I really like to think of skills from a bird's eye view and look at the ways that it fits into the whole ecosystem of Path of Exile. In the first episode of The Educated Exile I take a magnifying glass to Toxic Rain and explain everything from how to level it, to how to scale it, to how to look into how other folks are also playing it to get ideas. I want to give you all the tools to create your own builds with your own twists on them.

i could also use some clarification on the damage calculations.
i see many people use increased projectile damage, but what does that increase exactly?
- the initial damage of the arrows?
- is that initial damage also chaos or physical?
- does it also increase the chaos dot since that one was caused by a projectile ability?
ive seen the debate attack speed vs projectile speed. i was told projectile speed is more important but i dont understand why. sure, its neat if the arrows find their mark faster, but at the end of a day the amount of arrows in the air and on the ground matter, not how fast they got there. right?
how does increasing the chaos damage actually work? there is a flat initial (chaos?) damage on impact, and then the dot right? depending on the numbers what is most benefitial?
- first increasing the flat chaos damage or the flat chaos dot so all the % increases have a larger base to work with?
- will increasing the dot give the most benefit cause flat increases are too little?
there are so many unknowns i could find no answer anywhere to. your video was the first to go in the right direction.

thank you for this in depth video. i just started playing poe a couple days ago and the guide im following is for toxic rain. theres a lot i didnt understand and i was kinda having fun being bad at a new game lol but this video helps tons! im really looking forward to experimenting on my own now

Just wanted to say thanks for explaining the theory behind how you chose the nodes to visit, since as you know 3.16 saw a significant shuffling of nodes and many you show here no longer exist where they were when you made this video.
By explaing the 'why' as well as the 'how' I found it easy to apply the 'search' technique you showed to discover where the nodes can now be found .. had you simply supplied a 'click this, click that, click the other' guide I think as a player of only 3 weeks I'd have struggled to adapt.

I've played the game since the closed beta, literally only time I made my own "builds" was back then, since we did not really have any good resources. Nowadays I just like picking a build made by someone else and go with that.
I like to think I have a fairly good understanding on how the game works and how the things in the background, but man do I not like PoBwarrioring (most I've done is recently is just to go to poeninja, click on a skill gem and then open the passive tree heatmap and follow that, with some very minor edits. lol)
This video made me want to actually reconsider my stance for the next league and see what I can do with little more time investment and maybe figure out my own take on some of my favourite playstyles and builds I've tried over the years.

Using info to make my first ever personal skill tree for 3.16 league start (Making it hard on myself with Occultist for the explosions xD). Hopefully wont have to adjust too much with the coming changes but at least right now im getting practice familiarizing what works and what doesnt. Hoping I can find a way to get Forbidden Rite in my build somehow too but I feel like that might be unrealistic, at least Soulrend looks cool too, probably use that xD
First, thanks for the great videos. As an older player(age wise..) I really need to rely on others to help me along. Your video helped me this league. I just hit maps and having a bit of a hard time not dying if I alch them. this is where I usually get stuck. Not sure what to upgrade, when to flip over to perm build. Do I just run lower level maps until I can accumulate items etc. I've been playing since the beginning, but, because of RL , cannot go full send :) I enjoy the game a lot and just looking for an easy build that I can blow stuff up. thanks all **ps picked up a quill rain and we're cruising early now (playing on xbox , so it's basically ssf ) hehe
Sounds like you're on the right path. You'll need to upgrade your character until you can handle the harder content. Keep at it!

This is still one of my favorite skills in the game.
The main pro to Toxic Rain is the ease in crafting an endgame bow imo
preaty much my same build start since league start tho so really hits home nad very efficient i appriciate the options to specialize later if i want. t12s hurting, damage round 10k dot dps tool tip hideout but man~ its so weird but so smooth for now just wish i didnt want to spend so many passive on health and life trying to survive, deressos for endurances and onsl effect has felt fun too with wyrm signs for rmapage haha ez frenzy corrupt etc. what a build. cant wait ot get a despair on hit ring and life on hit ring with the mana crafts i need to test it hard

Pretty much yeah! The big difference you'll want is to anoint Panopticon for better totems but otherwise you're good!
Hey! So this one is distinctly different from other TR builds. They mainly use Caustic Arrow / TR. Not the Cat shooter & popper like you do but can you explain (briefly) why this would be better/ worse than those? I really like this one but I've heard that TR is not really strong in the higher end of the spectrum?
This version clears way better and, in my opinion, has better survival with a life gain on hit vitality watchers eye. I..honestly don't really like the CA clear version very much and I've tried them all. Your mileage may vary!

