality 2. Paranoid 3. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath/Sabotage(I can't rank one lower than the other) 4. Vol. 4. 5. Self titled 6. Never Say Die 7. Technical Ecstasy
My favorite 1. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath 2. Never Say Die (My first Black Sabbath lp, my godfather got it for my bday, it just came out. My favorite track was Johnny Blade. ) 3. Master's of Reality 4. Paranoid 5. Sabotage 6. Black Sabbath 7. Technical Ecstasy 8. Vol. 4 My favorite song: Killing Yourself To Live...
Nice to see a personal and original choice of the albums. Many of these are rather similar. Hopefully some people will get a few of these albums a better chance now. Although I would recommend to give the rest of the Black Sabbath cannon a chance too. It is not the same but it is not meant to be. I think all eras of Black Sabbath have their songs worth checking out. Even "Heaven And Hell - The Devil You Know" and "13".
1. Paranoid (Electric Funeral) 2. Black Sabbath (Warning) 3. Sabotage (Symptom of the Universe) 4. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (A National Acrobat) 5. Master of Reality (Into The Void) 6. Vol. 4 (Wheels of Confusion) 7. Technical Ecstasy (You Won't Change Me) 8. Never Say Die! (Never Say Die)
awesome video! A unique ranking for sure, you can really tell you gave it alot of thought. My ranking is as follows, note that I still really enjoy the bottom 2, but i had to put the others ahead. #8 Technical ecstasy #7 Never say die #6 Sabotage (but I love it) 10/10 #5 Volume 4 #4 Paranoid #3 Master of Reality #2 Sabbath Bloody Sabbath #1 Black Sabbath
I love your take on Black Sabbath! I’m not alone!!! For anyone who has reservations about Black Sabbath because they are not fans of heavy metal, give the period from Sabbath Bloody Sabbath to Never Say Die a try. You may be pleasantly surprised!
This is my list (Including the albums without Ozzy Osbourne) 19. Forbidden 18. TYR 17. Cross Purposes 16. Dehumanizer 15. Headless Cross 14. Seventh Star 13. The Eternal Idol 12. Born Again 11. Technical Ecstasy 10. Never Say Die! 9. 13 8. Vol. 4 7. Mob Rules 6. Black Sabbath 5. Sabotage 4. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath 3. Heaven And Hell 2. Master Of Reality 1. Paranoid
Great choice Larry , although I think your vol 4 position is questionable. I tend to flip flop between paranoid and sabotage for top two albums . While I’m here can I say you never mention your Canadian band frank Marino and mahogany rush . Do you like them ? Cheers Larry
I know Never Say Doe is underrated, but it's not better than Vol. 4. No chance. Tech ex and Nsd are always at the back end of the catalog for most fans. Dude, Supernaut? Snowblind? Are you nuts? Tomorrows Dream?
1. Paranoid 2. Master Of Reality 3. Black Sabbath 4. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath 5. Sabotage 6. Vol. 4 7. Never Say Die! 8. Technical Ecstasy (though I need to get into it more)
I find it fascinating that even though Larry emphasizes at the start that he's not saying that any of the albums are bad and that he does say that he likes them all, some people still razz on him for where he places particular albums rather than just accepting that he has his own tastes and then telling us what their tastes are.
Totally agree with you

Great video larey, you never disappoint.
4:49 Back Street Kids has such a underrated riff
Agreed
You know what, Larry? I listened to every single by Black Sabbath, and they're awesome. I'm getting two or three of their albums on Record Store Day tomorrow. I'm getting albums by other bands too tomorrow as well besides Black Sabbath. Thx for the ranks of their albums, Larry!
Good video. I've seen some sabbath at Walmart for $5. I got paranoid yesterday. I'll have to pick up the others
i always thought megalomenia is like the bohemian rhapsody of heavy metal
It was about time for some Sabbath, Mr. Studmuffin! Thanks for your high quality entertainment, as always! (First Comment)
I LOVE the first Sabbath LP.
I'm 65 and I've been around a bit and sabotage os my favorite to it was my favorite when I first heard it still is.
Respect.

I enjoyed this, thank you. I particularly like the last 2 albums being talked up as I explore the catalogue. You've helped open my ears!
Technical Ecstasy is my number one favourite album, I give it a 10/10. Almost every Black Sabbath fan I know says she’s gone is a horrible track, and it’s not worth listening, I freaking love it. I agree Sabbath were at the top of their game around Sabbath Bloody Sabbath; Sabotage and Volume4.

No offense my man but I believe that you might hold a slightly ignorant view. However in that regard I’m slightly ignorant myself in the sense that I have only listened to Heaven and Hell
I never got into anything post Dio and every time I've tried to it just does not sound like Black Sanneh... to each his own

I absolutely adore planet caravan
*Really dig all your lists folks! Seriously!
My favourite is Heaven And Hell, sorry, and Volume 4
I forgot to rank the album covers!(Oops!)
8. Technical Ecstasy

6. Paranoid
5. Master of Reality
4. Vol. 4
3. Sabotage

Always thought Paranoid was a tereible album cover....debut? CLASSIC
Can you rank The Dio albums too? Might as well rank his solo work and his work in Rainbow I know you're not a huge fan of his but it's definitely worth a shot if you ask me.
Never say die is a really cool album. Glad you re-evaluated this.
Vol 4 is basically cocaine in audio form

Have fun!!!
@@biffmalibu9488 I will reply:
PEOPLE GOING NOWHERE,TAKEN FOR A RIDE!
Sabotage has always been my favorite! You have good taste sir.
they called sabotage 'the lawyer' album cause like many bands in that day they got ripped off. By the record companys to the agents etc... Sabbath like many naïve bands in the day realized they were getting ripped off for years....then..came the legal fights, hence this was the 'lawyer album'

@@TheJayson8899 Misplaced audio track.
You could interchange the first 4 albums. Those are the best for me.

I love your take on Black Sabbath! I’m not alone!!! For anyone who has reservations about Black Sabbath because they are not fans of heavy metal, give the period from Sabbath Bloody Sabbath to Never Say Die a try. You may be pleasantly surprised!
Yeah I prefer Ozzy Osborne than Ronnie Dio.

I love Air Dance from Never Say Die. In fact Never Say Die used to be my least favorite. It's really grown on me over the years.

Gotta give those 2 last ones with Ozzy a listen :)
Great choice Larry , although I think your vol 4 position is questionable. I tend to flip flop between paranoid and sabotage for top two albums . While I’m here can I say you never mention your Canadian band frank Marino and mahogany rush . Do you like them ? Cheers Larry
Not a fan but liked what I heard.
Meglomania is sooo good
I rank them 1. Sabotage 2. Black Sabbath 3. Master Of Reality 4. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath 5. Vol. 4 6. Paranoid 7. Never Say Die 8. Technical Ecstasy
steve mcnary interesting order!
I know Never Say Doe is underrated, but it's not better than Vol. 4. No chance. Tech ex and Nsd are always at the back end of the catalog for most fans. Dude, Supernaut? Snowblind? Are you nuts? Tomorrows Dream?

4. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
5. Sabotage