What are exalts? I thought those were only used to add prefix or suffix to an item?
so i find this very helpful but I'm trying out the ranger build and I cant find toxic rain or mirage archer. I'm level 12 and just killed the warden in the prison. i am also standard atm so am i doing something wrong or did they take these out in 3.16?
You can buy it once you get to merveils caverns.

cheers~ scuffed my league start by doing TR that i know but on raider cause i thought id be easyer but thne i kept skilling for mines playstyle cause mana was murdersome so early hahah. still trying to transition to self cast radier so i have it for hiesting and low map farming once i get setup cause i really wnat ot invest in a more proj based bow/cold skill instead and mannnnnnnnn its SUCH a versitile skill i agree. i think ill do ok but the damage hurtrs ALOT and the money for upper end stuff after clusters is rough esp without levels. i appricate it alot. gives me plenty of ideas and i might just drop caustyic arrow till end game or till self cast. i really should reroll onto a toxic rain trickster miners bwhahaha its sooooooo much cleaner until much much deeper investment so for month 1 farming i could use the patient reaper and such but raider has been super speedy regardless so cheers
I advise going against carcass jack if you want to min max your single target damage, scaling your aoe spreads the pods farther apart leading to less overlap and therefore less dps on single target (this was the nerf in 3.14). This is why conc effect is such an insane gem for TR right now, because not only does it provide more area damage, but also lessens your AOE, allowing for more overlap from your pods.
Yes, I talk about this in the video. Conc effect effectively hard counters the increase aoe from carcass jack to the point that it isn't noticeable and +50% area damage is pretty significant. This has been tested thoroughly and there is a reason why everyone is still using one.
As a tanky alternative Kintsugi is good but you can also just craft an influenced chest with +1 gems to boost your auras.

on my set up with conc effect I go from 18 aoe radius to 15 aoe, and if I put a carcass jack it goes back to 18 radius. That means that the benefit of reduced aoe on conc effect is largely negated.
"+50% area damage is pretty significant"
It's increased area damage, that means the damage difference isn't that significant (because there are already many sources of increased damage). My set up goes from 3.1 mil to 3.3mil. While that's a nice increase, you are most likely losing damage by equipping carcass because of the aoe increase.
And before you say that this is only limited to my set up, you can go onto remi casters pob's (the guy with a very extensive TR guide on the forums), and you'll see very similar results.
So basically, you are equipping a chest that gives you 50-70 life, 9-12 all res, and some es and evasion, and probably losing some damage.
Considering all these points, carcass jack is an absolute waste of a chest slot if you are optimizing your single target damage.
@@ado_4297 Fair enough! However, I would still recommend CJ as a cheap 5c starter chest that will carry you to T16s that you can then double corrupt for a huge boost if you hit something good. I think the balance of clear and damage is still overall going to be some of the best that you're going to get for the value. Once you have two full cluster jewel setups and scaling over 300% increased damage then that 50% wont be much, but initially it's going to be pretty significant.

Is there any way to increase the survivability?
I am currently into yellow tier maps and I am getting one shot so often.... I have 4k life.
If you really want to be tankier I suggest looking into a Trickster version. He gets a lot of defense from ghost shrouds and the combination of Evasion+Energy Shield working together.
did u mention TR treats "projectile damage" stats as "damage over time" stats?
Good catch! I did miss that line. It's traditionally mostly skipped over for other mods but it's a nice to have.
There are a few things you can change for more damage, life.
Run Breathstealer gloves and annoint Atrophy on them and drop those 6 nodes, put the remaining on life nodes or somewhere else.
Use a intuitive leap where you are using Watcher's eye and allocate Charisma, Reduced reservation and Method to Madness, put those points in Skill duration near Potency of Will and finally.. put that watchers eye near Heartseeker node and maybe also get the +1 frenzy charge.

I highly recommend grabbing path of building community fork. Then go to import and put in the link. Pretty much all build guides use pob links so it's worth the setup.
dread essence spam or fossil craft is more cost efficient for TR bow?
It's way easier to get the gem levels with fossils. Essence can get you a nice bow but it's really tough to get those gem levels with it.
What is giving you 5 arrows for Toxic Rain? I look at the TR gem and it says 4 additional arrows, but when I actually use it only 1 hits the ground and blossoms. I ended up watching the video 2 more times and have 3 pages of notes :)
Interesting, you should be seeing 5 blossoms on the ground. Are you not?
@@subtractem 1 keystroke equals 1 arrow up and 1 blossom on the ground. I have Empower, Void Mani, Mirage Archer, Vicious Projectile, and Efficacy as my support gems on a Golem siege Thicket Bow.

@@subtractem I just started a new TR Raider using your suggestions. Wow! I made lvl 45 in 2 days. I was moving the gear from my original into my stash to move over to my new character as I leveled. Well, I found the amulet I was wearing was the problem.. Item Class: Amulets

I dont understand the stat that reduced my 5 arrows to 1. What made it even worse was I was playing with a "Greater Multiple projectile support" in there thinking I had 9 arrows blossoming (totally useless). Thanks to you showing your damage and arrows by mousing over the hotkey, I saw I only had 1 arrow. I pretty much gave up on The Toxic Rain build thinking only streamers could play it correctly. So much Fun to play it the way your video explained it.

I thought TR overlap damage caps at how many projectiles you have. So if you are shooting 5 projectiles with one TR cast, the maximum overlap you have is 5. This seems to be how PoB calculates the damage. Correct me if I’m wrong
As far as I know you can actually overlap more than that number of pods if you have enough duration and enough attack speed. It's just a convenience in PoB to deal with the common situations.

self cast TR before its nerfed next league is something i really hoep to get the peices together to swap to and test for playstyle for sure. espcialy if i can manage asenaths and mana costs cause mannnn ive always wanted to enjoy that soulrend clear instead of CA but thne again :shrug haha
please check your volume when you edit the videos.. keep the overall audio between -6 and 0 db.. in premiere you can right click on the audio track select audio gain than normalize all peaks to 0, and will be better.. for some devices the sound of your videos volume is low
A super noob question, how are you shooting 3 skills in 1 time? or your attack and cast speed is that crazy thats why you can just spam the skills?

funny enough, before the nerfs to deadly ailments adn the general damage nerfs and the nerf to like herald of agony and such, on hit poison toxic rain i wanna say PFs or maybe stil lraiders was big enoguh to be viable atleast on poeninja last leauge and especialy before the added proj aoe appocalypse haha

It's not toxic rain which is fast, it's the ascendancy - Raider.

im just gonna give you this gift, Pathfinder Toxic Rain STR stacker wall of muscles + Replica Albernon maybe a medling + aura for cap res at a good lvl (Grave/Deter/Purity of Fire) you can go either Voices for more wall of muscles or Larges to keep your Chaos DPS bonus over the insane flat dps of Replicas. + Flask mechanic for regen thats crazy. You could do this even without Replica Albernon like how you played and still do crazy amount of DPS then switch them when you amass a fortune.
Or you could even switch to something like Flicker + Paradoxica once you got the Replicas, take out a few chaos DPS and get frenzy charges in the way.

@@subtractem im just saying you should be Pathfinder, for first getting the extra 40% phy to chaos, 2nd the new mechanic of immortality that make you regen 24% max life when hit, and if you add Replica Albernon + STR stacker build items you can get a crazy amount of Chaos DPS so all your chaos damage % notables from Cluster will get boosted a lot more.
And if you addd Medling of Ice + Purity of fire (cause of STR) and Ashes from the Stars and maybe annoint Cleansed Thoughts, you could get to around at least 83% max ele res, and 75% chaos res.
And now you get a crazy amount of LIFE thanks to the Wall of Muscles that give 10% max life + 5% increase STR/ea you get 10 of those, its a 100% max lfie + 50% increased STR.
So the end up result is you having a little less maybe of DPS i dunno cause i didnt have the budget to make it yet, but you are immortal and can facetank almost anything.
So my point is you should do your build but with Flask Immortality + More life, and then switch to anything else when you get your replicas, or just boost it and go all the way.
And the gift part was cause i enjoyed your way of crafting that bow, and explanation of the build.
@@janodiaz92 On hit flat damage does not change how much damage over time you do. It would not benefit this style of build at all.

Playing this build. Awesome damage, but getting one shotted a lot on T14-16. Gameplay is very smooth though.
Yeah in later tier maps you'll have to invest a touch more into defense. If you want to scale back harder into defense temporarily consider a Kintsugi and getting a hunter/elder stygian with life% and flat life to get over 4k. Cheers!
@@subtractem kintsugi smoothes it up, for a chunk of damage. But I like it a lot!
I like this build for dmg, and I like TR, I just don't understand how you're not getting one shot by a phys hit. I'm still getting one shot by a high phys hit or a crit with over 4K HP. Not sure how to take it to red maps when I'm being one shot in yellows.
I have survivability issues as well. I have almost the exact same gear set up as the video, took elusive + life nodes on my lv90 tree (went up to 4.8k life at some point), run quartz + jade flask, vitality + no more blood rage. I’m guessing that to solve my survivability issues it would be better to prioritize scaling damage over more defensive layers like use +3 bow and 20/20 gems (I only have +2 w/ CDot and still leveling my gems after quality recipe). Kill monsters first before they kill us type of logic?
Yeah! Really the game is about hitting just that right balance of life to not get one shot too much and then play defensively and focus on damage. Peoples' instinct is going to be to build more life and defense but, due to how spiky the damage in PoE is, you're better off going damage most of the time.

TR can delve and heist, but it’s clunky as fuck. First you have to shoot in the air and wait for arrows to come down, then the DoT to kill mobs, which sucks for mechanics like those where you want to kill directly.
That said, it’s one of the few builds I’ve played that are truly strong league starters as well as able to be tuned to end game viability
holy crap wow just noticed ur doing 30k tool tip dps which is even more than my league ender TR from last league LOL, sure its not mines so stacking speed is a bit lower but like clearly i have some work to be doing bwhahahaha. CHEERS! cause im at 9-10k and my char from last league in standard on trickster after the changes is like 25k with empower setup, imma try ot snake some tips from ya cause i think i go too hard in too many way. hard ramping on bosses nad concqs i nice but maybe i dont need ot stretch for as many "lay extra mines" nodes as i do~ maybe push conq eff and countering aoe. love the food for thought and itd say ur vbid hit the mark in that purpose
with mirage archer no less, im glad that self casting TR comes with a big single stack punch so it makes me feel better once i get my curse nad life on hit rings so i can drop skitters and maybe use like petrfied blood or something so i die less haha

@@subtractem Absolutely! And since I have seen (and been killed by) tons of Boss mechanics that I have never seen before (since the bosses were usually already dead^^) I would like some more time to figure out what is killing me and why^^
@@DirkVomEck I'd suggest running Hyrri's Ire for more dodge and evade.
Helped me. You'll lose a bit of life but that dodge covers for it.

a frenzy charge body armour is better than a carcass jack due to 3.14 toxic rain changes according to ziz iirc
Carcass Jack is for a mid tier build.
Later on, for uniques, I'd go for a Kintsugi or a Hyrri's Ire.
Rares are always better (a fact which I "kinda" don't like about this game), +1 max curse, life, frenzy, res, these things are all good and yes.. max evade.
You can continue running Carcass Jack if you have Anomalous Toxic Rain, Dying Sun, Phantasmal Mirage Archer with Conc effect support. (This is around 100 ex spent toxic rain build 😅).

Gives res, life, damage, what else you want. A decent corrupt will make it even stronger.
doesnt more aoe also mean the blooms are getting larger so you would still have the same amount of overlap, just over a larger area hitting more enemies at once?

I made this video months ago. Prices change dramatically between leagues. Its useful to remember that when watching old videos.
Toxic rain was changed a year ago so the arrows are further apart based on aoe. It lowers your dps.

i see many people use increased projectile damage, but what does that increase exactly?
- the initial damage of the arrows?
- is that initial damage also chaos or physical?
- does it also increase the chaos dot since that one was caused by a projectile ability?
ive seen the debate attack speed vs projectile speed. i was told projectile speed is more important but i dont understand why. sure, its neat if the arrows find their mark faster, but at the end of a day the amount of arrows in the air and on the ground matter, not how fast they got there. right?
how does increasing the chaos damage actually work? there is a flat initial (chaos?) damage on impact, and then the dot right? depending on the numbers what is most benefitial?
- first increasing the flat chaos damage or the flat chaos dot so all the % increases have a larger base to work with?
- will increasing the dot give the most benefit cause flat increases are too little?
there are so many unknowns i could find no answer anywhere to. your video was the first to go in the right direction.
@@subtractem thanks to your guidance i just crafted a bow thats worth 1ex now and made my damage jump from 17k to 52k :D (from quill, so i had a decent bow before)

It's an A tier build, probably the best league starter in the games history, so yeah still useful.
